Morphine constipation

Has anyone on here had really awful morphine constipation to cope with? After my pre- assessment blood test I had to have another one due, would you believe, to anaemia from an enema. I have never ever seen so much blood in all my life. Sorry if TMI but I think it will happen again and I’ve only a day left before I go back in. What the heck do I do? Please please don’t tell me to take sennokot, laxidol and drink a lot of water. Because I have been doing this!!!

I have ( I’m told) an unusually long bowel so I try to sometimes double up on laxitives whilst taking morphine due to this. I’m back in hospital for my op on Saturday, I’ve absolutely no urge to “go” at the moment. Once I’m in hospital I believe even more morphine will be given and I’m getting absolutely terrified. I’m taking sennokot X2 every night, plus Dulcolax stool softeners X 3 a day, plus LAXIDOL sachets X 3 a day.

A month ago a district nurse had to come to my home to give me an enema. That was after taking all of the above plus a suppository. I bled so much after I needed another blood test.

Please can anyone on here who has also suffered this way give me advice on what the heck to do? I can’t be the only one. This is all due to the liquid morphine I take in the night. I’m in agony, can’t sleep and 5mls morphine works wonders for getting to sleep. But it’s the severe constipation that’s dominating all the good the morphine is doing.

I just wish I knew the answer.

Are you still on morphine or opiates?  There is something called OIC, opiate induced constipation.   There is a medication you may want to talk about with your physician. It’s name is Movantik. Let me see if the link will attach:

Hi Sarah, constipation was never discussed with us beforehand. I was on morphine after my op and after 5 days in hospital got home and ate banana and grapes, worked a treat. drinking lots of water does soften and push along the stool but if youhave been drinking lots then its no use.  If you are bleeding after having an enema has anyone checked the bowel out to see if you have any polyps or haemorrhoid's? Has anyone ever suggested using fybogel on your breakfast? my husband used to have that at one stage. Can you have an alternative to morphine? not much help really?

Try eating several uncooked prunes

Nothing worse I had it and felt like ide given birth try fib roger I think you can buy it I got mine from dr good luck

An alternative to morphine might be Tramadol. I substituted it for all the opiates I was on after surgery and it was just as effective without the many side effects.

I don't understand.  Even if the pain is so bad now that you need morphine why would you be on it after a straightforward hip replacement?  All I had after my hip replacement was paracetamol and ibuprofen and after a couple of weeks I didn't need those.  A hip replacement is supposed to get rid of the pain not leave you swallowing morphine?  Things really will improve come Saturday.

I had to have an enema after oxy so I'm not much help but continue what you're doing and forget about it  it will get better and you will eventually go. Try Philips milk of magnesia.

Never mind ....I meant Metamucil not milk of magnesia

Tramadol is an opiate. It also has can have some rather unpleasant side effects including constipation.

It is normal to administer morphine or equivalent as IV during hip surgery. My anaesthetist told me that she would be using Fentanyl. You then can be given an opioid such as Tramadol or an NSAID such as Ibuprofen orally after the operation, along with paracetamol.

Had some problems. Eat, eat, eat and drink water the walk, walk walk. Also, try a coffe drink!

Try to change your diet. Eat loads of veg. Prunes, dates, beans....Linseed on cereal is good. Al the best with your op tomorrow.

After both of my total hip replacements I had constipation due to pain medication. That always scares me . My niece who is an RN told me to mix equal parts of orange juice, prune juice and 7-up. I used 1 half cup each and drank it down. It really doesn't taste bad and in about 2 hours I was very happy . If you need to drink two batches do so. It won't hurt you.
