Newbie saying hello

morning all,

just popped in to say hello and introduce myself.  My name is Alison and I'm a 50 year old from the North East of England. I am 10 days post op TLHR and doing relatively well I think although sleeping on my back is a mare! I have an electric recliner which has been great in helping me to snatch some much needed sleep. I managed a good 3 hours in it this morning. Pain wise I'm not feeling a lot of pain and am pretty much independent in my daily tasks, getting around on 2 crutches quite well and overall I'm pleased with how things are going. I'm defo going to go for the right one done too but the left one had to be done first as was in really bad shape.

I've gained a lot from reading all of your experiences on here so thank you for that and hope you are all fighting fit again very soon!

I was just wondering if anyone could help with advice regarding my grabber. I found that a hook on my grabber fits perfectly around my crutch but sadly it doesn't take much to knock it off and once dropped its murder to pick it back up using crutches which are helping me to stay vertical. How did you all carry your grabber with you? Is there a knack to this?

Many thanks for any tips you might have for me.

Ali

Hi Ali and welcome to the formum.

Grabbers are wonderful and so helpful .......until they fall down. I used to use my crutch to manoeuvre it so I could pick it up but I actually bought 2 extra one for upstairs, one for down stairs and one as a spare. I managed to get basic ones really cheaply ( I can message the details if you want them) and they have so useful. Like you I have to get my other hip done once I have fully recovered from this op so they will always be useful next time!

Wishing you a good recovery

Hi Ali

Still waiting for my op date for THR on right, gave pre-op on 30th March.

Glad you seem to be doing well, like you I need both done!

I've been reading the forum for a few weeks now and I have seen several posts where people talk about using Velcro to stick the grabber to their crutches.  Will be giving this a go myself.

Good luck.

Paula

Hi Linnet,

Thanks for that. I had thought about having a spare for upstairs so if you could message me the details that would be great. Thanks. I'm seeing my physio soon so might also see if they can let me have one more.  Good luck for your other hip too, I hope my next one goes as well as this one has.

nice to hear from you.

Hi Paula,

Thanks for that. I hadn't thought of Velcro.

Wishing you all the best for your op. I have to say the reality of mine hasn't been as bad as the fear and I wish the same for you.

Hi Ali!

It's good to hear you're coming along. I'm having my right hip done April 2nd. I read on one of the discussions that somebody used velco to attach their grabber to their walker so you might try that with your crutches.

Thanks Miele,

My hubby now has some Velcro on his shopping list! It looks like it might come in useful for a variety of things, now that I've given it some thought

hi alison .my name is joan .so glad your over your op .i go in on thursday the 12th for my op on friday .i think its really helpful reading all letters .could you tell me what you wore when they got you out of bed  and how you managed .

regards joan

Hi Ali,

I know what you mean with the grabber, it drove me nuts & in the end I tied a piece of string around the crutch & grabber together. Not the best idea I am sure but It has certainly helped me.

Good Luck

Hi Ali

Anoher oe for the North East of England saying hello

I've had both mine done  As for the grabber....I got a 2nd  one in a car boot sale

You can buy basic ones {{not expensive}

Hi Joan

i took in pyjamas but didn't fell like wearing them the first day post op so I was stuck wearing the dreaded hospital gown trying to make sure I don't show the world a delightful rear view! Several of the other women on the ward took in nice cotton nighties, easy to put on and a more dignified rear view! I am definitely going to get a couple when I go in for my second one.

Hope the operation goes well on Friday let us know how you are getting on.

Hi Joan,

Firstly I would say try not to worry. I've had quite a bit of surgery in my life and I'm generally not fazed by it but for some reason I was terrified of this one and almost backed out! Maybe it was the fact I wasn't going to be having a general anaesthetic, who knows. I know now though than the reality of it all has been far better than my fears led me to believe.

I went to surgery in one of their gowns and stayed in it until the next morning when the spinal block they gave me had worn off. The nurse came round that morning and helped give me a bed bath then it was on with my own pj's. I had a catheter in that was taken out the day after the surgery along with the 2 drains I had in the wound. Once they were all out and my wounds redressed and in my own pj's I felt much better. They got me out of bed and tried me with a walker which I found manageable and after that started taking myself to the loo, watched by a nurse as my blood pressure kept dropping and I had light headed spells. Once my BP sorted itself out I was fine. I progressed to crutches the 3rd day after surgery and once I had shown them I could manage the stairs I was allowed home.

My main problems now are sleeping and boredom. After working full time and being very busy, I am finding this sitting about malarkey a real shock to the system but I will do as I am told, although I can't wait to drive again!

I wish you all the best for your surgery. I'm sure it will be just fine.

Hi Karen,

I had thought of maybe tying a piece of string round and putting it round my shoulder. We shall see

Hi Eileen,

So nice to hear from you. I've been reading these forums since I came home after surgery and everyone seemed so nice so thought I would join and hopefully I could help someone with my experiences as others have helped me.

Take care and speak soon.

Hi Ali,

I am 8 weeks post op THR and doing pretty good.  You were asking about the grabber and i had to laugh a bit because the first day i was home, it dropped and noone was around, and i was like, "i need a grabber for my grabber".  I started to cry then laugh.  so, from that day forward, i put a large rope on it and tied it around my neck.  it never fell again.  Welcome to the forum.  Ginny USA NJ

I like your thinking ginny. I might do something like that myself. I did the same, dropped my grabber and thought, "wish I had a grabber" lol.

thanks for the nice welcome

Hi Ali

At 9 days post op myself nice to meet you and glad you are progressing.

My grabber may not be the same as yours but- it has a couple of clips which clip firmly and directly into the crutch

And thus is easy to carry along. No the design is not brilliant! Try to tighten these maybe?

The best mecicine for me now would be sunderland to get 3 points and beat Aston Villa next weekend!

Hi Mic,

Nice to speak to you. Mine too has a clip which attaches to my crutch but it doesn't take much to knock it off. It's not a strong clip at all!

Oh no! Not red and white! I'm black and white myself and am just happy that our fixture with Man U wasn't the 5-0 drubbing we were all expecting. Onwards and upwards eh?

Instead of using crutches around the house, I borrowed a walker off my mum.,it was so much easier. One with 3 wheels. Turned on a pin, had a pouch so I could stuff everything in there and parked my grabber on it. Very useful and made the first 2 weeks so much easier I can tell you

Hi,

I had my LH replaced 3 weeks ago and yes the other one does need to be done.  I never took my grabber with me but did stop using both crutches and felt that this was much better around the house to just use the one.  Outside was different use 2 then.

I cannot sleep on my back and feel refreshed afterwards up at 5am most mornings so i have stopped worrying.  I listen to my body go for a walk and then get so sleepy I just drop into bed in the afternoon and find I have 2 hours sleep like this in the afternoon.
