Hi everyone. Just wanted to share what I learned from my surgeon prior to my revision THR. One of the requirements I had to follow was to get a new pair of shoes to wear after surgery. Closed toe, closed heel, slip on.
Why? We wear walking patterns into our shoes and bad hips create their own patterns of wear. So we need to avoid slipping back into the former walking patterns by beginning with a new pair of shoes after surgery.
We do not need to replace all of our shoes, just that one pair that we use the most. For me that was my walking shoes, so I bought a pair of Sketchers Air slip ons for after surgery. You choose what is right for you.
So while you are gathering your post op gadgets and readying your little nest where you will spend the most of your time healing, remember that a new pair of shoes is important also.
Interesting although l don't think we could wear open toed or nack shoes in this weather in scotland anyway at the moment. Be a new pair of boots or wellies lol
Thanks for the info though for me it would be my work shoes when l eventually go back but will keep in mind to get a new pair
oh Dawn ... you are so right - I remember this but never got around to actually buy new shoes - I am not an internet shoebuyer but received lovely tips from fellow hippies at that time -
I live out in the country somewhere in the East of Holland and they never heard of Sketchers .... WHAT ?????? I make do with crocks and some pre-op special purchased ortho-shoes - expensive and ugly !!!
but hey, I live in the woods and not in the city ....
Dawn, thank you for make ng total sense, you are so right i walked so badly before so yes you will need a new pair as your gait is now different, and what better way to make you feel better than a new pair of shoes.
I would not have known about this if my surgery training had not included it. It really makes sense and I did not need to fight the old wear patterns while re-training myself to walk.
So true! My first surgeon who did two of my THR's, did not mention anything at all! Really about anything! But the surgeon who did my revision was very thorough about providing needed information.
Sketchers are the rave here in the States. Cute slip ons that make you feel as though you are walking on air. Not heavy or bulky. Great colors and styles too. Crocks are comfortable too.
Blessings to you too Renee! You are a very sweet person.
Thanks, Dawn. This raises a point I was pondering (while lying awake the other night). I have custom orthotics that I wear in my walking/hiking and running shoes. I am wondering if they will be "wrong" now too. Because those babies were expensive!
I am not walking much yet following 2nd THR but it is valid concern and what your surgeon says certainly makes sense!
If you wore them more than often over a long length of time, then you might consider ordering new ones. It would be a shame to go through all this surgery so you can walk right again and then slip back into the old patterns.
