Neomercazole caused severe hair loss (female)

I was diagnosed with subclinical hyperthyroidism and stupidly started taking Carbimazole as per doctor's instructions a year ago. I have lost maybe a third of my hair and I'm sooo depressed about it. I cannot go out without using hair fibres to cover my bald spots. I am not sure if it's the Neomercazole medication  or the change in hormone levels that caused my hair loss. The worst part is that my hair is still thinning (but not as the same rate as before).

I am so afraid I will go bald soon and I feel that I got myself into a vicious cycle that I can't escape.

I would like to know from people who went through the same problem ...  if I stop the Neomercazole medication will my hair loss improve or will it get worse as my hormone levels change again?

Hello. My hair loss was due to no medicine. I started taking methimazole last month and my hair loss started slowing down. I have Hyperthyroidism/ Graves disease

I don't think it is because of Neomercazole. I am taking it since 15 months and I haven't noticed unusual hair loss or thinning.

Hair loss is one of the listed (rare) side effects of Carbimazole. If in your case the hair loss is due to Carbimazole then the medication probably caused telogen effluvium. You can google this term for more information. My wife had telogen effluvium and it was a nightmare trying to cover the bald spots with hair pieces. She dealt might better after cutting her hair short and getting a high-quality wig until her hair grew back. I am not talking about fashion wigs but the ones sold in special stores e.g. for those with alopecia or those undergoing cancer treatment. In the UK you might get a prescription to cover part of the costs.

However, it is much more likely that your hair loss is caused by your thyroid disorder. You could have had hypothyroidism after taking too much Carbimazole for a period of time or it might be due to hyperthyroidism.

If any of the above is the cause of your hair loss, then it is very likely that the hair loss is temporary. Don't despair it will grow back. In my wife's case, it grew back stronger than before and curly.
