Is Pilates safe after THR

THR march 2014: very slow. Recovery. Groin. Strain 3/4 months post surgery: been told pain is related to muscle weekness. Doing pilates to help strengthening. Lost hope in constant. Pain was wondering. If Pilates. Is aggravating. Leg as feels very spasm?lifting my heavy toddler doesn't. Help. Any viee on this??

Hello Lara, I had right THR in July 14 and must be very fortunate as I have had no pain after a couple of weeks from op. The only thing I get is a bit of soreness along the scar line if I walk too far - currently able to to 3+ miles daily, I'm 65yr. I had very good after-care and paid for hydrotherapy which really help re-build muscle and  by rubbing bio-oil into the scar twice daily. Not sure if pilates would be of use. Have you done the exercises daily that the physio should have explained to do immediatly after op and for at least a couple of months. Wish you well.

Regards Arthur

I sympathise I am 14 weeks post op thought I was doing well but this last week I am having awful sharp stabbing pains towards top of scar and in groin area really hurts. I am starting physio on Wednesday referred by doctor so will have to see.

Hi

Do you see a physio......he would be the best person to check with.

I know a lot of people to Pilates after THR or gentle yoga but we are all different

I would seek medical advice about it.

Hi Lara,

So sorry to hear that you are still in pain.  I had my THR last August, thought I was doing well, but walking for any great distance gave me the groin pain.  My physiotherapist told me last week that the muscles in my operated hip leg are still very weak.  This is despite doing all my exercises, she has now given me harder exercises and wants me to gradually build up walking on my treadmill.  You must be very young to have a toddler, I can imagine how dificult it must be for you.  Does it hurt whilst doing the pilates?  I wonder if water walking might help you.  Please know that we are all thinking of you.

Lorraine. Vancouver. Canada.

Had my hip replacement in 2009 and still heavey and lots of muscle weakness

been back to surgeon over the years and they cannot do anything

walk with a stck now, my age is 67 and trying to live with it . My other leg is half a inch

samller. I have back pain too, cannot walk far as it becomes heaver and heaver due to the muscle being not attached. Hope you soon inprove

Hi Beryl

I had my hip replaced 13 months ago {2nd hip} then a fracture four weeks post op.....the fracture wont heal because the bone snapped and a bit of it moved away so the two bits will never knit together again.....they can do nothing about that either. I've got scoliosis so spinal problems as well.....I walk with 2 crutches, cant walk very far with 1 and couldnt walk without them

I'm 68......My leg isnt shorter as such but because of this fracture I have what the surgeon calls a dip.......if you look at me walking with no help Its like I have a very highheel on one foot and the other one is bare....does that make sense

We seem to be alike in a lot of ways.

I found a lady that does yoga {for older ladies}  NOT OLD cheesygrin

She is very good and adapts some of the moves for me

Good luck everyone

Hi Lara,

I had Rt THR 8th Aug 2014.  Everything going really well till 12 weeks when I lifted 23 Kg case..not thinking... but also I had no choice.. long story.. But something happened then  as afterwards really bad limp and groin pain and buttock -psoas and piriformis muscles and tendon strain/inflammation.  Anti inflamms did not work so now going to have cortisone injectins to reduce inflammation so I can work muscles again without strain.  I am active (61) even now .. have to be horse and dog to walk and care for.  But  hope that injections will finally sort so I can go back to "normal" reovery road again.  I have been having weekly hands on physio since 6 weeks post op... without it I do not know how much worse I would have been... but obv this costs... not everyone can afford  and sorry NHS physios are not "hands on" they do not have the time.. which is NOT their fault.. just the system and lack of resources...

Hi Gillee

When are you going for your cortisone.....good luck....I know its different for different people.

I think you know my story.....long story........suffice to say I'm on crutches permanently after a fracture  weeks post op THR

The consultant said you are coping well with life on crutches now we have to try and hit that pain ......Cortisone injection.

