I have tried only half-heartedly to quit drinking for many years; not wanting to believe that I had a problem, even though my family and friends told me that I did. It was not until recently when I started having difficulty swallowing and a chronic sore throat did I become concerned enough to get serious about my health. Apparently, cancer of the throat can be caused by alcohol, (among other things) and manifests itself by difficulty swallowing and chronic sore throat! I am currently having blood work done to see what damage I may have done to myself by years of drinking--but in the meantime, my doctor has put me on Antabuse. For the first time, I am taking the prescription even though it has been prescribed before--I always threw the medication out, or didn't have it even filled. It has been just over a month, and I have not had a drink--nor any real strong cravings.
If anyone can respond--I would like to know how long you can take Antabuse? My doctor is not totally familiar with long term use--he says only about three months. I would appreciate any feedback from anyone who has been taking Antabuse for a longer period of time. Thank you, and bless all of you who are trying to conquer this problem in their lives!

I would suggets goign to a twelve tep program such as AA. This is the only real cure for alcoholism, and antibuse is only a crutch. There is no magic pill out there to quit frinking. I have been sober for a year, and I tried everything under the sun. AA will not only stop you from drinking, but it will enhance your spirit. Exersise is also a goood outlet. Trust me If I can stop, anyone can stop!

i've tried AA a thousand times or more, but always relapse. i had the spiritual experience, and still believe, but the damn devil always creeps back in somehow. disulfiram will prevent you from any whimsical \"slips\". why not have a backup plan? you never know when tragedy will strike or a celebration will come or whatever other excuse to drink comes to mind. with disulfiram, your unable to drink for up to two weeks after your last dose. it's peace of mind.
