I had EGD yesterday with sedation. Felt pretty much fine yesterday, minus a little chest discomfort when breathing in deep. Today I've had no appetite and have discomfort swallowing, and a persistent discomfort in my chest. Waiting for call back from doctor. In meantime, reading about perforation and wondering if this sounds serious. I don't want to go to ER for a bunch more tests if this is normal. Does anyone have any experience with pain like this following endoscopy? Thanks very much.
Hi Penny, doesn't sound remotely like perforation to me. (I'm a former nurse btw.) Perforation would cause sudden unbearable pain, and you'd collapse in shock.
All kinds of reasons why this could be going on. I'd say you can afford to wait for your doctor to call back unless there's any serious deterioration.
Hi Penny
i hope you've had the call and has put your mind at rest. It doesn't sound like a perforation I don't think. More likely the after effects from the scope the procedure itself, the air that is blown inside to aid viewing and maybe biopsies. It should settle over the next few days. It can be quite traumatic for some people and that obviously has an impact on how you feel afterwards. Rest and recover and hope all is well.
Thank you very much for your quick reply. Your response definitely helps ease my mind a bit!!
Thanks so much. Really appreciate your response!!
My throat was was very sore two days after my EGD so I think that is normal but not sure about chest pain. If it doesn't go away I'd call your doctor
Sorry to ask but I have same thing as you after endoscopy day before yesterday. Did your pain go or did you see your doctor or have to go to A & E. I'm really scared it's caused something and I don't know what it could be. I'm calling my doctor tomorrow though.
Hi, sorry you're having pain. Mine did go away fortunately, it basically faded slowly over that next day or so, and everything has been normal since. I did call the GI doctor and when he eventually called back he didn't seem to understand what kind of pain I was talking about- but he didn't think it sounded serious and by the time he called back I think the feeling had stopped. Good luck!
Hi penny! i am hoping you will see this as i am having similar discomfort. I had an upper endoscopy, and right after i was fine and had a smoothie, however, i went and had lunch where i ate bread and i think that was a really bad idea...because from then on (its been 2 full days) i have had a strange discomfort in my chest behind my sternum, especially when i breathe in deeply. when i swallow i have the hardest time getting it down so i am discouraged to even eat. even swallowing water hurts...it feels almost as if I have taken a large pill and it is stuck (even though i havent). i cant tell if its gotten better since the procedure because i havent eaten much. is this similar to whar you felt?
Hi Jackie! Sorry you're dealing with that I actually had to go back and read my initial post because I'm starting to forget how exactly it felt after my endoscopy. I do remember how it hurt when I breathed in deep, and the general discomfort in my chest afterward, and it was very frustrating that the doctor and nurse I talked to acted like it is so uncommon to feel any pain at all afterward (whereas it seems like a lot of people have discomfort afterward). The only reassuring thing I found (and that would seem to apply in your situation too) is that the signs of a serious problem are apparently much more severe. My discomfort cleared up within a couple of days. I get the impression, from reading about this, that pain after endoscopy is a lot more common than doctors think? But I'd say to definitely call your doctor if you're concerned. Good luck and hope you feel better soon!
I had and an endoscopy done a couple months ago because I was getting food stuck when swallowing. Immediately after I had a very sore throat, difficulty swallowing, which was expected and chest discomfort. I had a few things going on, Including a Schatzki's Ring which he opened. It has been a couple months now and I still have chest discomfort. During my follow up, the doctor said what I am feeling has nothing to do with what he did, and to check with the cardiologist. I am under a cardiologist care now going through lots of tests, ruling out the heart and gallbladder.
Has anybody experience this chest discomfort this long after your endoscopy and what was the cause?
Thank you in advance for whatever experience and advice you could give me.
Hi jackie
I had an upper endoscopy with some biopsies yesterday. I am feeling similar chest pain/ indigestion like symptoms as what you describe. It also feels like somthing I stuck in my chest when I swallow or eat.
Just need some reassurance that this could just be air trapped in the tummy or chest? Or if anyone else can shed some light.
