Hi Everyone,
I posted a few times on this site about a month ago. I was asking members about the various prostate procedures. My prostate was 263 grams with a large median lobe. I was unable to pee at all prior to surgery. I opted for the SUPRA PUBLIC OPEN SIMPLE PROSTATECTOMY. Surgery was May 2 (8 days ago). It was not pleasant or fun but it is done. I pee like a teenager now. No incontinence. Getting erections etc. Today I get my staples removed. I will go over the biopsy report with him, but he said that when he was looking at the inside of my prostate he said there was no hint of cancer.
If anyone is interested in my surgery or how I am doing please feel free to ask.
I should have re-read my post. It is PUBIC not PUBLIC.
Why was it allowed to grow to such a size ?
Since I didn't know what this was, I looked it up on the internet. My main question - Does this mean you can't wear a speedo? (or will the incision be a conversation starter)
Seriously, thank you for sharing. While I did not have this surgery, I did have to recover from one. So my only advice is to take the physical activity slowly. You don't have to baby yourself -- just don't overdo it for a couple of weeks.
To help educate us - was this robotic surgery? Are you taking antibiotics and/or laxatives? How did you decide on this vs something like TURP?
I am a little confused on what you had done. Was it a prostate removal or suprapubic catheter installation ? Hank
Just look up SIMPLE PROSTATECTOMY.
I would like to know about it and where is done at?
Sounds like this went well so far. Good. Nobody has ever posted here about this as a cure for BPH. Go easy for a few weeks. If you don't mind posting something so personal, I imagine men will be interested when in a couple of months you have had sex, if the sensation was good. At 284g, it sounds like you needed a radical and very unusual cure. Being able to pee well must be such a relief
HI Gary,
I had this same procedure done back in June of 2015..So far so good. Mine was 200 cc or 175 gms.I was at the stage where even with a large cath I was almost unable to go. This procedure will take about 6 weeks to relatively cure..but studies indicate that SOSP is a most reliable solution. Also if you are on debilitating MEDS you should be able to go off ALL of them.I do not take any for the prostate today. No doubt, when done properly it is star performer ...The last thing you need is to have another procedure done in the future................Were not getting any younger and these kind of operations can take a lot out of you. Today I can hardly tell on my physical body where the procedure was..however its Not an easy procedure and HoLep would be less invasive however with a gland of our size however you would be on the table for a lot longer time. God bless and Best of Luck
I found this description on-line:
Open Suprapubic Simple Prostatectomy
Your surgeon will make an incision from below your belly button to just above your penis. They will then cut into your bladder to remove prostate tissue through the bladder.
Alternatively, there is this procedure:
Open Retropubic Simple Prostatectomy
In this procedure, your surgeon will make an incision from below your belly button to just above your penis. Through this incision, they’ll move your bladder aside, cut into your prostate, and remove the core of the gland. The shell of your prostate is then stitched up and the outer incision closed.
Both of these has the advantage of not putting instruments through the urethra, with the possibility of damage causing strictures. (I had my external sphincter damaged by a doctor, causing me to be highly incontinent.)
I hadn't seen a urologist in about 4 years. I guess I was in denial until the flow stopped.
I will have NO SCAR AT ALL. The doc cut me about 6 inches along the crease line of my under belly. It will never show. My prostate was too big for a turp. I am now off antibiotics but I now have a nice case of thrush. Definately on laxatives.
The surgeon goes in and is hands on. He slices open my bladder and slices my prostate. He takes the guts out of the prostate and leaves the shell. I can still have orgasms now, well after I heal.
The only difference with me is that the incision is horizontal instead of vertical because I am over weight.
Most urologists that are surgeons do it. Some do it laparoscopically and some robotically. If I had known at the time of these other procedures I would have looked into it. Less recovery time.
Funny you should ask. I saw the doctor today to have my staples removed. I said I am having a problem with erections. He said it may take a month or two to come back if it does. I said NO you don't understand. I am getting them NOW. I am afraid that I should not be thinking about sex this early. I even got pre-cum after seeing some sexy ones on TV. He said that is very unusual that this would be happening at this point. He said give it two weeks and have sex. He said obviously my sexual functioning was not damaged.
Also a funny story. I came home from the hospital after 5 days recovery. I want to the bathroom and stood touching my shins to the front of the toilet bowl. I let loose and splash all over the front of the toilet tank and on to the floor. What a mess. Also, my incontinence is gone. I was using pads in my underwear before but I don't need them now.
I was on the table for 80 min
It seems to me that the FLA (fFocal Laser Ablation) procedure has thr same effect with less trauma. Takes a lot longer for the surgeon.
Did he cut open your bladder or your stomach ? Hank
