Life after THR

hi i had my left THR over 2 years ago at age 49

everyday is not perfect but no severe pain as before the surgery
now over 2 years later i do feel great health wise and walk everyday
walking has done wonders for my hip
i was always athletic and fit - i gained weight when i went through pain before surgery and after
so anyone who feels slugish or stiff
get up and walk
get a fitness tracker too - its a great motivator
ok this is my 2 cents worth

totally agree . I forget i had the surgery until i am patted down but TSA

i agree i had a new right hip eight months ago at 76 and have found the best thing is walking it's great to be able to walk again free of pain now and again l get a little discomfort but considering the amount of pain i was in my life is now transformed.

sounds great you are a great inspiration, i have just had my second hip done and feeling sluggish and sore as it only got done late Thursday, i had first one done beginning of December and because of little or no activity i have piled on a few pounds! As soon as I am able I will try to do some walking! I am using walking frame at the moment in the house but looking forward to plenty of walking outside thank you for the incentive

hi Cyndey when i was recovering from surgery while in the walking cane stage - i would go out and shop - grab a cart to hang onto and walk laps around target , walmart , grocery store - all holding on to a cart and no one knew i had a cane was the best excercise

so agree - i took being able to walk for granted my THR gave back my life

Hi yes I have also done that with my previous surgery but unable to drive just now thanks

wow i feel so lucky, have been working in the garden laying slabs and paving bricks over the weekend thinking this is how it used to be until my hip went three years ago. so lucky to have had a fantastic surgeon and now not even noticing my new hip that is only 4 months old

Wishing you a good recovery Cyndey, pleased it went well.

i couldnt agree more with what you are saying walk and do your exercises i had both hips replaced within 7 months just under 2 years ago i was 48 great walking with no pain

HI Donny I had my second hip replacement on Thursday 18th April i was discharged from the hospital on Saturday 20th April because of the Bank holiday, I felt it was a bit early as I am on my own, I have a footdrop due to back surgery from years ago. i have to wear an ankle brace to lift my foot up while walking which I wear all the time except when I go to bed, I find it very difficult during the night when going to the toilet as i have to lift my leg to walk! its agony! I am finding laying on my back in one position is impossible! I feel like I have been hit by a train this morning and aching all over! I had my right hip done December 3rd 2018 and still not fully recovered from that! I am feeling a bit miserable at the moment! I hope to get through this without any complications, my last op my wound leaked so fingers crossed I wont have same problem how did you cope sleeping on your back? any suggestions to get comfortable in bed? I am up every hour and finding it very draining. MY heels hurt too especially not being able to move my left leg very well sounds like you have come through it with flying colours! i am almost 73

cyndey

sorry to hear your struggling i also found it very hard to sleep on my back as iam very restless i found it easier if i supported my back and shoulders with a few pillows as if on the hospital bed slightly elevated as it was so much easier getting in and out of bed try and stay focused on your recovery and hopefully there will be light at the end of the tunnel keep in mind not all THRs ate the same recovery my left one took a lot longer to heal and truth be told still have slight pain now and again hope his helps in some waykeep in touch if it helps you t feel a wee bit more encouraged
donny

Thanks Donny i will try! I Cant wait to get over that hurdle of sleeping on your back

Cyndey i also meant to say listen to your own body you know it better than any doctor if you feel tired have a power nap dont fight it thinking you wont sleep at night it will help you feel better during the day

your not alone in having bad days i can assure you everyone on this page has had them is how to get over them and back to positive days that matters and thats what we are all here to do help each other in any way

donny

thanks again Donny take care kindest regards

Totally agree Hipster Walking!! That was the advice given, going into have replacement done. That they saw patients walking down the corridor at whatever time in the early hours. So on my last night after all the nausea had wore off walked past the nurses desk (about 1am) and they were like, its you!!!! But even now after being through the op, walking is a pleasure again no longer a chore.
