What two antibiotics have you all taking for Acute diverticulitis with bleeding I had a Ct scan today with dye and showed I had Acute diverticulitis with bleeding after been up all night in non stop pain and bloody mucos discharge also there was blood in the actual bowel too plus the bloody mucos discharge . I'm scared I hope someone answers soon Thanks
Flagal and Cipro. Did they tell you to go on brothy, jello, banana type diet for a few days? Also add probiotic at least 30 milllion and when your stomach settles down add every day fiber to your diet and also watch your trigger foods. Everyone seems to have different ones. Mine is anything with orange grease such as pizza, spagetti, chili ect.. also things like pickled okra. I slip up sometimes and then pay for it dearly. It it some horrid pain. Good luck to you.
No they didn't I was at ER all day getting all those test I was given Flagy and Levaquin has anyone ever taken Levaquin? Does anyone else get the bloody discharge? There was also blood in stool when they checked with that stick things . I had to drink a huge cup of mix for the dye . Can I drink the probiotic while on antibiotics? Can you still take your vitamin while on the antibiotics? I just took my vitamin 4 hours after taking my first set of antibiotics today. I really appreciate the help on diet.
My sister takes the Levaquin. I would go ahead and start on the probiotics.. get the really good ones. I dont know why the vitiamins would be a problem but that I dont really know about for sure. I have not had the blood but some do. I have the mucus and stomach that feels discended and hard. I am currently on a flare and have had since Friday. On antibiotics now and finally tonight it is finally settling down. I overate a lot on Tuesday and then by Wed night I was in pain and off to the doc Friday morning. My sisters triggers are jelly beans and things like that and dark chocolate.. Maybe keep a food journal and see what you see in about 24 hours gives you problems. It is not a fun disease to have and wish there was more research and treatment for this nasty disease.
Also if you have more than a couple a year docs are ready to do major surgery.
Sam what are the good probiotics ? Does anyone here have the blood mucos discharge or blood in stool ?
I can't mention names on this site because it will get flagged. Check online and research and compare different ones. Just make sure it is at least 30 billion micros. I think I put million down before. Those are usually more expensive. Don't get the off brand cheap stuff. Are you in U. S or U.K? Someone on this board for sure has the blood in stool. Have you had problems with stomach before? If I am really careful with diet I do not deal with it but sometimes I get careless... like forgetting fiber for several days and probiotics and eat crap and I will get a flare. I have a friend who has Crohns and she has blood in her stool. Also keep softener on hand if you find yourself getting constipated. Hope this helps.
I'm in the US (Kentucky) had gallbladder removed years ago. Sam when's last time you was on the antibiotics? To keep my strength up and to have something on my stomach with the Flagy can I have some creamy peanut butter ?
Hi
Sorry to hear you have this nasty disease like the rest of us. I've read these comments and they seem to cover things pretty comprehensively. I am one of the people who also had bleeding with my first flare, and it scared me rigid. It means simply that your insides are inflamed and infected. Once your antibiotics kick in your insides will start to heal up and the bleeding stop. As for the pain, I was also prescribed an anti spasmodic to help stop the swamping pains, and a pain killer. I also used a hot water bottle on my tummy. Some people are lucky and the pain eases up after a week or so - I really hope this is you. For others of us, I'm afraid it can take a lot longer for the pain to go - in my case it was over 4 months, and I used advice from this site to help myself.
I am in the UK so things are treated very differently here. For a start we have different named drugs, so you would have to see what is reommended for you. My fluid only diet consist of chicken/beef broth, clear apple juice and herbal tea. As the symptoms die down, I introduce things like yogurt and meal replacement drinks but absolutely NO fibre at first. When I start to reintroduce fibre slowly I do it in the form of blended soup, vegetable puree, mash, steamed fish.
I suggest you keep a food diary to see what foods are your triggers. Mine are gluten and full fat, but for others it is nuts, seeds, pips, popcorn, dairy, red meat - we are all different. I would be wary of peanut butter - even the smooth variety - but if you do try it and it hurts, then at least you'll know.
You will find others on this site recommend you start taking the natural fibre supplement psyllium husk, made from plant seed (Metamucil), twice daily in a large tumbler of water. It is a stool thickener, softener and mild laxative. Opinions vary, but it certainly helps regulate and clear out my bowels. If you think about it, the way to heal is to keep things clean, and this does the job internally for you. No nasty bits lingering inside you means less chance of infection and inflammation developing! I also take pure aloe vera juice, a teaspoon morning and night. This is a natural aid to digestion and healing. All I can say is that withing a few days of starting it, my pain started to ease, and I have now been pain free for almost a month.
For me now, I eat healthy, small, low fat, gluten free meals with lots of veggies and fruit, so high in good soluble fibre. I drink a lot more water, and am finally able to resume my exercise routine. I have to be careful when I eat out and I do have slip ups - it is a lifestyle change. All the best.
