Menieres symptoms - can they be permanent?

I have Menieres Disease and I was diagnosed about three years ago.

I am constantly dizzy with tinnitus and find it hard to focus a lot of the time.

My hearing therapist has informed me that symptoms shouldn't last this long and a flare up should not last as long as it has (Permanently).

Could there be an underlying problem as my ENT consultant discharged me two years ago saying there's nothing more that can be done. Do I have to stay in this confused dizzy state indefinitely.....?

Hi Stephanie.

I advise you to see another ENT. For your hearing loss, have you tried cortisone ?

It has worked very well for me in terms of hearing loss. I took it by mouth but some people even get injections directly in their ears.

I don't know where you live but my Dr. in Nashville TN is a world specialisty on meneres.  His name is Mitchell Schwaber and he is affilated with St. Thomas Medical.  He has helped me alot.

Hi. Thanks for your reply and I'm glad you've got a helpful doctor...

I'm in the UK and so far haven't come across a doctor who specialises in menieres....

I could probably find one but at a cost.... something which I can't even think about affording right now 😕

Thanks for your response....

Cortisone wasn't offered to me as I don't think I'm considered to be bad enough....!

I have a hearing aid which helps but it keeps giving me infections....

My doctor won't refer me back to ENT as they've discharged me and don't think I'm any worse.... the doctor has said I also have fibromyalgia and is putting the dizziness and other symptoms down to that......

I'm suffering in silence as no one will help me....

Are there no specialist there.? I thought you all had socialized healthcare and was supposed to be for everyone. If you ever get the chance to come here my Dr is excellent. No cure but we keep it managed.

Also the ear injections help.

Yes we do have the NHS but also private Healthcare which has to be paid for. I'm guessing I'd have to go private to see anyone who specialises in Menieres.

Be persistent!! You are not better so keep telling the doctor! Please read books by Meniere Man (kindle download available) great for self help. Plus get yourself on a good drug regime. Im on double betahistine 3 times a day plus a diuretic, also had a grommet fitted plus steroid injections into my ear (stevenage nhs hospital). If you go to doc with facts and figures of how many spins you are having they must do something. I'm so upset for you! Keep out of noisy environments, keep stress free (if u can), no alcohol!! And lessen chocolates/sweet stuffs as well as no caffeine n lessen the salt. Read the books, it helps to understand what's going on in your ear. Chin up, your bad phase can't last xx

Thank you Angela. I think I will go back to my doctor....

Stephanie,

You symtoms don't need to be the worst so that you can take cortisone. I took pills for 5 days and felt much better already. Seriously, get a new ENT. You don't need to suffer!!!

Thanks... I'm gonna try my doc again.....

There are excellent doctors in Europe specialized in Menière. I am living in the US now and can't wait to come back to get good, and affordable treatments. I am sure you can find excellent doctors in the UK
