Kim I've suffered with this as well I was tearing at my back burning and itching, I've been on pred for 13 months now started fr 80mg down to 10mg, it's obviously the side effects of pred, I'm still learning about this disease, I'm no help to you but someone will be along soon that's more knowledgable take care

Kim,

I noticed the same thing recently. I have itches on my knees. I apply Vicks vapor rub which is used for chest congestion but that ointment has eucalyptus and menthol. It stops the itch and is very soothing. The cold winter air here in NJ doesn't help.

Yes, I 've heard from patients of PMR this same complain.

I have GCA and I am on .Prednisone.

More likely the reason for the skin reaction you are noticing is the kind of medicine you take.

You will get specific answers here though - be sure there will be many Replies.

Wish you find soon the solution you need!

Take care.

Funny.  I always used to get dry itchy skin all winter, went through gobs of shea-butter containing body lotion.  This winter, on pred, has been much better.  Go figure!  smile

Try any kind of emollient cream/gel.  It's due in part to Pred drying out the skin.  If you are in the UK, E45 is probably the cheapest, but I use Double Base Gel.  You can get it from any pharmacy.

Hi, I have had a red vein like rash on both ankles for the last 2 mths.

My Doctor says its due to dry skin that turns to dermatitis and she prescribed  healthE Non-lonic Cream.   Doctor said its very important

to moisterise and older skin looses it fat under it.

The itching is a common side effect of pred and the "blood blisters" are because the pred makes the tiny blood vessels in the skin very fragile so knocking them or scratching damages them easily and they bleed.

If you are in the UK, Double Base or Diprobase emollient products will help the itchy skin and often the doctor will prescribe it for you - it is used a lot in eczema. It has no perfumes or additives which is also quite important to avoid even more irritation. A very large bottle costs about £12. It is best used after your shower while the skin is still damp so it keeps the moisture in the skin. And some of the products can be used for cleansing - because that is another point: using soaps or any cleansers that foam strips the natural oils from your skin and dries it even more so avoid them.
