Hi guys, I'm awaiting my next consultant appt (and then surgery) for a big cyst on my ovary. So far paracetamol and ibuprofen (often together) have been keeping the pain at bay but last night that was not enough. I'd like to hear what others have taken/done or been prescribed to manage the pain? Especially those of you who've had big and mobile cysts! Heat, exercise, wine
codeine, stronger painkillers?
For those interested, I have 3 pains - (1) an occasional sharp stitch-like pain where I think my right ovary is (2) a stretching, pressured pain across my front with a "hot" pain just below my breast bone and (3) dull pains inside, often my kidney and lower back. I'd appreciate advice for alleviating pain for any of these symptoms!
Initially when my pain started, had about 10 days of not knowing what was causing it lying down helped as being upright seemed to make it worse, I remember abandoning the bread I was toasting to lie down it was so severe. Eventually after a few days of codeine I found cocodamol good as lying down at work not practical! The pain eased off for me once I had it under control and I was mostly able to only use ibuprofen when needed. Hope you find something which works for you.
Hi. I'm sry u r going through this. I too suffered the same way u do for yrs. I had cysts off and on all the time. Finally after yrs I had a bigger cyst and they decided both tubes and ovaries must go. I had surgery 3weeks ago. I'm 34 yrs old and already had four kids so that was fine with me. I would definitely at least get the cyst removed and if u have no need for the ovary I would remove that too. Good luck
Forgot to say that I took omeprazole as I had indigestion/ heartburn too, could this be the hot pain you describe?
Thanks for this. I am holding off on using cocodamol until I really need it because a friend suffered very bad constipation with it. I know I might not get that side effect, but I really don't want to risk my only method of pressure relief (going the toilet!) being taken away! I am so big and swollen (I look 6 months pregnant) that I am not eating whole meals because I have no room! But I guess if I'm in pain I should just take a stronger painkiller if I need it!
Hi,
I'm sorry to hear that you are experiencing pain. The only pain relief that I found somewhat beneficial was Ponstan. If I took anything else, it was a wast of time. Heat helped to ease the pain a little. Also I found that wine helped to anaesthetise the pain..:-)
Hope that this helps a little.
Tkae care
Thanks Irish Gal! I've booked to see my GP tomorrow so it will be interesting to see if he mentions Ponstan when discussing stronger painkillers. Someone else mentioned heat too, so I've just ordered a cherry stone pillow. I'm hoping the acute pain is related to it being my period which will go away again, as I don't want this much pain from now til surgery! Ugh! Thanks for your comments. xx
Hi Amber,
Thanks for replying. I suspect the ovary this cyst is attached to might be damaged and need removed, and of course I want the doctors to do whatever they need to in order to fix me so I could cope without one ovary. Apparently the ultrasound showed my other ovary and uterus to be healthy and normal for now, though. Since I'm 31 and haven't had any children, I'd really like to keep my baby-making options open for the future if I possibly can. So crossed fingers the CT also shows just one big cyst on the right ovary and they can remove it without damaging anything else! Again, thanks for posting. xx
Pam
For women if ur getting pain like that u possibly have a kidney stone. Thats wat happened 2 me. My kidney specialist said since i dnt get my menzs and prone to stones to look out for that pain. I also have regular pain dwn there bcuz they are dead as i say but the drs say no good or its early metopause. My new gyn told me even if he passifiies me n takes them out im always going to have that pain. I would get a kidney dr to check it out, u nvr know it just might b a stone. Hope not its not a nice recovery at all...goodluck
