Huge indentation in my thigh after hip replacement

It's been two years since I had hip surgery.  I have been in pain since then.  The pain still shoots down the outside of my leg past my knee.  When the swelling went down I found that I had a huge indention around the 8 inch scar!  I cannot wear a bathing suit.

Hi Kate

I would suggest that you go back to the doctor and ask to have it x-rayed. My old work colleague had pain and a noise on movement. It was found that she was badly infected and needed it redone. Have you mind put at ease as soon as possible x

This sounds like nerve pain, which is common after a major operation that cuts through major areas like ahip replacement. Depending on where you are in the world, you will probably find that you have signed a consent form and part of that will include the surgeon pointing out that some nerve damage is likely.

My third hip operation (same hip) has resulted in a large 'dead' patch on my leg from nerve damage in between the scars . I had no problems at all after the first two operations 2-3 years ago.

My third scar is already showing signs that it will not look as good as the first two.  To me, it really does not matter, I would rather have a visible scar on my leg than the awful pain of osteoarthritis.

Thank you so much!

Yes I also have nerve damage.  And you are right about getting rid of the pain I had before I had the replacement!  Thanks.....

Yes Kaye, I am the same have an awful unsightly indentation around my scar - not a pleasant sight.

I had a huge blister over eight inches long on my leg and when burst one and a half inches deep. It happened just after my hip op and they think it was due to thin skin from the steroids I am taking and pressure on the leg during surgery. It looks like I have been attacked by a shark! I was embarrassed by wearing a bathing costume at first, but I love swimming, so I decided it was other people’s problem if they did not like my scar, not mine.

Have also got a huge dent on my hip 1 year after THR I did not think it would be this bad. I had my Pancreas removed a few years ago and that has only left a very feint scar. Now I have developed pain in the Piriformis muscle which has set off even more pain in the Sciatic nerve. Strong pain meds do not work so I am due to have injections in the muscle.

Thank you for answering. I guess there’s not much we can do. .....

Might as well enjoy life there’s nothing we can do. Thank you for answering!

That’s terrible. I had epidurals in my lower spine to keep my nerves from spreading down the sides of my legs.

I must admit I was a bit embarrassed to start with but my friends just say don't worry, there are people with much worse problems than a big hole in their leg!!

The things we have to go through eh?

Yes just to keep going!
