Hi Leni I'm so sorry to hear this. I still have the nausea too. It's primarily in the morning and goes by lunchtime most days. I am also getting some pain under my right rib where the gallbladder was and in my back. Haven't vomited in 5 weeks but unfortunately was dry wretching this morning And haven't dry wretched in 2 weeks. Like you I am getting very depressed as I can't see an end in sight. I just want my life back but I really don't think it will ever be the same again. I feel a light has gone out in me. I'm awake since 5 this morning with the nausea. Have you been check for spinchter of oddi? Everyone is telling me it will get better but I'm starting to wonder now. I really hope you start to feel better soon and this nightmare ends for all of us that are suffering. Thinking of you. Take care. Xx
Acejohnston what do you take for the nausea? and Did you find out if the nausea is caused by inflammation in your stomach?
I think that it's because of excessive bile in the stomach must be destroying my mucosa in stomach and now 7 months after surgery I'm feeling the symptoms of gastritis: severe nausea, burning and a dull pain. Do you also feel all of this?
My GP prescribed me metaclopramide for the nausea, and actually helps me to sleep during the night but that's it I get it in the early hours of morning again and through out the day. I also have a constant dull pain too with a bit of burning. I'm scared that is bile induced gastritis but until I do some sort of exam to find out , I'm not sure. Are you treating your symptoms at the moment with any meds? What did your surgeon told you? You're the only person I talked to that is going through similar situation x
No I haven't been checked for spinchter of oddi. I'm seeing my surgeon soon and no idea what he's going to do but hopefully send me for more tests to find out what's going on. Have you been checked for that? What is it exactly? If we developed bile gastritis because of not having a GB do you think it will be a persistent problem even after treatment. Did you come across with someone that got worse after 7 months but then recovered?! xxx
Hi Leni so sorry your going through all this too. I had a scope in March and there was a small amount of bile in my stomach but my surgeon wasn't concerned at all and my stomach wasn't inflamed. I was taking zoton for my stomach and motilum and zofran for the nausea but I stopped taking them as they were making me worse and I haven't vomited since u stopped taking them. My gp tells me the nausea is a side effect of the surgery as she has seen this before with other patients and it has settled down in time. The pain I have is under my rib were the gallbladder was and just comes and goes. This only started in the last few weeks. My gp said it will settle down. I'm starting to think my nausea is from a large ovarian cyst I have as its a lot worse when I have my period. I'm going for acupuncture today to see if she can help me. I don't want to take anymore drugs. I am taking psyllium husks for the excess bile in my system and its stopped the diarrhea. You need to get checked for sphincter of oddi dysfunction as burning pain is one of the symptoms. The sphincter of oddi Is a muscular valve that controls the flow of bile. Some people get dysfunction of this after gallbladder removal when the valve isn't Working properly. Ask your surgeon about this when you see him. I hope you get some answers real soon. It's terrible to be suffering so long. Thinking of you. Take care xx
Thank u again for replying to me. I've taken all of those meds in the past except zofran. If you think you feel better without them then that's the best to not taking. I felt with Zoton and many other anti acids I was also worse.
Will it really settle or it could be another problem making it never better?
I hope you find the cause if it's the cyst than at least you know and maybe remove it. I'll ask to surgeon for the sphincter of oddi dysfunction if I have opportunity. I know something is not right and now after almost 8 months post surgery!
Is Metamucil the same as pysillium husks and do they help your stomach?
