Menopause - Perimenopause and Nausea

Hi Susan, I don't know about the link you're referring to but maybe I can help. I've been suffering from nausea for almost 2 years now, it's been so bad I can't function properly on a day to day basis. I noticed by chance that drinking a sports drink seemed to ease it a little and when I researched it I found that nausea is a symptom of low potassium. My blood tests showed normal potassium levels but I looked into it anyway. We need about 4700mg per day and supplements only contain up to 100, so that's no good, so I went out and bought bananas, sweet potatoes and avocados. I've been eating 2 bananas (400mg each!), a sweet potato and half an avo each day for the last 4 days and I'm feeling so much better. Hardly any nausea and my constipation is a lot better too. My diet before was extremely healthy and contained a lot of fiber so it wasn't lacking in that department, I just needed a boost in potassium. Please give it a try and let me know. Good luck x

Thank you for this. I know my potassium is low and sodium is high. My nausea is off the scale. I can't function and am completely disabled by it and other perimenopausal symptoms. I will try this if I can get some food down me that is. :-/ Thank you for your input. Something else to try. I'm desperate and can't afford to lose any more weight.

Hi there, I know how you feel! Please let us know if it helps x

Thank you. Will do.

I too have had bouts of really bad nausea. The sports drinks seemed to help me too. That and ramen noodles. Which, I know the noodles aren't great for you and that would be too much sodium. But, I literally lived on those two things for about 5 days after being in the hospital for nausea and passing out. Which was from not being able to eat.

Amber you sound just like me a few months ago! I felt like I was reading my story. I am better now and have been able to put on weight. How are you doing?

Thankyou so much I will give this a go x

Thank you for your post.  On Sunday & Monday I woke up feeling so  nauseous; I  thought i had food poisoning.  I so glade to have found women who are going through the same thing that I am.

I was just thinking the same thing. And YES!! I had HORRIBLE morning sickness with all 3 of my children. I am 48 and in menopause. JUST found out. And I just started having "morning sickness " stomach cramping (after coffee) stomach pain and NOT wanting to eat. Tonight I had soup. Stomach still in pain.  This is new for me it just started maybe two weeks ago.

I love your commentary has truly helped me thank you All

YES everything but feeling cranky. It JUST started for me. Today felt unbearable.

Lol mine too 🙄

I'm 56 years old. Have had Ibs forever. Was totally vomiting for 3 months during my pregnancy.  Have always gotten. carsick, sea sick, airplane sick and any other motion sick. Been in menopause for 4 years. Have suffered from nausea, slight headache and bloated on and off for years. But recently hormones are changing and getting these symptoms more often and lasting longer. Hot flashes a bit worse. Gastric says I'm fine.. Gyno says these aren't menopause symptoms. Which I believe is bulls**t!! Hormones control every function of the body.  Thinking of asking Gyno to crank up the hRT cream. So sick of this. Gonna try the ginger but it didn't help during pregnancy.  Thanks for all the info. Just great to know Im not alone.

I am heading into my 5th year of perimenstral nausea. Some days are worse than others...have been pretty crappy for the past 5 days had to miss a day of work it was too gross. I am on birth control to help it which it does as before everyday was awful. I am grateful we have a menopause clinic here in Edmonton but it has taken almost a year to get my consultation appointment. I am unable to use ginger as it gives me wicked gerd. I was one of the lucky ones with my pregnancies and had very little nausea but paying the piper now. My only solice is a friend of mine had it for 5 or so years then it went away when she finally hit menopause. Eating small meals is the only thing that helps me...and sipping water.

Eva, if your still following this forum can you repost proper link or provide information on what you found to stop the nausea.

Hi- it’s so crazy how the symptoms come and go..makes me feel even crazier! Haven’t been nauseous for a couple months but definitely had other stuff..heart palpitations, always feeling warm but not exactly hot flashes, headache, body aches, exhausted..Quite honestly nothing helps any of it except walking and reminding myself it’s not fatal (hopefully!!) it’s just hormones!! Ugh..sorry I am no help but it’s good to be in touch and know we are not alone!

I had terrible all day sickness with all 3 of my pregnancies. I was very nauseated for about 4 months. I felt like I was pregnant all over again. I took dramamine with meclazine every day.

What made everything worse was the oral HRT. It gave me severe depression, mood swings, anxiety and gave my head weird sensations like swirling, throbbing, buzzing, humming and terrible IBS-D with hot flashes, heart palps and anxiety during every bowel movement. I asked severel of my doctors and they were all perplexed.

I had unusual side effects that are not listed for oral HRT. But as soon as I stopped taking them all my symptoms went away. Thank God for Cleveland Clinic!

My original OBGYN never called back when I said i told his wife (secretary) I felt like killing myself. I ended up going to Cleveland Clinic. The doctor put me on the patch and WOW what a difference. I suffered for 8 months because of a doctor who didnt really care about my side effects from oral HRT. Get yourself to a specialist for menopause. A regular OBGYN may not know how, why or even care if you are getting better.  Ask for the patch if the pill is giving you any side effects. I am on a much smaller dose and no side effects what so ever.

I am 42 and have debilitating nausea and vomiting, hot flashes, night sweats and I still have monthly cycles. I have Hashimotos, Fibromyalgia and osteoarthritis. The nausea and vomiting is so severe that I frequently miss work and social activities. I have had numerous test from MRIs to MRCPs with no luck in finding anything wrong. I believe all this to correlate together but medical professionals haven't. This has been going on for 10 years and becomes very depressing. If anyone can help it would be greatly appreciated, as this is causing problems in numerous areas of my life. Thanks to anyone who may be able to help.

Hi Amy, have you tried using bio identical progesterone cream? I had the same nausea 24/7 and it is 90% gone now that I use the cream. It must be the natural one though, not synthetic. xx

I will look into that. Thank you

This is an awesome piece of information which has quelled all my anxiety. I am 53 years old now and now in menopause. My nightmare journey commenced this year August that 2 months after my 53rd birthday. However prior to this time when I was 49 years old just 3 months to my 59th birthday, I woke up one morning vomiting. I ended up in hospital and was told I had thyphoid. I was on a one day admission. This repeated itself about 3ce in subsequent years I was treated with antibiotics. But oh no in march 2017 I was not too well did urine MCs and was found to have UTI. I was treated. In August I now had UTI I was admitted and well treated. Funnily the journey of nausea had gradually begun in march and got worse in August. Could not eat no appetite. Began to loose weight. I had to see a gastroenterologist. I was asked to take motilium for 5 days while i did all tests pelvic abdominal scan, tumor markers of all sorts, hiv, diabetes, kidney functional tests, liver functional test, thyroid test, thankfully to God everything was normal. I recently did endoscopy still normal. This gave me peace. The gastroenterologist concluded it was a menopause challenge but annoyingly my gynaecologist thinks otherwise. My specialist has been great and linked me to this site.

Truly truly this site has helped me tremendously. The ginger tea has helped me. I take it 2ce daily morning and night also I chew a little piece of raw ginger from time to time. My specialist has adviced I keep a diary of all my experiences because sometimes am thrown off balance with the nausea. All she wants to establish is if its cyclical like the menses or it just cones randomly. I have not seen my menses this year. I have been strictly adviced by the specialist to look for a working diet (bland), reduce oily foods, eat alot of fruits, drink plenty of water.
