Magnesium Oxide for constipation dosing?

Hi All, I am a 65 year old male. I saw an integrative medicine specialist for prostate cancer. Because of various medications and just my system I constantly battle with constipation. She suggested Magnesium...didn't really confirm which type. I found from my research that oxide would be the best to take every day (500 mg) Its better because of the low absorption rate. Causing some cramping and bloating but also helping with the constipation. My questions are: Is Oxide the best choice. ( I read an article here said that something like milk of magnesia is not for everyday use) and I've read all over online that people use magnesium daily for various reasons...constipation being one of them. She told me to take it before bed. But I have read you should take it with a full glass of cold water 1/2 hour after a meal. I don't want to drink a full glass of water before bed because I will be up all night urinating. I also take psylium fiber once a day first thing in the morning. Then I have breakfast (oatmeal) and then a green smoothie. Would it be good to take the magnesium before the smoothie or after lunch. ( I don't really want to drink a full glass of water 1/2 hour after a full meal.) I also have to juggle that with blood pressure medication and I also take flowmax for urinary symptoms. Can I take magensium oxide daily and how should I juggle it with my medications and the psyllium fiber? I also eat a high fiber diet and drink plenty of water. Thanks! Bob

What has your doctor suggested? I would follow only what your doctor has told you. Reading lots of articles online will only confuse you. Your doctor is the only expert you should be listening to.

I take Magnesium (tablet) whenever I’m constipated (once daily max), and I take it during the day like an hour after meal. The purpose is to help us go and I usually go in the afternoon, so taking it midday makes sense for me as it take couple hours for Magnesium to go through my system. Hence, not sure how it would help if taken just before bedtime. Maybe you can take it an hour after your breakfast.

I’ve never taken milk of magnesia, and have heard it might gut out your system too much. If I do want to “cleanse”, I use Magnesium citrate drink.
