How to come off Venlafaxine

I have been taking Venlafaxine for over 15 years (225mg daily), plus 50mg of Defanyl. I have tried to reduce the amount I take but I experience unpleasant side effects. I don't feel I suffer from Depression now but I have no way of knowing whether I would should I managed to come off the medication. I was told that I would have to take the medication for life which I am unhappy about. Has anyone abated to stop taking this medication?

Hi I have just posted a similar msg as I am on 100g sertraline for the last 7 years. I also have tried to reduce

My dose but felt awful and resumed usual dose my GP also said they will be for life.

I feel well so do not need them but they make me feel tired and my speech is starting to get mixed up or slurry sometimes , I'm only 49!!!. So don't give up.

Hello Betty 1964. Thank you for you reply. I was also told that I would be on them for life. It isn't a good thought as I feel sure I could manage without them. Even if I miss one capsule, I know within a couple of hours as the "brain zaps" start and I don't feel "with it". I found the forum on Venlafaxine where there seem to be many people who want to come off them, but can't. It seems crazy to me that in these days of austerity, the doctors are not encouraging and helping more people to wean off them. I am sorry you are in the same position as me and hope that you manage to reduce your doseage. I am 67 now but have suffered depression for most of my life.

Hi Diane, there's a good forum discussion on venlafaxine here which might help you.
