Hi, so I've basically been housebound since the end of February. I'm 33 and have a two so not ideal. My replacement went great and I was getting on with my life until the end of Feb. Horrendous pain in my buttock and also slight pain at the front of the hip and into the groin. I went into hospital and had a scan which showed my iliopsoas tendon was rubbing on my new hip. So I see the surgeon (who doesn't want to touch me as I've had 5 hip surgeries prior to the THR). I went to the pain clinic today and the diagnosed me with SI joint pain and inflammation. I'm to have the joint injected soon but I still think it's my iliopsoas tendon. Anyone with similar problems? I'm in so much pain!
So sorry for your severe pain! After my THR I also had buttock pain, and was not able to balance alone on the surgical leg for even a second, as far as 6 months after operation, and had a bad limp. For some reason they suspected SI problems, and I had the SI joint injection. It did not relieve my pain at all. If your pain is relieved with the injection that is indicative of SI joint problem.
After I had a MARS MRI of my hip, it turned out that two of my gluteal tendons were torn, explaining my buttock pain and inability to stand alone on that leg, and the severe limp. I ended up with surgery to repair the torn gluteus medius and minimus tendons.
I hope that you get a correct diagnosis and effective treatment plan. I had to go to a second orthopedic surgeon in a different practice from my original surgeon (OS) to get that for myself. My OS kept insisting that I had muscle weakness and just needed more PT and cortisone injections. He was completely wrong.
This is the awful thing about this recovery is putting your faith in your surgeon only to discover they are wrong, it doesn't effect their everyday lives it's ours(yours) so glad you got a second opinion that's the hardest thing to do. I truly believe we need to be more assertive when it comes to our choices for treatment and care. We'll done you!
How true, Penny! I am so glad that I have excellent health insurance that allows me to easily go for second opinions. I have gotten more and more assertive as I have gotten older. In this case, I could hardly walk and had so much pain that it felt very natural for me to keep pressing for answers.
I had the same problem for 4 years. My surgeon took an X-ray and my bnehad retracted and my iliopsoas was rubbing on the metal socket. My dr decided to do surgery to release the tendon muscle and I’m so glad he did. I’m pain free and happy. Please try to have it done you’ll see the difference.
Oh miriamal49 I'm going to see my surgeon tomorrow but I just know that he's going to say that he isn't going to do anything especially now that the pain specialist has diagnosed me with this SI joint thing. I really do believe it's my iliopsoas tendon that's to blame from doing lots of online research and reading people's stories on forums like his one. Unfortunately I live in Jersey (Channel Islands) and this surgeon is the top guy in Jersey. I'm going to have to step on his toes to ask him for a second opinion (preferably Birmingham). Thanks for your reply, could you describe how your pain was and what it stopped you from doing, please.
Unfortunately, I haven't asked for a second opinion yet, hopefully doing it tomorrow....