Thanks so much!
Please tell me this for better for you. I just had my endoscopy yesterday and I'm having the exact symptoms. The doctor didn't seem concerned.
I'm so glad I found this discussion as I am having the same problem! Had an endoscopy 2 days ago where they took some biopsies and also the doc said he stretched the esophagus a little. (I was still groggy from the anesthesia and didn't ask him if it actually needed to be stretched!) Anyhow, I had an endoscopy 10 years ago with zero after effects. But this time when I eat anything, as it reaches the point around the sternum, it feels like glass is going down - just sore and irritated. I did call the doc who said "Gee, I never heard of that, doesn't sound serious." Sheesh! From reading this thread, sounds like some other people have had this same thing which helps put my mind at ease a little. The reason for the endoscopy was I was having mild swallowing problems, where food was getting stuck in my throat, but I could get it down with additional swallows or some liquid. Now it seems I've traded a mild problem for something worse! At least I didn't have any pain before.
Since others are still reading this post I'm going to comment. I too had an upper and lower gi 10 yrs ago with no side effects other than some embarrassing gas from the lower, and very mild throat soreness.
Day before yesterday I had a piece of pork stuck in my esophagus, I waited about 16 hours to go to the ER because it was a Saturday night and I didn't want to go in with all the crazies. Actually I was hoping ping it would pass on it own. From what the GI pics show it was stopped and inch or so above my stomach, though from the pain I had and the tiny bit of water I could swallow it felt like it was right below the Adams apple area. The first 12 hours post procedure are a complete blur. I barely had a sore throat 24hrs later, but kept my food to oatmeal, cream of wheat, etc. Now at 48 hrs and my entire esophagus is as sore as my throat after eating a meal of mashed Sheppard's pie, not spicy at all. I've come to understand thru the years that doctors DONT hear this complaint very often because it is generally stopped at the nurses desk because it it NOT "serious". But this is genuine pain, and if I had not expected discomfort I would be worried. I wonder what the difference is in 10 years ago and 2 days ago... Is it the physician or the patient? Was my regular doctor more gentle? Or am I now more fragile.
I just found this thread from a google search about pain after endoscopy! I had one about five years ago and don’t remember having any kind of discomfort afterwards. I just had another today and coming out of anesthesia I immediately told the nurse and then my doctor about pain in my chest - it feels kind of like heartburn except not as acidy, because I hadn’t eaten anything in 12 hours. She told me it might be reflux which was confusing, because I’ve never had reflux that comes on this long after eating and the pain came on following the procedure. she told me to go home and work on an anti-reflux diet. ??? I had some pasta, which I think helped a little, but the pain is still there. Like another said, it’s behind my sternum and this thread has calmed me out of thinking it was a serious complication and instead I’m hoping it’s just some air that got stuck.
Did this get any better for you? I had an endoscopy yesterday my very first one and they never said anything about pain. I’m having pain whenever I eat or drink its bearable but it’s annoying. Hopefully you’ll see this. I’m just really worried at this point. I’m being told it’s nothing to worry about, but I am and mostly when this was not discussed as a side effect before or after the procedure. Thank you!
Hi Jessica! Yes it did. It resolved within a few days. Just drink lots of smoothies, broth, and water seriously I was so stressed about it and then I woke up a few days later and it was gone. Don’t be worried!!!
Omg! Thanks for replying lol I’ve been so worried. I’m glad you feel better. I can’t wait until I can eat normally again. Thanks again!
I had the endoscopy yesterday and biopsy as well, tissue were taken from three places. I was normal just after 30 minutes. But after 4-5 hours I started feeling little discomfort in my chest, feeling like someone put cold water in my chest (Food pipe). I called my Dr today, he said nothing happen after Endoscopy. Even I forgot to remind him that my endoscopy involved biopsy as well. Anyway.
I was little panicked having discomfort in my chest after endoscopy and added salt to it after talking to my doctor. Now after reading this discussion I am feeling comfortable though I am visiting my doctor today.
