I have been having pain my left hip I THR on my right in February

How should I wait before I have thr on th other hip. The doctor wants my to take and injection first before we talk about surgery. Is this correct to do.

I had LTHR in March and a RTHR in July on this year I'm doing very well. I think it's better to do it and be pain free. Best of luckluck

Hello Craig,

I had my RTHR at the end of March and due to have the left done in 4 weeks. My right hip surgery went very well so I'm hoping the left one will too. Can't wait to be pain free and move on with my life. I was given injections in my right hip before I was referred for surgery and when I met with the consultant he basically told me that the injections are a waste of time and money.

Good luck and I hope you get sorted soon.

I had a RTHR, and at 12 weeks I had a episode of extreme pain in my left hipwhen I was out walking.

I was told 6 weeks if it was a muscle and twelve weeks if it was cartledge in my hip joint.

As I understand the injection only works if you have some cartledgee left to inject into.

I nearly went mad with the pain, totally different between hips, right hip the pain was all in the back of my leg and buttock, left hip it was in my groin, and later in buttock and hip.

Pain delayed me exercising my new RTHR, took myself to the local heated swimming pool, where I could tread water, only exercise I was getting in the end..

Finally convinced the local GP to give me a referral to the surgeon who had done my first surgery, ended up being almost 6 months to the day since first surgery, he x-rayed me and said as he was loading up the results on the computer do you rememeber I thought your 2nd hip also with OA, would last 2 years or maybe more, ahh wait a minute I can see the difference between x-rays, of one's done during surgery, you are bone on bone, 6 months is a very short time, and booked me for surgery on my second hip then and there, 7 monoths later I reached the top of the surgery listsing and left hip replaced as well.

If you have OA, I think in most cases it affects both hips, weather too the same extent is individual, mine has also attacked my knees, am at moderate level of arthritis, Dr GP has said he won;t even give me a referaal until I became severe or bone on bone, nothing to look foward to in my case.

hi craig

warm welcome to the hippies forum ...

Where do you live?

Sometimes the surgeon needs to get the hip replacement surgery approved by insurance company -

When I lived in Los Angeles , Ortho Surgeon diagnosed  OA however told me that "We are not at the end of the rope yet "  the route I had to go was : Physical Therapy and then injection ...

Is this surgeon the same as the one who did your 1st THR?

let us know how you are getting on, okay

big warm hug

Thanks everyone for information. The OS wants me to take injection first because he said I still have some space but I'm having pain in  groin area and buttocks. He wants to wait a month or two before we talk about surgery

Yes this is the same surgeon who did my first surgery. He wants my to take injection because I still have space.

After you injection, you'll have to wait at least 3 months before they will consider surgery on that hip.  I'm getting bilateral surgery early Oct.  Not sure if that's the right decision for everyone but you may want to ask if your Dr even does bilateral and if so would he consider you a candidate.

At Kaiser my OS is the only one who does BTHR and he only does 4 or 5 a year, so they are not too common.  Good luck with your decision.

I think it is getting an authorization for the 2nd THR, Craig -- Unfortunately ...

I was insured with Kaiser at that time and that was the procedure -

Wishing you lots of strength and please come back here any time, okay ...

I'm also insured with Kaiser.  Fortunately my OS is the only one the have on staff that will do a bilateral and hew only does around 4 per year.  I was surprised that bilateral was not a more common approach within Kaiser.

I had my 1st thr in december and had my 2nd 8 weeks later. It would have been 6 but my suregon was on holiday. I was up and about a week or so after my 1st and was desperate to get my 2nd done about 4 weeks after 1st but everyone is diffrent. My knee op l was not so great with my knee replacement. Its a lot more painful and it took a lot more healing. And you will always know you have a knee replacement as you feel it constantky and can never lean on it. Just about to get other side done
