After reading so many different views on mirtazapine I'm looking at it as the what is this drug doing to us?I've read more negative things about it than possitve not a good thing in my opinion don't get me wrong I was on it and gained weight. Now I'm off it to see what it does. All I can recommend is do some research before starting this medication it may work well for you and then again it may not Good Luck to everyone ๐ A concerned ex mirt user
MIrtazapine is the worts drug AD anyone can take. I used only for 8 months, 10 years ago, and only gained a lot o weight, developed asma, ruined my sleeping (now I only go to sleep around 8:am everyday), slowed down my reasonig besides other things. And worst of all is that I didn't get better after stoping using it, and it's been 10 years!!
Hi Cat - lovely to see you again. I've no doubt mirt works for many people and perhaps it's only the people for whom it doesn't work who post on here. I'm a couple of weeks down the line and now on Sertraline and feeling so much better, I have occasional light anxiety but my mood is so much better, I'm smiling again and enjoying life . . . and losing weight too
.
Hope you continue to do well :-)
I was prescribed it for insomnia and it worked great until I put on 21lbs I've been off it over a month now and no we, perhaps I had no other side affects as I wasn't prescribed it for depression or anxiety, my sleep is obviously not good now but not as bad as before, just need to get all this darn weight off! Lost quite quickly the first two weeks and has now slowed down, so have to face facts that I'll have to go on a diet to lose the rest. I would have stayed on it if it hadnt been for the gargantuan appetite it gave me ๐ฃ๐ฃ
Good points:
โReally improves sleep and for some people, this effect is long term.
โIs the fastest working AD on the market.
It helps with other things too such as allergies.
It can stop migraines.
Bad:
Weight gain in almost all cases.
โCan leave you feeling very drowsy the following day, although people get over this normally.
โIt gave me stage three kidney failure.
โWhen I came off it I found I had hyperthyroidism. Whether this was due to the mirt, or whether the mirt just covered it up, is the debatable.
It is difficult to come off once you have been on it a while.
Frequent night time urination.
โLight headedness on standing.
โConclusion - only use if absolutely desperate. Can be useful to dig you out of a hole and give you your life back, but beware, it may also leave you with some problems you didn't have previously.
I'm beginning to think you are right about it being the worst AD drug. I did have quite bad backache when I first started taking it but I put that down to arthritis and the fact I have severe osteoporosis (although I keep reading that this condition is not painful until you break something). 7 months on I feel like I have been bashed with a red hot cricket bat most of the time from morning until I go to bed. I purposely didnt look at the side effects pamphlet as I always did that in the past and would just put the prescription in the bin. However I did look at couple of months back when I started to decrease from 30mg to see "suppressed bone marrow". So now I am wondering if this mirtazapine is responsible for my awful backache. Could be a coincidence I know but I dont want any more problems with my bones. Now having read MirtazapinHater's comment about her still feeling the effects afer 10 years I am really concerned that nothing this drug does is irreversible!
I am on 45mg Mirtazapine , been on it for a few years as my GP prescribed it for sleep ( wasn't sleeping ) , i did find the lower dosages i slept well , haven't felt i have slept better on 45mg , psychiatrist last year prescribed Phenergan for occasional use at bedtime alongside the Mirtazapine , the psychiarist i have now has told my GP to give me the Phenergan on my weekly prescription to have nightly with my Mirtazapine , i have had no problem with it , weight gain ? - i don't know as physical health illness makes me unable to exercise much so i am overweight anyway .
Hi Maria
I am suprised to read you are advised to take Mirt & Phenergen regularly together, although nothing suprises me when it comes to doctors!
Its just that Mirt lowers the blood pressure, slows the heart, Phenergen does the same, so just wanted to add a little caution.
Best wishes.
I never had any problem , my blood pressure has always been fine likewise the ECG done on my heart recently was also okay , it is one thing i joke about as i suffer from anxiety but my blood pressure is always okay when the doctor or Nurse does it , the only time when it has cause for concerned is when i come out of surgery - put to sleep for operations .
Can only agree with you. Reading the posts in this forum for 3 months, Mirtazapine seems potentially dangerous. Mirt sounds to me as though it is in a different league to other anti depressants, and that league can be scarey. It seem to have a magic wand aura about it and some people can achieve improvements in handling their current symptoms but I would advice great care.
Oh dear you poor thing mirthater that is so sad ๐ they should take that drug off the market but then again it does work wonders for some people wish I could make a pill ๐ to make all of us better.I'm also a mirt hater for what it did to me.I'm going to try to get off another medication called gabapetin which I'm on for anxiety but I read some ugly side effects so I need to talk to my Dr I wish you better days ahead do keep in touch ๐
So happy for you Susan I'm still going through crude depression anxiety and crying spells I'm just not a happy camper right now please keep in touch ๐
I hear you Rosie the weight gain was horrible I put on over 35lbs and for me that is alot.now I'm going to try to get off another medication called gabapetin which I take for anxiety but it comes with horrible side effects.I'll see what the Dr say's keep posted
So right evergreen works for some but not for all what a yo-yo this medication is.I'm glad to be off it one less med in my life ๐
Yeah Elaine after reading about mirt really changed my way of looking at it for the worst I to started having lower back pain and wondering if mirt had any thing to do with it or not who knows? All a mystery or coincidence or??? I'm off mirt now so I'll see how I feel will keep in touch ๐
Hi Maria I to slept well with mirt on 15mg but the weight gain caused me to get off them so is the other med you take an AD? You take it with mirt right? I take a combination of meds and I'm fine your Dr wouldn't let you take the 2 together ifteydidnt go hand and hand๐ I'll keep you posted
Thanks Drew yeah I'm glad I stopped it won't go down that road again but you just don't know until you've been on the med for awhile and then you find out the hard way it's scary! I'm beginning to hate pills ๐ period!!will keep in touch
Calmer you seem pretty educated about meds reading your comments have you heard of gabapetin? Being used for anxiety? I read some ugly side effects on this medication can you be of help?thanks cat196111
I have been on mirt for 6 years i can say at the begining we all needed it for sleep or depression and it worked for some of us but later you start having lots of side effects....;so there is a good side and the bad side of it when you take it for a long time i think
Hi Cat,
Sorry no, I don't know anything about Gabapetin being used for anxiety, only know it is usually used as pain relief and for seizure prevention. Have you searched for it on this forum under its name, maybe get something there?
You say you are off Mirt now? How did you taper Mirt Cat ?
