Had my gallbladder removed 12 weeks ago due to pain from 1 large stone. Had the dreaded diarrhea for 8 weeks but has settled. Have the most horrendous nausea I have ever experienced. It's worse in the mornings and I can hardly get out of bed its that bad. Some days it goes by lunchtime and I feel ok and other days it lingers until the evening and then I feel ok. Was back in hospital last week and other than a little gastritis everything is ok. My surgeon said it will go in time. I am just wondering if this happened to anyone else and how long did it take to go. Its starting to depress me now!
I am just two weeks after surgery and my nausea has mostly gone. I feel it first thing in the morning, think it is mostly just from the movement and strain of getting out of bed then it goes. Not quite got my same appetite back yet though. I think your Dr can give you pills to help with the nausea have you been given anything?
The only trouble I have is one of my scans has come off what seems to be a tad prematurely on the breast bone area and although not quite a hole it is still quite a deep gap and not sure if I need to leave this to close itself or if needs stitched? Has anyone else had this issue?
Hi debZ thanks for your reply. My doctor has prescribed zofran for the nausea but not doing much good. My appetite is awful. Glad your nausea is going so quickly. Your appetite will return in time. My surgeon told me that I won't be able to eat a big meal for a while. I would get your doctor to look at the hole you have just in case you need a stitch or it gets infected. Take care

Its not fun to feel nauseated and not be able to eat because of the nausea. I also had gastritis some weeks later after the surgery and that was what's caused nausea. I think when you treat the gastritis, you'll feel better with the nausea and start to be able to eat more. Since surgery (5 months ago) I've never had again a large meal, so I lost a lot of weight ( which is great 
and I'm very careful what I eat ( no fried food at all) but I'm still getting a bit of burning in the chest ( it's so weird) sometimes it feels like I'm about to have a heart attack but my heart it's fine because I've checked it.

Hi Leni great to hear from you. I hope your feeling a little better. I spoke to a lot of people in hospital who had the gallbladder removed and most had some nausea and diarrhea and also what you describe Burning in the chest like heartburn for months after the surgery. One person had it for 8 months and then it just went. I hope it goes soon for you. On another note they put me in a ward beside a woman who had just had her gallbladder removed that morning and was told only tea and toast. She ate that and then ate 2 cakes from a box she had hidden! She vomited all night and then the next morning had her breakfast and afterwards had a big scone with butter and a load of chocolates!! She was discharged that day and said she was fine! I haven't had any fatty food let alone a chocolate since before the surgery! I hope your managing ok with your baby. It must be very hard to be feeling so sick and looking after a baby. My son is 4 and I'm finding it hard. Like you have lost a lot of weight and have to start on build up drinks as soon as I'm better. Keep positive if you can as I've no doubt we will feel better very soon. Keep in touch. X
Hi, I had my Gallbladder removed last August 2014 & then afterwards had to have trapped stones removed from my bile duct in the September! It was after that, once the bile was flowing directly into my stomach that my sickness began, I had terrible nausea worse in the mornings..they made me very dizzy ( a lot like morning sickness!) I went to my doctor and was prescribed omiprezole 20mg which I take once in the morning & once before my evening dinner! They have been a god send to me! They calm my stomach and the nausea feelings have gone. I do also now eat little and often, so the bile doesn't have a chance to build up.. I always eat breakfast, even if it's just a plain biscuit or toast & stay clear of fried foods, eggs & red meat.. As this was causing spasming from the gallbladder area,
You have to listen to your body & recognise triggers!

