My issue dates back 7 years where I had an intensely itchy scalp like a crawling sensation for a month. It has since come back for 2 weeks at a time then disappears. Until last year when it came back April 2017 it has gone for 2 months then has been there pretty much for a year. It is an unbearable need to scratch it and is like a crawling sensation all over my head. I have been back and forth to a gp who has prescribed strong antihistamines, steroid cream and after blood tests my b12 was very low however after injections monthly the itch didn’t go away.
After losing faith in my gp I saw 2 trichologists who said they can’t see any physical symptoms so ruled out any dermatological causes. So my gp suggested it could be a nerve problem, nerves misfiring and causing the itch. After googling nerve damage can be a result of b12 deficiency. My doctor prescribed me Amitriptyline a 10mg dose however the itch persisted.
The itch is constant and making my life hell - I’ve forgotten what life was like without this problem and don’t want to live with it anymore.
Does it sound like it could be neuropathic itch? Something caused by my b12 and strangely just isolated to my scalp?
I’ve had b12 issues for years . They check for lice, maybe allergic to soap ? Try allergenic soap some thing that has no perfumes or any thing in it. Also psoriasis, can be very itchy and pain full . I had be12 shots for years and never had itching issues like you not saying it couldn’t happen . Now it might be a nerology disorder I can feel how it could be so out hand you can have axiety . So maybe ask your doctor about all this what I mentioned ask him do mri , cat scan on ur brain . Plz keep in touch gonna look on google see if any thing I can come up with for you hun ok . Ttyl if I get any other information I can help u with . Oh actually are you on any pain meds?
Dear Fiona,
I have a problem with an itchy scalp and never thought about it being nerves. I suffer from Peripheral Neuropathy and also have tinnitis where I hear locusts all the time.
However I live in Florida, a very hot climate. If I work outside and perspire a lot, my head itchy really bad.
I found if I wash my hair and rinse it with cold water, the itch goes away until the next time.
I hope this helps
As it follows a pattern can it have a hormonal cause.
Now that I looked up cold helps with that nerology problem I no Me I have eczema cold on my hand stuff help .
Hi Caroline
Being in the shower using cold water does provide very temporary relief but starts itching as soon as I’m out
Really that I know it’s only for bit that must be giving you axiety ? Also I can understand eczema erritating me also every time I use different soaps stuff . But think she’s right her disease I’d tell ur doctor couldn’t hurt I’d do this get a fAn keep it towards we’re your itchy till you go back to nerology you could have what she has . I’m waiting back nerology to seems like forever stressful I can understand . Also use Benalyne scoop see if that could help till then . I’m sorry ur going through that not right or fun . All of us still suffering or has been suffering all of these people are understanding , caring they all try help so hopefully you and all of us get better . Let me know hun ok plz ?
Hi, Did you ever get a diagnosis of your itch? Just wondering because I have small fiber neuropathy and itching on scalp.
Hi, I also have peripheral neuropathy and an itchy scalp and all over. Just wondering if you have the itching not just on the scalp and have you told your neurologist?