all the best of luck in the acupuncture. Hope it helps. keep in touch xx
Hi Leni I found all the drugs made me worse as I was drugged and couldn't function. I was on stemetil as well and xanax which is an anti anxiety drug which they told me to take with the stemetil to stop the vomiting. The side effects of the drugs far outwayed their benefits. Yes pysllium husk is metamucil. I'm taking the powder form which has digestive enzymes in it. I'm taking 1 teaspoon 3 times a day before food. It soaks the bile up in my stomach and bowel. A lot of people take it instead of the bile sequestrants that doctors prescribe. They also made we worse! The psyllium is really helping me and is worth a try. The pain I'm getting is under my ribs were the gallbladder was and it seems a lot of people get this pain after this surgery. I know it's hard to keep going with this Especially when you had none of these symptoms before the operation! But my gp had a patient who had vomiting and diarrhea pouring out of them for 8 months before they started to get better. It can take a year for so many to get over this operation. I'm hearing more and more stories every day of people taking 6-12 months to get over this operation. If the antacids are not helping it may be bile and the psyllium husk might help you. I hope we start to feel better soon and can look back on this and think how did we get through this. Take care and keep in touch. Xx
Hi. I just want to give you my experience, because it might help a little. I had one big stone. 2.5 cm I believe. When they did the ultrasound it still was mobile and wasnt trying to lodge anywhere. It was too big to get stuck in a duct of course, and too big to laser. I was told it needed to come out, I wasn't really given an option as they believed that over time it would lodge into the end of the duct or try to work its way through the gallbladder wall into the abdominal cavity and cause the gallbladder to rupture. I had my gallbladder out laproscopically, but with big cuts cause of the size of the stone. Come to find out the stone, a short few weeks later had already lodged into the gallbladder wall and was starting to burrow through so I was a short time away from a real emergency. I had no severe attacks, just constant minor discomfort. Please be careful and take care of you .
Hi acejohnston, was wondering how you're feeling now??
Hi cocoloco7 I'm a lot better than I was. Haven't had nausea or vomiting since September and can eat normally. Am still taking psyllium husk twice a day as afraid of getting diarrhea again but am hopeful will be able to stop it over the next few months. To be honest I am dealing with an ovarian cyst which was there when my gallstone was diagnosed and wasn't told about and believe the cyst was causing a lot of my problems. Have been taking milk thistle and herbs prescribed by my acupuncturist to get rid of it and have felt better since taking these and am hoping that cyst has reduced. I have also been diagnosed with a serious hormone imbalance which is what caused the gallbladder problems and cyst and seeing a specialist next week about it. Have you recently has your gallbladder removed? X
I have also been wondering how you have been and thought you must be better than you were as you haven't been around lately. Hope you get your new problem sorted soon.
Anita.
Thanks Anita but unfortunately this is not a new problem it was just never checked out! The cause of all my issues (gallstones, ovarian cyst, fibroid all discovered at the same time) was high estrogen levels which causes distress in the liver which in turn created thick bile which caused the stoned to form. It also caused the cysts and fibroids too and low progesterone levels. Unfortunately I had to find all this out myself and thank god my GP listened and did the blood tests. Estrogen dominance/ low progesterone is one of the main causes of gallbladder problems. Birth control pill, hrt and other hormone drugs and also excess weight causes estrogen dominance. I was on a hormone drug for years and was not told this was a side effect. I now wonder if I had the blood tests done last year when all this started and has been treated for the underlying cause of the problem would my gallbladder problem have rectified itself. This all leads me to believe doctors should do blood tests as routine for estrogen and progesterone when gallbladder problems are discovered and treat that first and see do the symptoms improve. Thankfully the milk thistle and herbs have helped me and I persevered and can eat everything without problems. I had stopped the milk thistle a few months ago and the cyst grew very big again so am taking it now the last 7 weeks and feel a lot better. People need to start asking questions about the cause of their gallbladder problems and look at treating the cause as so many are left with side effects because the underlying problem is still there. I hope you are doing ok Anita and are feeling ok and have avoided the surgery. X
hey 2 weeks ago i removed my gallbladder and let me tell you the week of, was horrible i couldnt eat anything. Right now, beginning of the week i thought i was back to normal because i never had any nausea only in the night time surprisingly then again i also have an anxiety disorder so pretty much ALL fears come in the night. But, i thought i was back to normal eating full meals (not full grease, rice and potatoes and chicken mostly), eating cupcakes, chocolate, chips and having my cravings of fast food again, like normal which i wasnt used to since before the gallbladder surgery i was nauseous for weeks. But now it comes the end of the week and my nausea hit me hard last night and pretty much came back this evening. Man, if this is my anxiety i swear, i dont take pills for it, i used to but that was teh major cause of the gallstones and teh nausea was cause of the pills so. But i'm at a loss of what to do, i thought everything was back to normal until the nausea stuck, will it go away any time soon? btw i really dont want to depend on nausea pills constantly thats what i was doing before the surgery and i'm sick of it sometimes it doesnt even work, i was high on zofran in the hospital and surprisingly i never had pain after surgery just nausea
, is there a way to pass the nausea faster? cause i have a problem HMG COA lyase deficency where i can't just stop eating like a regular person i need to eat breakfast, lunch, dinner and i have to have sugar before i go to sleep (if i dont i get seizures & coma) so might i say i sometimes force myself because my blood and nutrients drop drastically if i just stop eating or start eating less, thus me eating full meals for dinner. Anyways is there a way to pass the nausea faster than they say? surgeon said it would take a few days but honestly seeing this i hope it doesnt take longer than a month.
