Hi everyone. I just had a full right hip replacement (anterior approach). I’m thrilled because I can tell that familiar joint pain is gone. However, I have so much swelling and bruising from my groin down to my knee and it makes everything very uncomfortable - (walking, getting out of bed, sitting). Has anyone had a drain inserted during a hip replacement? It almost feels like most of pain is coming from where my drain was due to intense bruising midway down and across my thigh/quad making it very painful to walk. Nothing is infected and the drain site and incision are healing nicely. It will
be one week tomorrow. I’m curious to know what others experienced.
I forgot to add that I am 37 with severe OA of the right hip.
The drain was the most painful part of my last revision … sounds crazy I know!
Bruising and pain is expected, it is very early days yet. Things ease off at 6 weeks, and gradually get better as you are allowed to move more.
Thank you for saying that! The bruising around the drain site is far worse than any of the bruising farther up near my actual incision. I am convinced that it’s also the area that radiates the most pain when I walk. If the bruising wasn’t so bad I would be getting around great! I am happy to know you had a similar experience. Thanks for sharing!
I also had an absolutely huge blister from where the drain was secured to my leg. It was painful for a couple of weeks afterwards.