That was about 3 months ago. Its only starting to wear off a little bit now.  Still not nearly as sore as I was beforehand. Got and appointment 23rd of this month....that will make it four months and he will give me another cortisone injection.  I dont know about you but I consider that a resultcheesygrin

Hope yours goes well......let us know

Hi Eileen,

I am down as URGENT.. normally 4 - 6 weeks, but as there had been an abslute "Balls up" by NHS appointment online, consutant said he would do it as urgent... I am away this weekend... work.. but hope it will be soon after that!  I am hoping that it will ease the ache/inflammation in the groin and allow better recovery and then back to full time riding!  Funny as today I sat astride a "saddle horse".  nice and narrow BUT the ache was in non op leg!! I think cos of all physio work on op side the non op side has stiffened up.. What a joke... so will ask physio on Wed to massage non op side also!!  BUT at least I am better off than you are....and there is light at end of tunnel...

Hi

Talk about a mess up in the NHS appointments departmenteek

I have a letter from the consultant saying to come back the 23rd of this month.....OK that will be about  months since the first one.

Today I got an automated call from NHS.....are you xxxx press 1, you have an appointment etc etc press 1, you are confirming you will attend the appintment? press 1......This is normal for our hospital so I just pressed without thinking.....when I came off the phone I thought..,....she said the 9th of the mont {next week} I better check.

I rang up appointments, yes 9th Feb at pm.......then she said Ohhh!! I've just found another one for you on the 23rd of Feb at pm????

Theb she said just keep the 9th appointment and ask him when you are there does he want to see you on the 23rd as well???? Do they ever talk to each other in the NHScheesygrin

Eileen

Hi gill ; your injury sounds like mine really debilitating . All I am doing is rehabilitation with sports injury physio.never offered pain relief! But I take amitriptyline10 at night which help with the sleep. Like u very expensive 60euro a go( in Dublin). Also doing the Pilates for extra streng but still have a lot of pain on walking. Nothing really working for me lifting the little one and house work a killer. Was told I was active but all the wrong way......

Thank you very sore day after Pilates so not sure if it's too much. Go to the pool some time difficult to do much with kids . Only 37 for hip every one said recovery would be great as I'm young but seems like it's much longer than expectedy

Thanks just have to keep working on the muscles I suppose😬😬😬😬😬😬😬

Hi Lara,

Yes but only certain ones. Remember restrictions on movements. I did them both times for both hips, once cleared the therapists showed me the safe ones. No lifting pushing weights. Therapy also has many ways to help build muscle and tone the ligament . Stretching is good too! Bicycling slowly is great if u can sit on the seats.

I like the stationary bikes with tractor seats and a well placed pillow.

Start slow and work UR way up to repititions.  And always do the butt squeezes one of the most important exercise of all. It really helps build up core muscles stomach and back muscles. Keeps the implant stable while healing.

I also liked water therapy a RX for water therapy is resistance training. Also a good way for muscle building without the pain. In hip recovery exercising the saying in if u start to feel pain when exercising STOP immediately. We are not in the no pain no game group for this one. The purpose & goal is to slowly build strength as the bone grows into the prothesis to stabilize the implant. After 8-9 months you'll be good to go in most cases.

Happy Trails.

A third time winner in THR.

Good job. It god to hear that you did so well!

Continued success sent sent ur way!biggrin

Once u start therapy u will learn so much about movements and how exercises done core scaly can be the best heeling method .

i hope you are better soon. There are a lot of ups and downs. Soon you will be dancing at the next party.

Wishing u the best. Third time THR SURVIVOR. Each one was very different. The best thing was the exercises which for me was the road to recovery. Remember UR bone has to grow into the implant to stabilize the components. It takes time. 8 months to a year. It's different for everyone.

There are many variables in heeling thru the whole process.

Best Wishes.confused

Hi Eilleen,

good od to see you. It's been awhile. How are you doing.

After therapy I was given a list of Pilates safe to do as well as the standard exercises. No weight bearing anything.

Hope you are well.

Take it slow and you will be on to the road to recovery faster than u think .

Every day is a challenge. Stay with it and don't over do!
