menieres

hi I am using bethahistine and prochlorperzine for menieres disease but its not hlping me much still feel quite dizzy not spinning and feel sick any one else used these two meds together

Yes I have, at first I felt as you do, and worried that nothing was helping, but after a while it gradually got better -but still some dizziness. I now don't take the prochlorperazine unless really spinning and need to sleep. The betahistine helps with the dizziness a lot I think, but it is still there and I still feel slightly sick sometimes. I have heard that betahistine can make you feel a bit sick anyway, but most of the time with Ménière's it goes largely unoticed as we tend to feel sick a lot anyway! Hope you start to feel a lot better soon

What dose are you taking I take 16 bethahisine 3times a day and 5mg of the other twice a day

16mg betahistine 3 times a day. The Stemetil was 5mg 3 times a day too - i took it for only one week, it mostly helped my anxiety as I was still dizzy, but it helped with the spinning. Then I saw ENT consultant and got betahistine. I was already feeling a lot better. Interested to know if people still have aural fullness with the betahistine, as I do - although it's not as bad it's still a bother.

The side effects of prochlorperizine by itself can cause dizziness. I don't know your dosage but you may not be tolerating it. Do you have meclizine or dimenhydrinate (this is over the counter in US for motion sickness) available to you?

This is what I was told : Ménière's is when the inner ear is full of snot and so the right side or brain (ear & eye) tell it conflicting info in relation to the left side. The meds simply stop the nausea. Until the brain has adjusted to accommodate the conflicting info and to learn which side to trust, the symptoms carry on. So meds used only during very acute phase ie 1 week and then off meds deal with symptoms. I was quite wobbley for 3 days after coming off beta histamine. And basically get over the viral illness that's causing the mucus in yr head to cause conflicting info.

Works for me

Yes I'm on betahistine, and still get fullness and tinnitus, and also dizzy sometimes

You were told Ménière's is a viral illness? Curious

Betahistine is designed to treat the inner ear dissorder by reducing the fluid pressure in that part ot the ear. It takes time to work and you may need a high dose. Your specialist should be consulted. My dose was raised from 16 to 48mg tds and that did the trick but I was advised that the dosage might need to go even higher.

Prochlorperazine is basically an antipsychotic drug, with sedative and anti nausea properties. I was advised to only use it to help with an acute episode and I am glad to say I have had none for 17 months now.

I had never heard anyone say that menieres is due to snot in the inner ear. I know that people get this in the middle ear, and sometimes need it cleared out, and grommits, or have to blow hard through the nose. (Glue ear.)

I am taking 48mg betahistine x 3 times a day. I started at 16mg(1 tablet) x 1 per day and increased the dosage by 16mg per week until i had no vertigo attacks. Actually had my last attack when I had taken 32mg(2 tablets) x 3 times a day and I carried on to 48mg x 3 times a day to be safe.My ENT said I could go to 64mg x 3 times a day. Haven't had a vertigo attack since April 2015. I don't take anything else.

I didnt know you could increase to that dose

The dose can be increased only under care of specialist - GPs won't prescribe more than 16mg X 3 a day!
