Hello,
I'm new to the group I just had surgery three days ago I had my gallbladder removed surgery went well it was an outpatient I'm at home resting now. Does anyone know how long does recovery take? Everytime I stand or sit I have pain by my insicions. The doctor said I am not on a diet and I can feel free to eat anything I want is that true?
This is all new to me.
I had mine removed 15 days ago. It is true. You can eat anything u want. But I stayed on a strict diet the first week to be safe. 15 days later and I feel great now. The first week take it easy. Don't lift more than 10 pounds the first 2 weeks. The incisions will be sore for about a week. Good luck and hope u have an easy recovery!!!
Omg I feel bad now its only been 3 days since surgery and u already had a slice of pizza and tacos. 🙄
I feel good so far just a bit sore still and sometimes my shoulder gets sore does that happen to you?
How long did it take you to recover? Like being able to get up without pain or discomfort?
Hello you all. I'd like to educate you. I had mine out a year ago. You have to stay on a low fat free diet. Be careful of what you eat. I was like you all ate pizza, hamburgers, just a week after surgery. About 1 month later had to go back in hospital. Had a stone stuck in common bile duct. Had to get another surgery to remove it. You can still produce stones. From eating fats they can still develop and make you sick again. That's why it is important to stay on a fat free diet. I had to learn the hard way. I was scolded by my doctor not to eat fats too soon. Even though your surgeon told you that you can eat anything is wrong. I hope all of you take my advice. Your incisions will take a couple of months or longer. They have to heal from the inside. So no lifting or lifting anything heavy for a few months. You might think you are ok but Be careful. You had major surgery. It took me about 3 months to heal inside and out. Please take care of yourselves. Take care .
Wow I didn't know that you can get another stone stuck after the gallbladder has been removed. That's scary! Thanks for the feedback. How long were you on a low fat diet for after surgery?
I was on a fat free diet for about 7 months. I was scared and I was very careful what I ate. Everyone is different. After a year I now can eat what I want within moderation. I'm glad you responded to me. I just hope you watch your diet. I don't want you to get sick. Ok. 😍
How long did it take you to recover? This group is awesome! I'm new to this and this is my first surgery. I'm still learning a lot.
Hi Yvette. It took me a full year. Would have been sooner. But I had a delay of 3 months because of another surgery. Its called an ECRP. Its an evasive surgery to remove the stone stuck in my common bile duct. They go down your throat similar to an endoscopy and go in your large intestine by slitting it and fish out the stone. It comes out when you go poo. Boy it hurts after surgery so bad I cried until I received heavy pain meds. They also cleaned out my bile duct because it also had sludge. I'm telling you you don't want 're his surgery. I also contracted pancreatitis. Because the bile backed up in my pancreas. But it was acute. So I recovered fully. 😎
Hi I’ve decided to have surgery and from what I’ve read people heal and get better in their own way, i would slowly reintroduce foods previously avoided ie fats. That’s what I’m going to do. I haven’t had a cheese sandwich or anything like this in five years so I know my body has grown accustomed to a low fat diet. I think I’ll stick with high fibre, mostly veggie diet and slowly start enjoying other foods my gallbladder couldn’t accommodate previously. Speedy recovery and do what you think is best for you!
Wow! Thank you so much.
Hopefully I recover soon.
You will. Be optimistic. Be strong. You will have good and bad days. Have a great life. Bye.😄
Yvette,
It usually takes about five weeks to recover, and one to one and a half years until you are fully healed inside.
You just had your gallbladder out, so pain is expected. I had pain until my third week of recovery. Though, everyone is different. Your doctor should have given you a prescription for pain meds, just in case.
I am surprised your doctor didn't put you on a low fat diet. Just remember to drink plenty of water, take a walk at least once a day, get plenty of rest, and eat lightly. Your body is getting used to working without your gallbladder which stored bile until needed for digestion. Do not do any exercise other than walking. No heavy lifting for five weeks or until your doctor says it's okay. By the beginning of October you should be feeling so much better! Take care.
Hi the recovery tends to be very individual mine has been 6 weeks but I had larger stones which meant a bigger operation, longer time to recover and allow myself to get over the soreness and pain. Make sure you take your time with the recovery it may be Laprisscopic choleostomny. It’s still a big surgery and takes time for the surgery incisions which are not just the surface ones but the nerves to repair and body to heal.
I eat soft foods low fat for the first two weeks to help my digestive system as I do not feel like a lot to eat. Soups, mashed potato, foods like that. Porridge is really good with Honey.
The gallbladder helps the body to break down the fats from the foods we consume, I personally found that I felt slightly nauseous for a few weeks while my body adjusted and I made sure that I avoided bad fats, fried anything greasy.
Some people, find that if they fatty foods to quickly after surgery can make the bowels a bit loose. I was the other way sorry that be graphic I was struggling to go to the bathroom. I also had a supplement called activated charcoal which was great for dealing with the excess gas after the surgery which can be very unpleasant. These were really good for that. I hope this has helped you good luck with your recovery kind regards Joanne
If you had laparoscopic surgery, it’s about three weeks or more depending on how fit you are or if you have other medical conditions. If you had open surgery, it’s about twice that at least. Just don’t lift anything- don’t even fill a kettle and don’t drive. Important to move about though. Don’t sit still for hours. Even juggling feet helps prevent DVT and walking, even round the house or garden, aids recovery and keeps bowels open.
They do tell you you can eat anything. For some people this is true but it’s not advisable to eat spicy foods or very fatty foods for a while. Fats should be reintroduced gradually. Also don’t overload the stomach. It’s better to eat five or six small meals at first instead of three main meals. Just be cautious at first. Eighteen months on I still struggle eating fatty foods. I can eat fat but only in small amounts. Fish and chips and pizza are definitely out for me. Hope your recovery goes well.
