Hi guys, believe I've been suffering with IBS a few years now. Been doctors couple of times and had a couple of blood tests for celiac disease etc. Got a lot worse last few months so went back and doctor put me on mebeverine to be taken 3 times daily 20 mins before a meal. They don't seem to be helping. Anyone have any treatments or ideas I could try please. I get a rumbling feeling then diarrhoea half way through a meal. It's awful. Any help would be great thanks
Have you tried keeping a food diary? May help find the triggers. I also find that peppermint helps with the rumbling and bloated feeling.
I do keep an eye on what triggers it but I could have a certain meal one day and it's fine and the same meal a week later could trigger it. I will try peppermint though. Thanks
You might like to try going on the low FODMAP diet. It cuts out a lot of foods which ferment in the stomach. Also, were you eating gluten before you had your Coeliac test? You need to be eating gluten for 6 weeks every day before a blood test; also, it is possible to get a 'false negative' result even then. The only way to get an accurate diagnosis for coeliac disease is to have biopsies taken by having an endoscopy - you need to eat gluten for this one too.
Mebeverine is not a good drug. I had the worst indigestion I have ever experienced with Mebeverine. I tried Buscopan instead and it worked without side effects. Try a food diary to see if food is causing diarrhoea.
Hi Chris, Sorry that you have to go through this, First of all did they rule out everything to diagnose you as IBS? and if that is IBS then to control acute attacks you can use antispasmodic like buscopan or mebeverine, Mebeverine worked for me fine, and because of diarrhea you may loose lots of water and electrolytes, so keep hydrating yourself with some high micro nutrients drink, so at least you don't feel weak due to diarrhea..If you can tolerate dairy then eat yogurt everyday, so good bacteria in that will help you in your digestion.
Well in my case I also had gluten sensitivity test and It came back negative...but I still can't tolerate the gluten so I avoid that and experiment with my food, there is this term called non celiac gluten sensitivity so you might wanna check that through avoidance of wheat and see if your symptoms are improving or not..also when people get older they develop lactase enzyme deficiency, so they cannot tolerate dairy after certain age, So you can always keep a food diary and check for your symptoms after eating particular things.
For long term management of IBS, you need total lifestyle change which includes regular exercise, avoiding food triggers with healthy food habbits, take care of your gut's good bacteria and i would suggest you can go to naturopath/alternative medicine doctors to help you find the long term solution, It helped me.. It might help you
Thanks for the advice. I do need to concentrate more on my food and be abit more strict what I eat. I do eat cheese , milk , yogurt regularly so i think i might start by cuttting these out and see what happens. I beleive they do a dairy free alternative, I hope so because I love to eat these foods . ☺ thanks again.
Hey chris, all the best , Just find out what is causing the problem then you can manage it well, Just one by one exclude the items and observe.
Thank you.
