Knee pain after thr

i was wondering if anybody has any suggestions about knee pain. I had a thr in July of last year which is now 7months ago, and although most things are going ok my knees are really painful, I have been doing knee strengthing exercises but nothing seems to work, considering my knees never ached before the op it is very frustrating.

hello valerie, I'm post-op same time (july 2014) and had a few niggley pains on my knee's at first and at odd times on the right (same side as THR)  I think it maybe due to that all the time my right hip was failing I had a walking gait that put pressure on my knee joints. Now  I have not had any pains at all but had the odd ache on the right knee, don't feel concerned about it as I had this for some years - had a couple of  'offs' riding motorcycles when I was much younger and always seemed to go down on the rightside!. Have you consulted a physio?

Regards Arthur

Thank you for your reply, I have not contacted anyone yet as I thought I would see how it goes, but I might have to eventually. I think it might have something to do with walking.

Regards val

I am 5 months post op. Woke up after op and my knee hurt on my operated leg, 5 months later still have pain in knee so bad I can't bend it probably although it has improved with exercises but still cannot fully bend because of sharpe pain across knee cap.. It's also still swollen and feels tight all the time. I can't use stairs properly or get in and out of car without lifting myself in and out. I'm in a catch 22 ,need to bend to improve movement but can't because of the pain. When I walk I don't have pain in it though ,it just swells up. Surgeon and Gp tell me it's not uncommon as during op the knee goes through a lot with banging the thingy down the thigh. It's driving me mad. I swapped one pain for another !!!!!  I still can't put my sock on and it's stopping me from progressing a good recovery for my hip.! On a positive note though my hip is not painful and considering I'm restricted as to exercises because of my knee it's great . Going to doctors next week as they thinking of giving me a steroid injection. I will let you know what they say.

I feel for you, i myself had THR in April last year and i've being getting knee pain which i've never had before.

Thank you Linda that is really helpful, my knee is also very tight and swollen, but is also on the non op. leg. I would be very interested to hear what your Dr says as I am not due to go for another month or so.

thank you Carmen, I was beginning to think I was the only one, friends seem to think I should be fully recovered by now.

I should of said I also have tightness on my non operated leg at the back of  the knee can bend and move ok though no where near as bad as the operated leg, no pain across the knee. Also opposite side to hip op my hand is slightly swollen each morning seems to go down during . Have you iced your knee it does help loads and keep it elevated as much as you can, I put a pillow under my feet at night ,swelling goes down a bit  over night. Will let you know how I get on at doctors.

Thank you for your advice Linda, my knees feel a little better today.

Hi Valerie,

I have knee pain as well, but it is partly due to a ski accident in 2005. It flaired up quite a bit just after THR, I think partly due to a 1" Leg length difference. I've done 2 things 1) get Uflexxa injections in knee. That is a synthetic replacement of the sinovial fluid and adds cushioning. and 2) I have a step that I use daily. At 3 months THR, I started with a 3" step. It wasn't much but I stepped up and down about 15 minutes a day. It didn't hurt to do this, so I continued. Now at about 4 mos THR, I added a lift and it is about a 5" step. Still no pain so I'll continue with this for awhile. It has also helped with stair climbing. I had pain at the surgical region and the knee while climbing stairs, but it is getting better.

Good luck -Sandy
