Morphine insomnia

For a while now i have been on tramadol for pain and amitriptyline to help me sleep, the amitriptyline has been working fantastic to help me sleep.

i have now also been put on morphine to take with my tramadol to help with the pain because tramadol on there own are not working.

But now if i take the morphine during the day and my sleeping meds on a night like usual the morphine is stopping the sleep meds from working. Anyone had this issue?

its quite annoying because i know have the issue of 'stop in pain and sleep on a night' or 'not be in pain and get no sleep'

I think this is called - between a rock and a hard place! Seriously, I wish I had advice. I have been juggling doses nd frequency and just found a balance (at least for the moment). Wish I could help meaningfully as I know how frustrating, tiring and boring it is staring at the ceiling at zero dark thirty. Fortunately I found a suduko app on my phone and have whiled away many hours at night on it.

Sending hugs, and sleepy wishes.

Im just becoming increasingly frustrated. At the age i am i should be out having fun and so on. Instead i spend my days inside in pain, deemed to unfit to work in solitued and nights in an insomniatic nightmare haha

Hi Sara my husband before his opp was on Tramodol then on Gabapentan cause Tramodol didn't work and 20 mg of morphene patches, but they weren't controlling his nerve pain, either but after his opp 8 days ago he went onto 400 mg of Gabapentin 3 times a day( hosp use them) one 400mg of  Ibrufen 3 times a day and 2x200 mg every 6 hrs of Parasitmol plus 1 tablet a day to stop blood clots.the codeine from the hosp made him so constipated he felt ill so have left that off, not much pain just soreness now.

good luck, it's finding what suit you.

The norphine does seem to be taking the edge of the pain. Just is increasing my insomnia.

And its Sarah hahaha 😂

I do hope you can get it sorted, my husband has to sleep on his back for 5 weeks and he can't sleep so catch up in the day in the chair.time will soon pass, take care.x

Well iv had this issue all my life so its just getting boring and and worse as time goes on haha .

Good luck to your husband

I would bring this situation to the attention of my doctor, and see if he could come up with some other recommendation for either the pain relief or the sleep problem, or both. That would be his job, to use his knowledge to find solutions for you. Be a squeaky wheel to the person who has the power to suggest changes in your medications and maybe you will get some relief!

Yeah think i will ring on monday. Im at my whits end now like

This makes me so angry frown

Your doctor has now effectively put you on three opiates none of which will help with pain, or sleeping, in the long run. Tramadol and morphine are great in the very short term but in the end you just end up in a druggy fog with no sleep and the pain lurking in the background!

Sarah, this is my story -  I was also prescribed these, tramadol, fentanyl patches (morphine) and amiltriptaline for sleep  - they were even endorsed by the pain clinic at the hospital.

Afer about three months I wasn't sleeping, my speech was slurred, I was tearful, angry for no reason, depressed and had the shakes! I also still had breakthrough pain. Both my hips were bone on bone and it was unbearable, I could barely walk and couldn't stand for very long.

I read up about the drugs I was taking and didn't like what I read. I also spent my sleepless nights researching and found the drugs that could help me. Although I didn't quite believe what I read I was prepared to give it a go and I went back to the doc and told him what I needed.

I spent two weeks weaning myself off tramadol, little by little. I reduced the time I was wearing the morphine patches and when I had halved the dose I started to replace each dose with high strength co-codamol 30mg/500mg. Once I got over the initial woozy feeling I found that the pain was much better. I got rid of the tramadol completely and the patches and the amiltriptaline as well.

I took 2 co-codamol every four hours and had two ibuprofen two hours after the co-codamol. I believe that the tramadol/morphine/amiltiptaline combo had been stopping me sleeping because I started sleeping nearly through the night. I was also managing the pain better.

I don't think there is anything that completely gets rid of pain once it is a certain level but my head certainly felt a lot better and I felt in control of myself again.

Sarah, I was quite addicted to tramadol and morphine in the end and it was quite a test of strength to come off them but I can honestly say that life got better as well as pain relief and sleep.

You don't need to be in such a mess and I would go back and see another doctor.

Hope this helps.

I can admit i am not addicted to tramadol as i do my best to only use them when my pain is intolerable but i find they dont even work then. I dont even feel fuzzy or anything on my meds. Just dont feel anytjing ither than pain.

But the amitriptylne work perfect when i dont take the morphine (liquid)

Are you planning on having a hip done? Why all the pain?  Tramadol does nothing for me either -

I have CHD but after my dislocated hip was fused to the outside of the socket as a child j technically have no hip and no flexiable movement in my left leg. Also hip is 5 cm higher than other so big length discrepency which effects my jknees, ankles and created a curved spine. So im in constent agony from literally doing nothing. Iv already had 12 operations in my short life hahaha

Hello dear Sarah,

Checking in with you this morning

Do you know more about when you will get your surgery? I can't believe they would keep you waiting for so long -

Thinking of you and sending you light and healing

big warm hug

renee

Hi Sarah, a tramadol addiction only shows itself when you try to stop taking it completely. If you can find the strength I really would go back to the doctor again and get off the opiates.

Constant pain is a ghastly, never ending cycle BUT it can be broken by other, more effective things.

Someone mentioned a Tens machine and they can be really effective.

I also had some accupuncture free from an NHS physio therapist - maybe worth a try.

I can't tell you how different you will feel without the opiates but it is entirely up to you.

You so need this date to focus on now - I am waving my wand as hard as I can

I spoke to vikki the other day and she think i should be in for April but she doesbt have an exact date for me yet. She promises she will ring me as soon as she does

Hi Sarah before I had the operation I was on Naproxin 500mgs every 12hrs you do have to take Omerprizole with it to avoid stomach damage, also Amytryptilene as an antidepressant as Naproxin brings you down, I was never on Tramadol until after the operations, I was on Naproxin for two years as I was diagnosed with Sciatica, I needed an Xray, as OA was not on the GPs radar, I insisted on a more thourough examination, and was shortlisted in Jan last year, had the operations in May, then July. I had 1g Naproxins for a while in hospital, then stopped taking it once I was home, and used Tramadols for the pain, perhaps as many as 8 in a 24 hr period, I never had any trouble sleeping, like some do...

I sleep better if I take two tramadol at night, and I use them from time to time as needed, as I still get painful times with a limp from the pain as my left leg is catching up with my right leg, different haeling rates for sure, but often not taking them at all, as they have a lasting effect in me that lasts for about two to three days depending what I do, I do stand for long periods working in a casino, but often dont take a Tramadol, if the pain gets annoying I take one, if no pain then no tramadol, you will feel much better after the operations, then you will be able to get out more.

Keep in touch and let us know how you are getting on.

Kind regards Ian.

Naproxan was the first thing i was given but found that didnt work. I am using tramadol but only when the pain is intolerable but find tramadol dont work anymore either. I know take morphine with the tramadol which does seem to work but they interfer with my ammitriptylne and stop me from sleeping. Its bloody annoying hahaha.

Dear Sarah,

I sure wish I had some useful advice or could give you some real comfort. From my perspective, it is very hard to understand why you aren't first on the list.

I hope and pray that this will change soon and that the operation will give you all the relief and life you could hope for.

Life does sucking at times - hoping there is a fork in the road ahead for you with health and happiness.

L

Iv know idea were i am on the list now but i was supposed to have my op on Feb 29th.

Im just sick now hahaha