My first attack occurred three years ago with lots of blood. At the time I was not prescribed anything because my GP did not know what it was. Six weeks later a colonoscopy discovered a couple of benign polyps and diverticulosis. Since then I have had many attacks but only one other with a little blood. I am now prescribed Flagl and Cipro which give me horrible side effects but do the job of clearing it up for a while. Next time I am going to ask if there are any other drugs to treat it, l am allergic to penicillin.
Hi Lyn
Yes the side effects of the drugs are pretty grim, both in the USA or UK. I take Cefalexin and Metronidazole, but I don't know if they are the same as yours, just different names for them in the UK. I also have Mebeverine for the spasms. Are you on any preventative measures to minimise the risk of future attacks, once you have finished the antibiotics? By that I mean diet, stool thickeners/softeners, laxatives, natural supplements. I find the ones I take have helped me a lot. In fact the stool thickener/softener/laxative is actually prescribed monthly for me by my doctor. Best wishes
Dont get too worked up. I took either a combo of cipro and flagyll or Augmentin by itself. I had blood with my last episode and had multiple attacks at the end of last year that ended me up in the hospital on IV antibiotics. Clear liquids for 2-3 days then full liquids for 4-5 days then soft foods for another week or 2. You have to give your bowels a rest. I ended up having a foot of my colon removed this past December. My GI doc and multiple surgeons said I ran the risk of perforating if I didnt get the surgery. I had it robotic-laparocopic. In hospital for 4 days, then home. Its been almost 6 weeks now. Im feeling pretty good.
Hi Feliinia, I am in the UK, I will have to look up Cefalexin and Mebeverine but as you know I am on Metronidazole and Cipro. I think that it is the Metronidazole that makes me feel ill, very dizzy and nauseous. I am trying to be careful with my diet this time, even excluding peas from my diet, sob! I have just started to take fiber twice a day to see if it helps, however it would be very expensive to take it long term. I also think that lifting and bending does not help if you have diverticulosis so I am trying to avoid that to but it is difficult to put into practice in everyday life. what is it that your doctor prescribes as a stool thickener etc?
No I was told nothing about stool softeners I do see a gastro doctor this Thursday I'll. See what they share . I wonder if I can just take the Flagy by itself the two together keeps me in bathroom with cramps and runs so tire up for two days and night little yo no sleep so tired and can't rest what can I do they say I can't have any medication or mouth wash with alcohol in it . Can you take admondium AD for dirreah while on antibiotics what helps you rest with the cramps and bathroom runs ?
Please let us know the outcome of your gastro appt.
Hi Lyn
I am also UK so I looked to see if Cefalexin was the same as Cipro but couldn't find out. I too found one or other of them made me feel generally unwell but put up with it for the 5 day course. Once I'd finished the course the side effects wore off for me. As you are in the UK you can get Fybogel (soluble fibre supplement, stool bulker/thickener and mild laxative) on the net. The basic ingredient is psyllium husk, derived from the seeds of a plant. I got 120 sachets for £17.76 - a 2 month supply. However my GP prescribed it for me and now I am 66 I get it free. I found certain movements like bending, lifting and driving were painful, so learned to move cautiously. Hope this helps and gets past the moderator.
I'm afraid I don't know the answer to these questions - something to ask your doctor. If you are USA based the products are called different names than here in the UK. Unfortunately all medications can have side effects and sometimes they clash with each other. Hope you get some answers.
I am too Lyn allergic to penicillin! I'm on Flagy and Levaquin but think I'm stopping the Levaquin because of the lawsuit about it causing hemorrhage of the Heart and aurissiums . The last two days I had this horrible deep pain cramp ache below the belly button right in the middle of the lower stomach middle under navel and also toward left for two days now thus the Ct scan showing acute diverticulitis with colon bleeding . Do you guys get that pain during acute attack throughout the day and night?
I have been trying to figure out when I first started getting diverticulitis. For many many years possibly 30 I had occasional stomach problems. I was told by docs who just listened to my symtoms that wrote it off to IBS. I do believe now that I possibly at the onset may have been developing the pockets in colon. I was too young for diverticulits so it was IBS. Possibly leaving it undiagnosed for years it continued to get worse.I think more research needs to be done. My son who is in his 20's recently mentioned his stomach hurt sometimes when he eats which is how mine started. I knew my stomach would feel good when empty. They need to start at that point and investigate.
The Ct scan w/ dye they kept taking me in and out the machine now that does show my lower stomach right I'm not sure what all shows on a Ct scan of abdomen he knew non stop pain was in lower stomach . I just don't know what all a Ct scan shows . I have plain yogurt if I eat it while on the antibiotics will it stop the effect of the antibiotic and not let it work not sure when or how we are to eat yogurt I mean like after you complete the entire antibiotic and then eat yogurt or can you while actually on the antibiotic sorry so many questions .
