Suffering from diabetes for 5 years! HbA1c is getting around 9.5 and under medication. Sometimes I smokes not always. Monthly drink beer on moderate level. I fear lots of damage done. I am around 38 years old. will it impact my life span a lot. Any suggestions? Good to hear from people. I believe I wont make it to 60 but I am nor scared.
Hi Pratik,
Sorry to about your situation. My very first diagnosis 20.27! I was immediately placed on medication and my practically ruined that year. But since then it’s been 12 years and I have bounced back with my life.
Jan 3 this year my fasting test was 7.02 and 2-hour post prandial 12.2%. That tells you how easily my system was pouring glucose into my blood!
But I immediately decided to take my health more serious when I read of how damaging the diabetes has been to my health generally over the years.
All I did was review my eating - without necessarily starving.
I changed to fibre and protein for breakfast (savoury breakfast) and protein again (mostly fish or just soup and fish/meat) for dinner. Lunch, I usually eat my native foods (mostly carbs) but with moderation.
The result has been amazing: holding steady around 5 HbA1c for months now and without any medications again.
I shared my story to encourage you that you have no reason to think of death when all you need is a lifestyle change and you’ll be fine. Plus talk to your doctor of course.
All the best.
Hey Pratik, I hear you. It’s scary thinking about the future, but there’s definitely hope.
There are so many ways to manage blood sugar nowadays, from new meds to CGMs that help you track things in real time and manage your diet base on the database gathered by the sensor. Even small changes like cutting back on smoking can help a lot.
Don’t give up, you’ve got time to turn this around. And if you ever try a CGM like Libre, put on a patch to keep your sensor secure. Hang in there — you’re not alone in this!
Stop smoking and drinking. I did these things and am paying dearly for it. You are Diabetic, type-1? Either way, Diabetes is proof your genetic code is unstable and prone to mutations (mutations are most always bad). An A1C of 9.5 is out of this world. I’ve been Diabetic for over 40 years and mine has always been in the low 5’s. You need to get it to at least the mid 6’s. You’ll regret it once you start getting nerve pain and other things. I regret all of the self damaging things I’ve done to myself because I’m eating it now. You’ll never not regret it. Beer and smoking is trash and why you have Diabetes in the first place. If your ancestor from 500 years ago smoked or drank beer/liquor/wine, they are why you have this now. It poisons your genetic pool forever and more. The net doesn’t always catch everyone; but, it will catch your family tree down the line. My grandfather from the USSR was an alcoholic and I paid for it because I was born with Diabetes type-1. I was cocky because I was in great health, shape, and had great physical gifts (even though I was Diabetic my entire life). I started drinking/smoking and doing other things when I turned 19 and now I’m a withered mess. So much of a mess you can look at my post history to see that my giant problem cannot even be detected, or acknowledged by doctors I’ve been seeing for the past five years. How will I get help if they won’t even find out what it is? I used to think doctors could save people, now I got a reality check. You will too if you continue on your line of living. You’ll regret it, nobody regrets it until you get pinned down by it.
Great! Thanks You!
Thanks Irene!
What has been done you should not think about it. What you can do think about that. Stress and overthink will kill all of us. I have zero regret of what I did and what my forefathers did. I saw many super healthy person died in covid. Some person I knew never used to travel vehicle because most of people die daily in road accident. 50 yaers old person harldy move out of his home but Covid Kill that person. Life is beautiful but hard time will come for sure. I want to enjoy life be it short but a worthy one! All the Best!
I will stop Smoking and Drinking for sure! I am type 2!