Hi there for most the nausea lasts weeks and not months. I was just unlucky and had it and vomiting and diarrhea. Zofran did nothing for me and no prescribed drugs helped. I stopped taking the drugs and Got acupressure wrist bands and ginger tea! Helped more than the drugs. Also anxiety is commonly linked to gallbladder issues and nighttime anxiety is a classic symptom of liver distress. It's to do with your liver which is most likely overloaded with toxins. Try milk thistle extract to detox your liver and it should also help with the nausea. Keep away from the fatty foods for a while until things settle and stick to plain food. You've had an organ removed and your liver now has to adjust to working extra hard without it. You can't just go back to eating everything straight away. It will take time. I'm fine now and can eat what I want but avoid too much fat. I also did acupuncture which really helped and my acupuncturist explained more about the cause of these problems than any doctor. Good luck and I hope it settles down for you soon x
Hi guys, Actually I'm writing from Poland bc in my country I was unable to find similar forum with people with similar problems. I'm 9 weeks after the op, and still suffering although arguably my symptomps aren't as severe as some of you described. Have had severe morning nausea to the point I can't eat which goes away after several hours and that's virtually all, but has been enough to pull my weight down significantly over the past two months. Ginger tea on an empty stomach helps a bit with this. First of all, reading through the entire post I feel reassured that we're not alone and patients from different countries go through the same hell. I've also been looking up to this post for several weeks and thanks to U guys I managed to glean important pieces of advice - obviously it's trial and error but some did help a lot. It wasn't until yesterday that I decided to register here. THANK YOU FOR BEING THERE, it is important to feel there is hope and some reassurence. Hopefully this nightmare will end soon, as in the case of some of you. As to the op itself, I am lost for words, my GB wasn't ill, they found stones but they were asymptomatic so it should've been left alone...if only I knew the terrible consequences!!! Patients are way underinformed as far as side effects. Its so weird, my grandmother had hers removed years ago and the next day she was eating scrambled eggs!
I noticed little activity on this forum recently, I'd love to hear back from U guys how are U feeling at the moment, do you believe it has settled for you over time, are you slowly coming back to normal diet (or at least some semblance of it), etc.
Greetings from Poland. Bartosz.
