Hi. I have broken 2 bones in my left ankle and am due to have surgery to inserts a couple of plates next week. At the moment I am wearing a very heavy immobilising cast to allow the swelling to go down. I keep the leg elevated all of the time except when I need to use the bathroom. I have a walking frame and crutches to get around on but find they cause a lot of pain in my hands resulting in bruises. Any advice would be gratefully received. Thanking you in advance.
I found the knee scooter to be absolutely a godsend. You will likely have 6-10 weeks non weight bearing so buying one might be cheaper than renting. Others have said they have seen them on ebay and amazon. Best wishes for your surgery and recovery.
Your local medical supply should sell Velcro pads for crutches or u can buy them on line. If not u can use household sponges or padded gloves..
So sorry u already have bruises, they will hopefully heal fast once u get some padding for your hands.

I just got a wheel chair and it is a great break from the walker - which I find exhausting. My inusurance company issued it but from what I saw on the internet it looks like Amazon carries the same thing.
I have been of my feet for two weeks now and this group has been very helpful. Hang in there!
Tout d'abord, je suis vraiment désolé que vous traversiez cela. Je suis juste un mois ou deux devant vous et c'est difficile, mais vous allez vous en sortir. Ces forums sont excellents pour obtenir des conseils et de l'empathie, alors utilisez-les lorsque vous en avez besoin. Tout le monde ici sait ce que vous traversez. Je vais appuyer l'idée du déambulateur à genou. Il a été très utile. Vous constaterez que votre pied gonflera un peu lorsque vous serez dessus en raison de la position de votre pied. Mis à part cela, il n'y a aucune douleur ou inconfort lors de l'utilisation du déambulateur, sauf si vous essayez de parcourir une longue distance ou si vous restez dessus trop longtemps. J'ai même un panier sur le mien. Je suis si maladroit et je dois régulièrement éviter les jouets de deux petits enfants, mais je me sens vraiment en sécurité sur le déambulateur. Si vous achetez, soyez attentif au poids. Vous voudrez quelque chose de solide, mais aussi léger et ils varient un peu. Bonne chance pour votre chirurgie. Une fois que vous l'aurez passée, ce sera une amélioration, même si une amélioration quelque peu lente au début.
I agree the knee walker is your best bet. I purchased one on ebay for 135. It stated it was used, but it looks brand new. I'm having total ankle replacement in two weeks. I didn't want to rent.
Sorry to hear you have joined our group... it is a long process back to semi normal. At the point where you are a bought a transport chair.. like a wheelchair but has 4 small wheels. It was a God send until I moved on to crutches. I am just now over the callouses I got on my hands and Yes.. it hurts. I cut the tops off of my husbands tube socks and put the tops of the socks on the hand pieces of the crutches. You just unscew where you would adjust the hands up and down and put back on. That really helped a bunch when my hands were hurting so much. Plus you already have it in your house and you can wash them. I didn't get a knee scooter but many folks on here loved them. In the meantime get a good book. I hope you heal well. This is an excellent place with a lot of very good people. It is nice to know that you are not alone in this journey.
I bought my scooter used from a medical supply. Mine has two wheels in front & two in back with two hand brakes which one can squeeze to slow down & push down to lock the brakes. It is very stable. Also having a faux lamb cover gives additional padding for the knee, definitely a plus.

Les trotteurs ont fait des miracles pour moi. J'en ai un depuis quelques jours après ma fibula fracturée il y a plus de 10 mois.
Très pratique. Un peu inconfortable au début. Je suis tombé des béquilles beaucoup trop de fois.

Bonjour, j'ai eu le même plâtre pendant trois jours, j'ai fini par emprunter un fauteuil roulant pour les trajets aux toilettes et j'ai une canne à trois branches que j'utilise pour glisser du fauteuil roulant aux toilettes. 5 semaines plus tard, je l'utilise encore beaucoup, cela soulage mes épaules de la douleur. J'ai un déambulateur à genouillère, mais c'était très douloureux avec le plâtre. Cela s'améliore, je suis maintenant juste dans la botte sans appui (NWB) mais la douleur est minime et je n'ai besoin de motrin que la plupart du temps la nuit. Bonne chance

I had a smaller wheelchair (I mention smaller because it made it easier to get through doorways). I used the crutches gradually and by the end I got strong enough, but I still found that with the wheelchair I could carry things. I also bought a knee scooter, but I found it unstable and was afraid to use it outside (they are made for flat ground, no big cracks and I couldn't carry anything) however they are a big hit for many. I ended up returning mine. I also bought a walker and used it only in the house. I also had a bedside commode which was a big help. And did I mention a shower chair. Just remember it's temporary.