I have nausea about 3-4 x's a week. I will be going to my doctor soon and will ask him about this. Keep me posted.
Thanks Woo15. Am glad to hear your feeling better now. Am on zoton 30mg in the morning for my stomach too. My surgeon did tell me that the bile can build up overnight but that it will all settle down in time. I know a few people who had similar experiences and it took them 6-8 months to fully recover and feel better. I am still on a low fat diet although my surgeon is telling me I should eat what I want. The problem is I don't have any appetite with the nausea. Hopefully it will settle down soon. It's been a nightmare first the diarrhea for weeks on end and then the nausea. X
Try drinking ginger tea to see if that will help settle the nausea. I have bad bouts of nausea and it always helps.
So sorry to hear about your nausea. I have it still from time to time after 6 weeks from surgery (along with other problems). Some days I take over the counter Kaopectate which may or may not work and sometimes an acid reducer helps, but I wouldn't want to recommend them as I don't know how they may interact with your system. There is a prescription drug (the name is something like ondanestin--someone here can give you the exact name) that the doctors can give which has been a great help for me in the past. I would ask your surgeon about that. I wish you good luck!
Zofran is great for nausea. I worked in a nursing and retirment fcility as a C.N.A. and this is what we always gave to the elderly for their nausea. I have taken it myself.It works wonders! Ask for a prescription of this. This is also what cancer patients take for their nausea and you know it works well.

Thank you ndm and Angela. I have been taking zofran the last few days. It has helped a little but is giving me loose stools and unfortunately I vomited this morning. I just hope this nightmare ends soon. My surgeon said it will go but can't say when. From what I've Looked up online it seems to go between 3-6 months so hopefully I'll wake up soon and it will be gone. This is worse than the diarrhea! X
Ok I am glad you do take Zofran. Nausea should nopt be going on. You sound as if you may infection somewhere. I am not a doctor, but something is not right. has your pancreas been checked?
Hi Angela I was in hospital last week and had a load of tests. Some gastritis and a little bile in my stomach and a 7.5cm cyst on my ovary too! My surgeon said it can happen after gallbladder removal that you can get nausea for a number of months. I know a couple of people who had it too and it eventually settled down. It's worse in the morning as the bile has been pooling in my system overnight. It's worse than morning sickness. Please God it will settle soon as its really affecting my whole life. Am crying all the time I feel so bad. X
You do know STRESS can add to any symptom. Please try to keep calm as much as possible. I hate that you are going through all this physical turmoil! I get upset at times with my diabetes neuropathy, swelling, pain and I have IBS and a lot of diarrhea. I do understand being upset and even wanting to give up! We just have to try, or at least I do , to fight depression and know a brighter day will come. As long as we can talk on this forum with friends who have similar experiences we are not alone. That makes me feel good. I learn so much from all who post here. I will pray for you .Keep me updated!
Thank you Angela. The sickness is making me stressed and am frightened I won't get better. All I had was 1 large gallstone causing me pain and I end up feeling worse. It is making me depressed but I am fighting it as much as possible. Am so upset that this happened to me. Have had years of bad health and surgery and my surgeon told me it was uncommon to have problems after gallbladder removal. It seems very very uncommon to have this nausea after gallbladder removal. I'm afraid to go to sleep at night as I won't know how I'll feel when I wake up. Please God we will all feel better soon. Thanks again. X
Well 13 weeks today since the gallbladder was removed. Still vomiting every morning and feel horrendous. Zofran doesn't seem to be helping at all. Will this nightmare ever end. Has anyone else had this happen to them and did it go away? No one has commented on this that has had this happen. Am Getting very worried I'll be left like this. X
I'm so sorry this is still happening to you!! 13 weeks is a long time, must feel like an eternity to you. Also, since no one else so far has reported this has happened to them, I'm sure you feel alone and even more scared. I hope you get some help and answers soon.
Hi ndm glad to hear you have no diarrhea. That's great news. Hopefully the headache will ease off soon. Am at my wits end here with this nausea and am worried as no one has commented on it meaning it's obviously not very common. I called my surgeon this morning to tell him I'm no better. Waiting for him to call back. Don't know what else he can do for me now. Also have a large cyst on my ovary and am wondering if that's adding to the problem. Don't know if I can take much more of feeling like this. It's a nightmare. Finding it hard to look after my 4 year old son too. Hope you continue to improve. Take care . X
