Hi all
This is my first post so bear with me. I am 41 I had a left THR March 2013 I also need a right THR. I now require carpel and ulner nerve release before I get my other hip replace. I can't use crutches until I have the other ops. I also suffer from chronic back pain, yep you get it right a total physical wreck. I am on a cocktail of strong painkillers that work most of the time. At the minute when I go to bed I am getting severe pain on the outside of my right knee this is worse than the hip pain. I know I have issues with my knees as well dur to hip problems but this is new. Has anyone else experienced this or does anyone have any ideas what this might be and is it related to my hip.
any suggestions would be great it's going to be 3 months before I see my consultant again.
Thanks all
Hi Eamonn
I am on the waiting list for left thr,for the last few years on going to bed the pain in my left knee wakes me up,this radiates sometimes down to my ankle, this is from what i have been told radiating down from the hip,I find doing some simple excersises and during the day being as mobile as you are able really helps.
It has certainly helped me I wish you the best
Hi sylvia
you nave hit the nail on the head that is the same type of pain I work in a hospital and never get a chance to sit down. Could you give me an idea on the type of excercise that work for you please. I am really hoping that it is not my knee starting to wear out.
Hi Eamonn, when i am woken in the middle of the night,I stretch the leg as hard as i can and then keep my legs striaght and point the toes down wards and then back towards me (6x3) times, this usually does the trick,i have also started to do some simple excercises when i wake and before going to bed, this apparently strenghthens the muscles before going into hsp,i do walk as much as possible, maybe a bit slowly, but my g.p very impressed! If you would like me to let you know about the excersises no problem! Take care
IT Band tightness following surgery and loss of thigh muscle has been a huge knee issue for me to the point of the knee held my recovery back. The patella doesn't track right and I got to find out how much my leg muscles were holding my knee together.
IT Band stretches (which is tough after surgery due to restrictions), massage and quad exercises is helping.
Goodluck!
I, too, have a knee situation. I had my right hip done May 2013 and the left March 2014. Recovery of the last one went as expected but last week for the first time, i am experiencing pain in my right knee. I have no idea where it comes from since i've never had knee problems. So you see, you're not alone, at least in the knee area..
I also was LEFT with IT band damage and it's been a nightmare issue....had a lot of work done to try to loosen the tight muscle issue...and it helped, but the soreness and numbness persists there..
On the knee issue I am also left with horrible knee and foot ankle issue....I did have OA enter my knee at 57 or so, but the surgery and LEG LENGTH issue made it all so worse....body all out of alignment....
I wear a 3/4" lift in surgery side shoe...but the damage has been done as I believe I could have used that lift long before I realized the issue.....
All I can say, good thing I'm retired, I did not do this traumatic surgery until age 72 and now I'm 76......good luck with everything....
Hi, I had 2nd thr in Oct 2012. All went well until a year later I started with knee pain on same side. I assumed that it was arthritis but xray showed minimal arthritis. MRI scan showed nothing. Consultant thought it was weak leg and buttock muscles. Was sent to physio and given exercises. Did them religiously through last winter and it improved dramatically. It's not normal as I can't kneel on it. The physio also massaged the muscles around the hip and they were tight and painful. But of course that only happened once and then you're on your own. It would be very nice to be able to afford private physiotherapy but I can't. But now I am getting pain travelling down the leg into the shin and foot. Again the consultant thinks it's muscular. But then again I am just left with it. I don't think it's entirely muscular and what's frightening is that these doctors don't seem to be very interested or knowledgeable about these problems. I am coming to terms with the fact that I am never going to be able to lead a normal life for a sixty year old woman..Sorry to be so negative but I'm feeling fed up of the way this impinges on my life. I feel that I have no choice but to have the activity level of an old lady.Feeling a bit sorry for myself. I sometimes think that I should have smoked forty a day and downed a bottle of vodka because I couldn't have been in a worse state.
