Overweight and awaiting THR

Bad I know but I'm quite overweight by some 3 stones and worried the effect it may have on THR surgery? Has anyone had this surgery whilst carrying extra weight. I can't walk much or exercise as I used to due to severe groin hip and back pain and food is such a great comfort to me right now. Thanks all.

Yes, I'm overweight for my surgery, but post op you get on with it and prove that you are good. You will find that groin pain eased once hip is done .

The surgeon told me it would help him if I lost a bit of weight!

I've been overweight for all of my surgeries, after my first revision I lost 3 stone because I wanted to make sure I gave my new hip the best possible chance but 18 months later it came loose. If they thought your weight was too much of an issue then they wouldn't do the surgery.

Hi Louise I was three stone overweight before have been for years really exercise was getting more painful tbh even the chore of swimming and drying afterwards and putting on socks and shoes alone impossible but was still working part time as a midwife on a very busy labour ward. Had the op in May and walking a lot better now most I've done is 11km on an evening in London! although still aches after a while my back is bad and hasn't really been helped by op. Big issue is life of the hip now it wears out quicker if overweight and you may face other problems with other joints in the future with OA so try to be good now I joined a slimming group before and lost 10-11 pounds still a way to go put it on again in the summer when kids were off and I was more mobile again! Just doing my fitness pal an app on my phone now and that's good for making healthy choices. If you shop on line the first few weeks post op and not get junk you won't be able to go out far to get treats so try that also then seemed to just have my three meals a day and lost some weight. This is my journey and no one else can travel it and I'm the only one who can give my recovery a helping hand by losing the extra weight.psychological support is great but only you can walk in your shoes! Seeing the consultant in November is also a motivation to do it as I know he will say it to me going forward. So start today or tomorrow morning! Don't think it slowed my recovery much although a colleague at work same age as me was back at 10 weeks it's taken me 15 back tomorrow but routine will be good and looking forward to it. Good luck

I was 60 lbs overweight 5'5" but it was well porportioned except my belly she doesnt want to follow the rules I think she is holding out lol. It had no impact on my surgery . But I was physically active due to my job before the surgery and now of course Im sure to knock off the weight will be a plus. My next Challange.

Really appreciate such honesty. God bless you and good luck for the future. 😉

Such a heart warming story. Sounds as though u r making amazing progress. Yes take on board all you say. In fact you have given me a lift psychologically to get myself fitter before the op. wishing you all the very best. Louise

Hi

That's such a comfort to know. I feel embarrassed knowing others will have the displeasure of seeing my wobbly bits. I'm sure as you say they would let me know. After yr hip came loose did u have it successfully fixed?

Hi Louise,

Im no lightweight and easily carrying an extra 3 stone or more but it hasn't had any effect on my recovery I don't think. I seem to be recovering at the same rate as other hippies on here who aren't carrying extra weight. It's so easy to put the weight on due to inactivity because of pain.

It'll certainly not do you any harm to get yourself in better shape before the surgery but I don't think it will hold you back in your recovery if you don't manage it.

Take care.

Ali xx

Hi Louise

i too am overweight but my surgeon did not mention it and my op went ahead with no probs and I am 4 weeks and doing well so do not worry .

the op wouldn't happen if the surgeon wasn't happy !

have you got a date ????

Touch wood - yes things are currently going well. It has been a very very long road to recovery, 2 yrs on and I'm still having physio and still overweight!

Diet always starts tomorrow - good luck!

Ali phew that's a relief. I've heard many cases like ours and everyone says it won't make a huge difference. Wishing you all the very best. X

Jay that's a great comfort. Others have said the same. Phew I was worried. My next appt is in 5 weeks when I expect a date will be set. Thanks for yr info and wishing you all the very best.

Really wish you well Tech. I know it won't all be plain sailing but has to be done to get some of my life back. I'm so incapacitated currently. Hope all goes well for you and wish I didnt have this almost lifelong weight issue :-(

Keep us posted as to  your date and we are here to support you x

Many thanks. I will do. So nice to know there is the support of others and I'm not alone.X

It is possible to be referred by your surgery to slimming world. This means 12 weeks free membership and if you loose 5% of your body woeght in that time another 12 weeks free membership. Your BMI has to be above a certain level, do not know what. My daughter did it very successfully

Thanks Maggie. I have a plan that 6 weeks prior to surgery I will go on a diet. I've recently lost 2.3 stones but its creeping back on again. When I have to do it for a reason I'm fine. Think it's psychological. Wishing you all the best.

How much weight is a stone?  I could use a 25lb reduction....He told me to get as fit ss possible, never said lose weight.