Bartosz
I'm sorry to hear your suffering. Unfortunately there's a lot of people suffering after gallbladder removal. So many people having this surgery unnecessarily and not made aware of the potential long term side effects. It will be a year next month since my operation. The difficulty is that doctors don't look at treating the underlying cause of gallbladder problems. The main cause is a hormone imbalance primarily estrogen dominance which is caused by hormone drugs, steroids and excess weight. I was on steroids for a few years which caused a hormone imbalance. I was put on a hormone drug for a few years which I believe caused the gallbladder problems. I am a classic case of estrogen dominance/low progesterone and have a large ovarian cyst and fibroid too all found when the stone was found. I recently had my hormone levels tested and it showed exactly what I thought low progesterone which means I am estrogen dominant. 2 other people I know who've recently had their gallbladder removed have also had blood tests and got the same results as me. This is why hormonal symptoms are commonly linked with gallbladder problems and for some actually get worse when the gallbladder is removed as it puts extra pressure on the liver which is responsible for balancing the hormones. I recently spoke to another woman who had hers removed a year ago and she had stones and polyps in her gallbladder. She has been sick ever since and in and out of hospital with stomach pain and bad constipation and nausea. She said she's only starting to feel better now a year later. For most people it will settle down but can take anything up to a year or two for some. Most will have some minor side effect and may not be able to eat or drink certain things. Again something we are not told about. I am a lot better than I was but still don't feel right but now I know it's the hormone imbalance that's been causing my symptoms all along and until that's addressed I won't feel well again. I can eat pretty normal now but continue to take psyllium husk powder as I'm afraid of getting the diarrhea again. I have spoken to so many people who've had this operation and realise now very few will have no side effects long term. This is an important organ and unfortunately removing it is completely unnecessary in so many people. I am now hearing they can now use laser to shatter stones and wonder why this is not the first line of treatment for people. I did have pain from the one stone I had but my gallbladder was ok like so many others. If the gallbladder is ok laser should be tried to get rid of the stones. My acupuncturist has been great in helping me through this and explained more to mine than any doctor. I recently saw a gynaecologist about my cyst and he summed up how the medical profession view things. He said you have a pain in your gallbladder area, they do a scan see the stone and remove the organ and hope for the best! For some it works and for others it doesn't. He said the same thing applies to my cyst I have a pain in my ovary they do a scan and see the cyst. They remove it and hope for the best. Sometimes they get it right and sometimes the get it wrong! Those were his words and really shows me how they think. Unfortunately
we all have to take some responsibility for this too as we all have busy lives and want a quick fix something I'm guilty of myself. Is there life after gallbladder removal yes there is but it's definitely a lot different than before. Hope you feel better soon. Xx
Hi
Thank you so much for your long response. I agree 100% with what you said. I am also glad that you finally started to feel better and eat normally. Could you just elaborate a little bit on the acupuncture issue? I haven't tried this before. Did it help you with digestion?
Bartosz so sorry only replying to you now. I found the acupuncture the turning point in my recovery. Traditional Chinese medicine treats the whole body therefore treating the underlying cause which in Chinese medicine is usually liver qi (energy) stagnation and dampness. The liver and digestive system are closely linked so removing that gallbladder has a knock on effect on the digestive system. They use points through the body to unblock stafnation. I also started taking milk thistle extract which she recommended and herbs for all my symptoms. I find the milk thistle great and would recommend it for anyone whose had this operation. It cleanses the liver and helps the bile flow more freely and helps in the breakdown of fats. Digestive enzymes might also help you too. A lot of people who've had this operation also take them. One thing if you can avoid ppi drugs as they can cause a lot of long term problems and are now being linked to gallbladder problems. They stop the tummy producing acid which you need more than ever now with no gallbladder. They are a temporary solution and once you start taking them it can be hard to get off them as you will get a rebound effect within 8 weeks which is when your tummy starts to produce acid again but we think it's the heartburn again and reach for the drugs. It does pass as I went through this when I stopped the ppis 3 months after the operation. I hope you start feeling better soon. Most people do recover within 4-6 months and for others it can be a longer process up to 12-24 months as your body slowly adjusts. Take care and hope I've helped. Xx
Thank you so much for your replies. It means a lot to me. I will definately think about the acupuncture, I have a lot of faith in traditional Chinese medicine. I've just started to get a bit better, but the process is painfully slow. Hopefully there will be normal life after the surgery, even if I had to forgo barbecue for the rest of my life. Take care of yourself. Thanks a lot.

No problem. You will get better. It just takes time. You'll be able to eat the Foods you want again. I know so many who were sick afterwards but most recovered. I've spent months thinking why me was it because my gallbladder wasn't inflamed? But I know so many who had bad inflammation and lots of stones and they had a bad time afterward but they recovered. My cousin was like me and had 1 stone and no inflammation and she's great! No side effects and can eat and drink what she wants! All our bodies react differently. Just take one day at a time and try not let it get you down. It's hard not too. I thought I was going to go insane I felt so sick but I'm fine now. Take care and let me know how it's going for you. Xx
