Life after surgery...so far so good

So, having read numerous posts on here and various pages on the www relating to what to expect after cholecystectomy, I was prepared for the worst-case scenario.

But,hey, guess what I am the bearer of good news. 😊

I had my surgery 10 days ago. The surgery went well but I was in quite a bit of pain in the recovery room .

Anyway so far so good.

No painkillers since day 7. Don't get me wrong,I do have some painspiration but nothing that I can't cope with.

No diahorrea (in fact the opposite) but I have woken feeling nauseous the last couple of days.

I ate and drank on Christmas Day just like the rest of my family. (There should be no need to continue with a low fat diet after surgery)

I have done household chores yesterday and today and felt the strain so stopped and did nothing for the rest of the day.

I'm back to work next week and insisting on light duties only as I don't want to run before I can walk.

To those who read the worse case scenario stories and think that will be them,DON'T.

I'm proof (so far) that there are positive experiences post surgery.

Hi, thank you for sharing you good news  and I am pleased for you .      I am waiting for gallbladder removal, haven’t got a date yet. Only had 7 pain attacks in 13 months and most of the time can eat what ever I want ... find it very confusing and, sometimes feel that if I have the removal I may end up worse off  than I am now . I have read so many horror stories that I am terrified and one thing I dread is nausea..... I have only felt nauseous with one attack (a year ago) but read about people having their gallbladder removed and feeling nauseous every day after!                                             It would be great to hear how you are doing in a few more weeks. Take care

Thanks for your reply.

I was only diagnosed in August after a major attack which lasted 13 days from start to finish (I had a second attack early October, again lasting 13 days buto not as severe as the first one) I cut right back on fats but slowly introduced them late October. I had no pain relating to eating any specific foods apart from grapes. Late November I went out for a meal to celebrate my birthday and ate Italian -very garlicky and cheesy- with absolutely no immediate pains. However I am aware that time can take its time so moderation is probably best.

The week before my surgery I was still on a very low fat eating regime. I was finding myself in pain at the end of my 5 hours shift at work and felt drained. (I have since been told by a work colleague that she thought how ill I looked that week) I can only think that my GB was infected and if it hadn't been for the surgery, then I probably would have been on course for a 3rd attack.

All I can say is whilst reading through the negative stories about post surgery, there are many positive experiences.

Whilst my journey is still new,it is a positive one and I will continue to update my progress.

Stay positive and keep an open mind.

Glad you’re feeling so much better! My best mate got hers out 8 weeks after me and was showing off at how good she felt after it. She’s now had a few episodes of diarrhoea after certain foods so is laying off them for a little while. I was reasonably well after it but know I can’t eat too much fat as ended up doubled up vomiting and with diarrhoea within a few hours of eating. Yet managed to eat the same thing another time and was ok. It’s weird how some things affect you one day and not the next, and how different people have such extreme variations in their recovery xx
