I was squatting down at work when my knee twisted and I thought I had discolated it, the pain was excruciating! After a few minutes I tried to straighten it and it released. I had bad swelling for about a week then it seemed to settle down.
Since then it has happened about 5 more times and my knee feels really unstable. I have pain when walking up and down stairs and it hurts when I'm in bed. It's usually swollen at the end of the day and feels like it's hot inside.
This has been ongoing now for about 6 months and is really starting to make me feel miserable, I gave in and went to see the doctor this week and she is making me an appointment for an MRI.
I have never had any problems or surgery before on my knee.
From looking on the Internet I too thought it could be a meniscus tear but didn't want to self diagnose.
I work in a sports shop and I'm on my feet all day, last week when it locked I was crouching down fitting a child's trainers and the next thing I was on my back on the floor in pain! It's so embarrassing as well as extremely painful!
Sounds very much like a meniscus tear. The mri is mandatory to finding cause, degree and treatment. If in fact it is a meniscus anything from physical therapy to surgery is needed to repair and rehab. Over my years in physical therapy I've met a number of folks rehabbing meniscus and even though it can be somewhat slow and painful, its generally one of the most successful. Here's hoping they get a quick and accurate answer and can get on w ith your life. Most people can operate fine when they have the facts. Its living in the world of unkowns that's diifficult
I know we should all wait when we have pain and symptoms for the medical professionals tests and diagnosis but when the pain becomes all consuming it's hard not to want to have answers now lol. I'm scared that nothing will show up on MRI and I'm expected to live with this. I think I'm driving my husband crazy and he could be doing knee DIY surgery at this rate!
Its nice to know that there are other people who have experienced or are going through similar who can give advice and tips.
If anything will teach you patience it is joint problems in general but knee pain in particular because of the amount of pressure it gets from th e unusual twisting that goes along with weight bearing. Don't know if anyone has mentioned anti inflammatory meds such as aleve or Motrin and icing for 15 to 20 mins at a time. Rest it every time you have a chance and stay away from exerting any kind of pressure until you get a diagnosis. BTW an mri will show even the slightest inflammation or damage
Debbie I'm going through the exact same experience. And I must warn you about continuing to work. I was stubborn and did and now my knees are worse off than ever. I've had to wait to see the until the 12th and it started with just the one knee now both of my knees are shot because I kept working. Be careful.
I'm trying to do less at work but I can't afford to be off as I don't get paid on the sick. I'm going on vacation 4 days after my MRI so hopefully will get some rest.

It's terrible for me. I wait tables and can't right now so I have no cash flow in. I have a small savings and hoping that will be enough to get me through this mess and praying they don't cancel my insurance. Yes due to my stubbornness and not wanting to see the doc right away I now have two bad knees I just hope he can see on MRI what was originally wrong with first knee as I've been researching Internet for days and nothing seems to make any sense as to what it could really be... And I don't have a husband to vent to
