i am 38 yrs old. had a hysterectomy in 1999 leaving my ovaries in tact. about 18months after that i noticed i was wakin in the night with flushes, vaginal dryness, no desire for lovemaking, and felt very tired, along with itchy skin. blood results showed that my oestrogen level had dropped dramitically and was prescribed elleste solo by tablet. i needed to be increased to 2mg daily after a few weeks and have been taking it ever since, as my gp said it would be forever. however, i have now moved and changed gp and he wouldnt prescribe me anymore, sayin i have been on it for too long, and am too young to be menopausal. i am now very concerned about any effects it will have on me as i am 20months into a very active relationship. my gp did agree to let me start taking it again if i develop any symptoms, i am currently on day 3 of no tablets, my question is: is it harmful to have too much oestrogen in the body?

I had a hysterectomy four years ago and have been on Premarin ever since. My mother was on it for over thirty years with no ill effect, both pre and post hystectomy. A sufficient amount of estrogen is essential for a succesful relationship, both on a sexual, physical level and an emotional level. The difference when I have occasionally not taken my HRT is phenomenol. As I understand it, the greatest risk for HRT is an increase in uterine cancer. Given that neither you or I have a uterus any more, this is no longer an issue. If your doctor continues his/her stance, then go and see another doctor in the practice or even see another one. If the worst comes to the worst it is possible to buy HRT on line. Although it would obvioulsy be better to continue to use it u nder the surveillance of a doctor, the difference in well-being is such that I, for one, have been reduced to doing this as I no longer live in England and it is not available where I am.

Good luck and trust your instinct.

Might I suggest changing from Premarin to a synthetic HRT such as kliovance. The horse farms in Canada etc that produce the drug to make premarin - treat the pregnant mares terribly and the foals ... doesn't bear thinking about. The synthetic hormone is just as good. I have been using for years. Please spread the word about premarin. Any HRT that begins with PRE (PREgnant MAres urINe) should be avoided. A lot of doctors are unaware of how premarin is produced also. I am sure they would willingly offer the alternative if they knew. Testing drugs to save lives on animals is one thing maybe, but to confine pregnant mares into stalls so small they cannot turn round or move more than a step forward or backward, and this is done for around 7 months each year for up to 12 years. It is barbaric.

So please people, consider using the equally as good synthetic HRT (made from plant extract). Ask your doctor about it. Spread the word.

**** will tell you more

I know this is an old thread, but the more people are educated about the cruelty imposed on mares and foals the more hopefully they will change to a more ethically acceptable HRT tablet.

I had a full abdo hysterectomy at the age of 38 - I started with similar symptoms abt 12 months after - I visited my go who prescribed Premarin - I have only just taken them so time will tell.  My gap also advised it is common to have an "induced menopause " when you suddenly have a hysterectomy
