Increasing discomfort in knees, what could be the causes and how to remedy it?

Hi, first post here.

Basically i've been experiencing knee pains i haven't gotten before, and they're in the patella or meniscus, the lateral and medial collateral ligaments, or at least that's what i conclude from reading a little.

I'm 5"7, 127 lbs, have been training for a few years, until getting clicking sounds in my left knee while doing pistol squats late last year restricted this to purely upper body work, although i still trek about every other weekend.

I feel as if something in my left knee shifts when bending my knee sometimes, and while doing static squat and calf raise holds just now i got a more pronounced pain in the lateral and collateral ligament sides.

I've never gotten injured before, i don't play basketball or anything involving repeated jumping. I have been wearing orthotics since mid last year although i still find them uncomfortable and findthat they cause my knees to wobble out of neutral when climbing the stairs, so i've done away with them for the moment. I'm wondering if the orthotics could've caused all this.

I'd be very grateful for any advice. Don't want this to jeopardize my lifestyle. I'm too young for that!

Orthopedic surgeon can tell you more than we can. MRI to look for torn tissue. Sometimes it won't show in the imaging. Pick a orthopedic who deals in sports medicine. They see it alot and know what to look for.

First... You NEVER try to diagnose yourself.  Stop Googling this stuff...

Second...  Go to a SPORTS orthopedic group, one that works with your local pro and college teams.  They are the REAL experts especially for people who have been very physically active.  I played hockey for 45 years until four knee scopes and a hip replacement did me in.

Third...  People go to orthotics when the real problem could be a hip or spine alignment issue that a chiropractor can fix very quickly. X-ray and chiro appointment...do them.

More...  When you go to the ortho, he'll/she'll do a quick x-ray which may or may not show anything.  An MRI will probably be ordered to get a better picture. However, MRIs frequently come back "inconclusive"  All four of mine did.  That's when the doc SHOULD scope the knee to see what's going on and fix it.  I had two menisci and two femoral condyles ripped.

You need to find the root cause of the pain and have it repaired.  Oracle out...mike drop...

Thanks for the advice. Had gone to a family podiatry clinic before, but i'm pretty sure the problems started some time after the orthotics. Had an x-ray( probably not MRI?) done from my hips down and a video of my walking gait. I suppose all that is standard procedure?

Thanks for the detailed advice. I suppose a family podiatry clinic isn't the same as a sports orthopedic?

I remember the doctor saying everything was normal, save for my left leg being 6mm shorter, which he put down to something- functional.

When you say scope, do you mean they insert probes into the knee?

Were your issues gradual or had you already experienced pains from the start? I wonder if mine could be attributed to something longer ago than i currently suspect.

MRI you would remember. It's the machine they slide you into and it knocks and bangs. Makes all kinds of noise. X-ray doesn't show much when it comes to torn tissue.
