Opération de remplacement total de la hanche gauche la semaine prochaine !

Hi everyone!

Have just joined this Forum and read several discussions.

I just wanted to let you know that I am having a left total hip replacement next Thursday the 21st of May. I am a nervous ex-nurse, who used to work on an Orthopaedic ward!! I have never had an operation before, so naturally very anxious.

The hospital that I am going to often uses a spinal and general anaesthetic combined for this procedure, but I have degenerative disc disease and several prolapsed discs, so would not be happy about having a spinal anaesthetic in case it aggravates my condition.

Of course, I won't know what the Anaesthetist will recommend until I meet him next week on my admission. I'm hoping that I can have a general with extra pain relief via infusion or other means.

Does anyone have any experience in with any of the above?!

  Many thanks in advance. 😄😄

Hi cornishpixie, I to a having my hip opp on the 21st may, scary isn't it, I don't have the problem you have, but I'm having a double hr, I'm sure we will be fine.

good luck. Kaye

Hi Pixie,

Good luck, as an ex nurse-tutor who took tons of bloods abroad as an aid worker, I can't face seeing my own blood being taken....so understand your 'nervous ex-nurse' tag!

All I can add is that with yr medical knowledge you will be good at asking the questions you need to!

Think of you and Kaye - blessings be

Mic

Hi Kaye!

Well it's good to know that we are in this together.

Gosh, I didn't know that they did both at once!

You will be fine. Best wishes to you for next week, I will be thinking of you and keep in touch.

How long do you think that you will have to stay in hospital for?

This forum is a great idea! Very reassuring to know that we are all in this together, and that we can share our experiences.😄😄

Thankyou, Mic.

best wishes to you. 😄😄

Hi, I have to have both done as they are both bone on bone, I can't walk without crutches and I pain, they said I would be in for 3 to 5 days.

will let you know how I get on.

thank you mic

Ouch! Me too, but I've only got one like that, but the other is very slowly catching up!

This will be a new lease of life for you and I, but for you, in a huge way - you must be suffering terribly, it's bad enough on one side.

Are you all ready for your admission?

     Keep in touch! 😄

Hi Cornish and Kaye,

Mine is a bone on bone and TLHR I'm in next Thursday too. 21st May.  Guess we are a threesome lol. I'm in Kings Lynn Norfolk where are you two? anyway good luck to both of you. xx Catch you on here afterwards xx

Hi Gillcat!

yes, I'm the same as you, bone on bone, left hip!

I'm in Cornwall, having my op done at the Duchy hospital, which is private. Luckily they treat NHS patients too!

All good wishes for next Thursday. It really helps knowing that we are all in this together, and will be good to compare notes along the way.

Take care and keep in touch!😄😄

Hi..I had mine 15 months ago and it was the best thing I've ever done...not a fraction as bad post op as I thought. I had a general and was quite out of it for the first night....i was up on the zimmer the following day, up and down the stairs on crutches on the second day and home on third....no probs  and great physio...but you must do the exercises...good luck

Hi I am current  old SRN who had a rt hip replacement 3 months ago I am now in Sydney having my lt knee replaced

i moved to Oz 7 yrs ago and am now a citizen.

i too was terrified, we are in the business and we both know what can go wrong............but remember, rarely does

What I suggest from my own experience is contact the anaesthetic department and see if you can book a telephone discussion with the anaesthetist and see what he recommends and does with similar patients to you. Instead of a spinal he can give you an inguinal block which can deaden the pain for a couple of days along with the GA

Contact a Physio in the hospital and get some pre-op exercises you can do to strengthen everything up.

i also splurged on a quilted single mattress  topper and brought in my own soft pillows. The plastic on hospital beds and pillows is awful and you don't need extra discomfort.

good luck Sheila

Hi Crissy_wissy,

that sounds great, you obviously had a good experience which is very reassuring, although I'm aware that everyone is different. But everyone says that it's the best thing they've ever done.Im hoping that I recover as well as you did and intend to do my exercises religiously!

  Thankyou😄😄

Hi Sheila!

thanks for all the useful information. Yes, I agree, we know far too much! In many ways it's better to be blissfully ignorant!

hoping that all goes well with your knee replacement.

  Best wishes. 😄😄

hi cornishpixie ( how creative some of your names are!!!!)  - re Anaesthesia : I asked for general as I didn;t want to hear, smell or feel anything - put me to sleep and wake me when it is over .... I understand that it is not like that anymore and also the preferred way - Did GA anyway ... woke up fine,a bit woozy but not nauseated - No after effects - did you have your pre-op session yet? ask, okay and no need to work yourself in to a frenzy .. (like I did :-))

Hi Cornishpixie,

trouble is, we get different advice from whatever county we are in.

like in Devon the cream teas in recovery programme say cream first and then jam; but in Cornwall it's jam first and then cream.

so confusing: the key message tho is a cream tea a week is  good for sound healing!

I don't care which way is first, Jam or cream, just as long as I get one.  Had hip done 5 months ago now and everything tickety-boo.  All the best to you Cornishpixie.

Mic, Next time we meet, a cream tea must be on the agenda!

Barbara

Yes all ready for admission, it's been hard as I can't walk, can't go to work and have to sleep downstairs, in fact it's a nightmare trying to do anything, so all be it I'm terrified of the opp, it will be so lovely to get my life back.

having hair done today, at home , so that will be nice.

Hi gill at, I'm in Middlesex just by Heathrow airport, yes we are the threesome so nice to have the support of others going through the same thing.

good luck

Hi Mic,

well to add to the confusion even more, I'm a Devon born girl living in Cornwall- have done for most of the time since I was 3. So that just adds to the cream tea debate!

Anyhow, cream tea sounds good- making pasties for dinner tonight, so may just knock up a few scones whilst I'm at it. I'm all for sound healing!!😄😄😄

Hi Barbara!

Thanks for your support, and glad that things are going great for you.

Cream teas must be built in to the recovery programme, it's a unanimous decision!!
