Pain in foot/ankle

Evening,

Has anyone had more pain from their swollen ankle and foot rather than from their hip and scar area. I've had this the last 4 days especially at night once I'm ready to sit and relax.

Brenda

I used to wake up in agony in the back of my heel in the night from obviously having to lie on my back all night, started puttibg a soft blanket under my feet which helped.

I also had a lot of pain in my left ankle but i think that was from the TED stockings. It goes away eventually though

Hello Brenda, I also have more pain from the lower leg, and down into my foot. Its not too bad in the morning, but as the day wears on, and the swelling gets worse, it makes walking very difficult. I believe this is quite normal, according to other posts that i have read. wishing you all the best. xxxx

Thanks Sarah, I'm using a pillow under my foot & my painkillers. Xx

Thanks Julia, I'm the same in the morning. Just have to give it time. It's very frustrating when you want to get up and do stuff but can't. Xx

I have lots of pain in my knee and my thigh kills every morning.

I had heel pain due to sleeping on my back and I used one of the techniques a nurse offered in hospital.  Using one of the hospital gloves they use all the time, fill it with water and then tie it up and then pop it under the heel and it cools and helps a huge amount.  I was bothered it would burst open but it hasn't and is quite robust and helped to ease the pain.

Thanks for your reply. Seems we can get pain anywhere. I even have it in my toe. Hope you're well soon xx

Thanks Amanda, I'll see can i get some of them gloves xx

It was quite funny because it worked so well in the hospital I had the other patients taking the gloves for me from the boxes on the walls on the ward so I had something for home.  We were all looking out for each other.

So sorry to hear this Brenda. Are you taking an anti inflammation tablet? I am in my 7th week and still have soreness but have never had any swelling. The surgeon would not renew my prescription but my GP did! I take Arcoxia and it does affect your stomach like some of them. It has definitely helped. Keep your feet up and rest a lot. Do gentle exercises.

Great idea! If you are wearing an elastic stocking and you get that burning feeling in your heal it is due to a build up of fluid, especially during the night. My foot used to kill me during the night. The GP explained how the body works so differently during the night when you are sleeping. Apparently it does the repair work when you sleep. I hate going to bed as I feel the aches in my hip then but not so much during the day.

Hi Brenda,

How are you feeling today?

It is funny where little or big pains start to show up in your body once you start moving more - you might do more and at times overdo it a little bit - whicjh is Okay, but your body lets you know to slow down - Proper walking is also something new, I found - it felt every unnatural to me, you know, to keep my posture straight, lift my feet  and step heel to toe etc - everyhting started to hurt at some point - knees, ankles, feet and indeed, toes as well - lower back - all those muscles that are trying to keep me balanced - I was (still am) so rigid in my movements, just didn't realize it - also have a lot of stiffness and feel that just stand up and walk is not in the picture yet ---

When do you have your follow up appointment?

elevate your leg and perhaps rest a little more - tough with 2 children, I am sure ..

big warm hug

renee

Michelle, I also felt it in my knee, it is probably due to the fact that we walk a little differently whilst on crutches. I think the poor knee is taking more pressure.

Dear Brenda, I hope you the best, ask your Dr. what Drop foot syndrome is, when I woke right after my THR I could not control the nerves to pull my left foot up to my knee, pushing down was no problem. The right foot worked fine, in the USA we drive (gas, brake etc.) right footed. Anyway, yes both legs are swollen and feel like being dunked in ice water, sometimes it's water retention, mostly it's nerves.  I strongly recommend asking as many Dr.'s reguarding this drop foot syndrome(seems the surgeron severed a nerve, anyone associated with the hospital will not rock the boat so do not trust them. Get a strong independant opinion and have it checked out. I've been suffering with this condition since Jan 7, 2000 most likely the rest of my life. Hope your problem gets better, I'll be praying for you.

Hi Patricia, I think my problem is trying to do too much before I'm ready to and not having rest periods like I was when I was first put of hospital. I'm going to slow down today.

Thanks xx

Hi Renee,

I think I have been doing too much. I am going to slow down later today. I've got dexa scan this morning then appointment with surgeon 20th June. My girls are young adults so they've been helping husband look after me/taking me out. As you say body lets you know when you've done too much.

Thanks Renee xx

Hi Andy.

I think I have been overdoing it really. Also going keep up with my meds ( I tried lowering the painkillers ) I'll see how I go over wk end. Thanks for your reply

Brenda xx

Hi Brenda,

When my leg was swollen my knee, calf, ankle and foot were really pretty sore.  Walking was sore too. Once the swelling went down the pain subsided.  There wasnt much I could do other than to keep it elevated and ice.

I hope it gets better soon,

David.

I had foot pains with the pressure of the duvet on them all the while - an upright cushion between my feet sorted that out, but you can get cradles to keep the weight off your feet.
