Mattress Topper

Hi friends

I am just over 4 weeks post op and am still struggling where sleeping on the bed is concerned. The bed has a soft mattress. Is there anyone out there who can recommend a mattress topper that will make my current mattress a bit firmer please?

All the best

I was recommended a foam topper that shapes to your body, they are a bit expensive but works very well.  No back ache

Hi David,

I got one from Amazon just a few weeks ago.  I can't post a link because this forum doesn't allow it but I can probably message one to you.  It wasn't expensive and it had the best reviews.  It's so very comfortable, a bit of a chemical smell when you first unwrap it, and it's looks very small and flat, but leave igt gfor a few days and it expands and the smell goes.  I woud certainly recommend it.

Hi CelsB

Is it the 4 inch soft foam which costs about £55? My only concern is whether it works on a soft bed. At present I last about an hour on our soft bed before my operated leg starts to become uncomfortable. My wife is a bit sceptical and thinks we should shop around for a new firmer mattress.

Yes, that's the one I got, but my mattress was not in bad condition.  I just wanted more support.

Have you tried using pillows under your knee so that your leg is slightly bent?  I would try experimenting.

Have tried pillows but with no joy. As the leg heals more it should get more comfy but at the moment it is so annoying. You see life so differently when you haven't had much sleep!

I bet!  I'm as grumpy as a bear with no sleep, and do worry about having to sleep on my back.  It shouldn't be long before you can sleep on your side with a pillow between your legs.  That will be pure bliss I imagine x

I thought toppers made it softer ?

I used our spare bed for a time as the mattress was much firmer.

Hope you find a solution.

Graham

The memory foam ones are quite firm Graham.  I think you can get feather and down ones too which are soft.

When can I deep with pillow between my legs?

i mean sleep !!

I'm pre-op so others can help you more, but I've heard people say on here that the consultant will tell you you can after your 6-week check-up.  One or two have said they took the risk and did it anyway.  I am in no way recommending that

Fine, I thought you girls would be better informed than me about that !

Right there Cals, 6 weeks is the usual time you are allowed to get on your side (you can have a pillow between your legs before, but not roll onto your side).

I have been breaking the rules (naughty boy), and started around weeks 3 to 4 this time around, but I did not have full THR this time, so it is very different for me.  When I had the 'proper THR', it was at 6 weeks that I could get on my side.

I slept on my side from day 1. The hospital staff never commented. I started using a pillow between my knees about a week later when the post-op bruising came up. 10+ weeks on, still using it.

Should have said slept on non-op side. I've rolled onto my stomach (old sleeping pos) twice and almost onto op side once since the op but all of those freaked me out and I got up right away.

different hospitals or different consultants  =  different rules.

I invested in a memory foam topper shortly before my op and so pleased I did. I chose a Visco 7 cm one, a ltitle expensive@ £230 but worth every penny. My mattress was fine but a little firm and the topper now acts as a cushion. With some 3 weeks in bed following bilateral surgery I am so pleased I bought it. Lying and sitting on one place can still be pretty uncomfortable but the memory foam helps the pressure points, especially my coaxsis! Still getting used to the smell though!
