knee injury

I am a 52 year old female.  I fell on my right knee, after 2 weeks I saw a doctor that said I had pulled some muscles.  It has stayed swollen and hurts so bad that I can no longer walk on it.  I went back in and the doctor said that I had torn the xcl ligament in that knee.  I have not yet seen or heard of the xcl ligament in the knee.  Can someone explain to me where this ligament is in the knee, or if they meant that I had torn both the acl and the pcl.

The cal and mcl are the 2 ligaments in either side of the knee that give it support. You generally hear of. A tear to either of them associated to athletes. The tears come when the foot is planted in t h e turf and the player makes a sudden and violent turn or is hit from the side with enough force to tear a big strong ligament. Generally it takes an MRI to diagnose a soft tissue tear and damage. An athlete can expect to miss close to a year as it is a surgery that requires a rather large incision and depending on the tear a lot of stitches and therapy. Personally I wouldn't let anyone touch me until I had an me I and a sports medicine doc looking at it. I don't know how things are in your area but here every major hospital prides themselves on sports medicine departments. As a matter of fact, the hospital I use is the SMD for 3 major league sports teams plus a couple of universities. Good luck.stay in touch

This blasted computer....should be acl and mcl. I swear it must be related to my wife, it corrects everything I say

Go back and get a proper explanation that you understand. It needs monitoring but sound like what I did when I fell over (yes over, not off) a treadmill and regrettably I delayed having an MRI. It was really painful, dont walk, use crtuches, and in the end it hastened my TKR. I was 52 when I did it and now I am 57, had 2 lots of surgery last year and my TKR 27th January - and finally I can walk properly when I set my mind to it !
