I've read that 600 mg of pantethine a day assists in the production of natural steroids. It would therefore make sense to me that you could take pantethine and this would then enable you to reduce the amount of Pred taken daily - has anyone tried this? Does it work?

Interesting this study on panthetine.
To replace the steroid, taking less of it for the alternative option I doubt it would be accepted.

I have GCA and I am on Pred there are three years.
Me again - I asked the original question. I would also like to know whether anyone takes Bromelain in any great amount as this is supposed to lower inflammation, and whether this helps with PMR - and more importantly, the ability to lower the amount of Pred taken on a daily basis because of the increase in Bromelain taken - either tablet for or eating lots of pineapples!

I believe the hypothalmic-pituitary-adrenal axis regulates the production of natural cortisol. I suspect pantethine helps the production of cortisol (reduces adrenal fatigue) rather than increasing the amount produced.
The daily pred required to reduce the extraordnary inflammation of pmr is beyond what the adrenals are requred to produce naturally.
I can imagine (but don't know) that when we get down to lower pred doses and expect the adrenals to start producing cortisol again there may be some benefit.
No, I haven't tried it, and probably won't, unless there's compelling evidence my adrenals are not functioning as they should.
Recently I had my Cortisol checked and it is under the Normal range.
I do not have any fatigue just the opposite!
If not for this unfortunate GCA of mine I would be flying instead of just walking.as I use to say .))
I always took for granted my good health and my perfect vision as well .
I had never thought on the possibility of being blind OMG.
I am so grateful and deflect extremely blessed for my vision due the proper treatment, the Pred , diet etc

I stopped taking my health for granted about 1990 when I needed back surgery and a long recovery. Long term chronic ill health is quite different to short term acute stuff. The good news is that there are so many "lifestyle" options which help. I tend to looking after my mental health, diet/weight/exercise though polywhatsit got in the way of the latter for a while, and the way I do things. Supplements tend to be low on my list. Just me, others approach life differently.
The adrenal fatigue I mentioned is more the adrenals being tired of making cortisol, something we wouldn't really notice without tests. Different to the pmr fatigue which we may or may not feel - in my case I felt it big time, it certainly slowed me down big time. Reasonably goo currently but wary of flair as I'm feeling a bit more achy/stiff/fatigued than usual..

Bottom line in all this though - if it helps without harm do it. My only exception is the pred where I accept(ed) a few short term side effects.

As you say we adjust our life style the best we can. Yes, we feel better if we are able to follow the rules and in same time feeling pleasure.
A question: how long was your recovery time after your back surgery? I have a friend going through this ordeal.
Back to our subject. I take B12 ( do you?) every other day, I move, I do not sit for long minutes.
As I can see you are doing it right!