Je ressens ta douleur ! Je suis sur le point de devenir folle. Je suis tombée dans quatre marches il y a une semaine aujourd'hui et je me suis cassé LES DEUX pieds. Je suis dans deux bottes et je saurai la semaine prochaine si j'ai besoin d'une opération sur le pied gauche. J'ai un déambulateur qui est si difficile à utiliser. Essayez de marcher avec deux pieds cassés 😭. J'utilise toute ma force supérieure du corps pour me lever uniquement pour aller aux toilettes ou du canapé au lit. Mon mari en a déjà assez de m'aider pour tout et de devoir s'occuper de moi. Je suis si déprimée que je ne sais pas comment je vais traverser cela.

Bummer to break both. At some point you just have to laugh so you don't cry. You are not the first. I've seen many photos online of people with dual casts now. Hang in there. This too shall pass! It seems like the big stuff right now, but in the realm of a lifetime, it really is the small stuff. It's good to keep that in mind and try not to go too crazy! We feel your pain! J'ai eu un fauteuil roulant motorisé. J'ai eu du mal avec un péroné fracturé qui ne s'est pas réparé, 5 mois plus tard une greffe osseuse avec plaque et vis. En même temps qu'un kyste de Baker sur l'autre jambe, qui était atroce et je ne pouvais pas plier ou tendre cette jambe, jusqu'à ce qu'il éclate il y a 6 semaines. Plus d'atrocités, je suis tombée, j'ai contusionné ma jambe cassée (maintenant 5 mois depuis l'opération), le kyste éclaté, et j'ai déchiré un muscle dans la jambe du kyste de Baker. Je ressens votre douleur, mais vous l'avez pire.
Trouvez un bon fauteuil roulant. De nouvelles passions. Vous avez rejoint le club que vous n'avez jamais demandé à rejoindre deux fois. Double application.
Quand j'ai cassé le mien, une dame au cours de natation de mon enfant a été impolie, et a dit que c'était dur que j'aie cassé ma jambe, mais tant pis. Pas de remboursement comme ils le font habituellement.
La karma l'a eue. Double fracture. 9 mois plus tard, elle est de retour à l'hôpital.
Et je marche.
Elle a une attitude lamentable. Vous avez une attitude fantastique. Vous êtes ici pour commencer.

Attendez de savoir si vous avez besoin d'une chirurgie, puis planifiez votre parcours avec un spécialiste, un physiothérapeute et votre famille.
Assurez-vous que vos médicaments contre la douleur sont corrects.
Mon mari est devenu compatissant UNIQUEMENT parce qu'il s'est fracturé le scaphoïde 3 semaines après moi, et il a également eu besoin d'une chirurgie. Nous n'étions même pas une personne complète entre nous.

I understand completely. I am 4 weeks out w/ the same injury of my right ankle. I use the crutches occasionally but most often a walker. My hands had bruises on them after the first week- my husband has put pipe insulation around the handles and secured it with gorilla tape. I tried gloves for a day or 2 also- but this has helped. They are still sore, but not painful. I have kind of a funny story... but 4 days after we got home from surgery- I had GI issues in the middle of the night. I had to get up 5 times.... and the next morning my hands were killing me. It was all I could do to get to the bathroom... that was when we tried gloves. you can also tape towels around the handles.
I have a scooter too now- thought that would be easy, but i got a sore on my knee after just using it for 2 hours... . they have put a padding UNDER my cast and we have added a sheepskin cover w/ additional padding under it. It is easier on my knee- but i have to admit- none of this is easy. But... it does get easier from where you are now so hang in there.
regarding scooters- do not buy a free spirit scooter - it is awful. Do some research on them- there are various features and definately Amazon is the way to go.. Our insurance was willing to cover (had a letter of medical necessity) but we borrowed one and it is definately only for inside use. I would love to go out for a walk, but we live on a hill and the road is very hard on the tires. We replaced the back ones but it has not made it any easier for outside. Sigh.... 8 more weeks :-)

I have learned that people say the stupidest things for sure- i was getting irritated with them, but am learning that they all mean well for sure.

I have all the same things- oh and the leg cast condom is a lifesaver too!!!- we got CURAD brand- inexpensive and work very well. The shower chair is a must! We were able to return the bedside commode (borrowed it) as I learned to pull the walker to the sides of the commode and use it for leverage to get back up. So.... things are slowly getting easier then they were. I agree about the scooter but you are right- many folks love it. I believe part of my 'dislike' is the brand- again we borrowed it adn i appreciate all of our friends for being so helpful for sure!
