Like adults, at times children and young people experience overwhelming emotions such as low mood, anxiety, irritability, anger, etc., as well as challenging behaviours.
My 14 yr old is constantly miserable. Doesn’t like to engage much with people. Not even family. Plays on her game in her bedroom all weekend and doesn’t want to come out of her room at weekends or go anywhere. She has no “best friends” at school and only speaks to a friend that lives 250 miles away on her game. I’m worried she is on the spectrum as everyone seems to just frustrate her and she has no social skills.
I had anxiety at the age of 10/11 which started as separation anxiety due to trouble between my parents at home. I became afraid of something happening to my Mum. It built up to my not being able to say goodbye to her and go into school. Ive had anxiety on and off throughout my life and oh how I wish I had been able to have counselling or CBT back then in the early 70’s. Might’ve made a world of difference to my life going forward. To hear that even in this day and age children aren’t getting the help they need is terrible.
