Pain after Cystoscopy

Hello, my Urologist performed a Cystoscopy on me Monday. I have the worst pain when I urinate, it is awful. I am seeing a tiny bit of blood. Thought many of you have been through this and wondered what I can do for the pain? Have been taking Ibuprofen without much help. Had a previous one in 2016 and do not think it was this bad. Thanks

not much you can do. I took antibiotics. It goes away in a week time.

After prostate surgery I had a burning sensation when urinating and found URAL powder, mixed with water to be a GREAT relief. It alkalanises the urine which in my case (and maybe yours) was/is very acidic.

5 mins after taking the powder I peed with no burning sensation.

Try it!

Bill,

Exactly the same thing happened to me a couple of years ago. Went to the lab and gave a urine sample - had a UTI. Had to take antibiotics to clear it up. DON'T take Cipro. Also had some blood from the scope pushing into the bladder. Very common. Antibiotics began to work after four hours.

Hi everyone
same thing happened to me after a cystoscopy a few years ago Go back and see Dr. Get started on antibiotics as soon as you can. I think this is a fairly common event following this procedure. i know they give you a couple of antibiotics to take after the procedure but they just are sometimes not effective against the bacteria present in your system and after stirring things up with the scope an infection arises. Good luck Tom C

Bill,

Get your urine checked for bacteria as soon as possible. If it is after your doctors hours, go to an Urgent care. If it gets too bad you may have to go to an emergency room. If they find bacteria they should assign an antibiotic, then do a culture and find the preferred AB for that bacteria, within a couple days. Sometimes a urinary infection can get out of control quickly. If you develop a temperature you may need to get an antibiotic as soon as possible because it will only get worse. Sometimes doctors automatically prescribe an antibiotic after a cystoscopy, assuming there is a good chance there will be an infection.

Tom, thanks for the advice. I am stronger now, not so unsteady and eating again. They did call in an antibiotic and another drug to help me urinate . I am not in the excruciating pain I was in my trips the bathroom.

And what they gave me was Ciprofloxacin. So I wondered why you said not that? I am allergic to Doxycycline, after it literally inflamed the gland of my penis.

They wanted me to come in for a urine test before they prescribed something but I was not in any shape to go out. I will have one done the first of the week. Thanks

Hi Bill i think someone else made the comment about cipro. If it is working and you're only on it for a short time say a week I wouldn't worry about it. Long term cipro might be worth a discussion with Dr. Reason is reports of tendinitis especially achilles tendon. I think other tendons can sometimes be affected too. I personally was on cipro a few years ago 3-5 weeks over the course of a year and I developed shoulder issues. Tendinitis or bursitis. I had my suspicions that it was from cipro but couldn't say for sure. It finally just went away but took a long time- a year. Never had shoulder problems before. Its been fine for last year as well .

Hello, certainly appreciate all the replies. I am taking Cipro, but will ask the doctor to switch it out if my upcoming Urine test shows that I need something additional. Is there another anti biotic that is not in the Doxycycline family.

I'm feeling better, but still have very uncomfortable urination. Hoping that the drug they gave me to open me up a bit.

Have never had a UTI in my life of 70 years I have never had one, so I don't think it is an infection, but rather something related to the procedure. Perhaps the lubricant used or the numbing medication he injected into the penis.

We shall see.

Bill,

Cipro is THE most dangerous antibiotic there is. Research this on the internet. Bayer issued a strongly worded warning to doctors a few years ago and called it the antibiotic of "last resort". I took it two years ago and got a reaction - lack of energy, raised my blood pressure 20 points, and was just "off" for a year and a half. I did recover but some never do. There are threads here about this.

yes there are other antibiotics that work for UTIs . Amoxicillin, Augmentin which is broad spectrum Amoxicillin several types of cephalosporins also work and there are others. These are not related to Doxycycline. Doxy is in the tetracycline family. Good luck. UTI can really be rough and painful!
