Hello all i have had my pre op and I asked about if I will be getting an epidural // spinal block to help with pain after the op is done but I don't want it so I have told them I will not be getting it as when I had my youngest child I have had nothing but pain in my back were I had the epidural..
How many of you have had the epidural and is worth thinking about..

In hip replacments the spinal block isnt used as pain relief they use that for during the surgery so you dont feel anything. Many people have the spinal block and are completely awake during the surgery, some opt to be given sedatives.
I dont wish to sound rude but js there not a forum for you specific surgery as i dont think you will get the full amount if help or advice from this particular forum as we are all having/had a full hip replacement it doesnt seem like thats what your having. Therefore restrictions, reckvery and so on will be different xx
I was asked the same question and I basically told the surgeon I wanted to be knocked out with zero chance of waking up or hearing anything. The new knocks me out completely and it felt like I was only out for about five minutes before I woke up and everything was done.

Got to say I wouldn't hesitate to have a spinal again. It was great for me and I remember nothing from the op. I was a bit nervous about it but excited about getting my hip done but was glad to have had the spinal and having no nasty side effects of a general.
I was knocked out for both hips ...I would have refused the spinal tap ....
I had spinal block and sedation and don't remember a thing about it. I would highly recommend it, I felt great after my op. I had my op at 11am and at 12 .30 was having a sandwich and cup of tea.
I was given the option of picking up a girl for my anesthesia. I pretty much told the surgeon to knock me out because I heard that with an epidural you could wake up or even hear what is going on. Wasn't going to risk that!
Today I am 17 days post op and I had my check up. All looks good and my partial weight-bearing was raised to full weight-bearing. Very minimal pain and I'm able to walk without a walker. But I do use the walker as a safety precaution.
Wow! Siri can never get it right. I meant that I was given the option of picking from epidural or general anesthesia. Siri translated what I said into a girl. LOL. Not what I meant! LOL
I had a THR April 2015 with spinal block then a knee replacement May 2016. And once again went with spinal block. That was my 14th surgery and I have had every anesthetic u can think of. The block is amazing and not like an epidural u have when having a baby. Its a single needle. U do not wake up during ots similar to a general as u drift off to sleep and awake in recovery. Difference is NO Pain for 24 hrs. The trick is making sure u r taking oral pain relief as the other wears off or it can be a rough ride.
So blaming it on Sir huh! LOL! It is amazing how badly things get twisted at times.

I went with the spinal block and was given the choice of staying awake or being out for the whole thing. In my opinion there was no decision to make, I didn't want to hear a thing. I did go with the spinal block and felt good when I woke up in recovery. I've had both options for unrelated surgeries and without a doubt, I do much better with the spinal.

Not because we don't care but your case has different challenges -
I don't think anyone here on the forum was offered an epidural for post-op pain relief -
I am so sorry to hear about your bad experience - DO you have to make that decision right now or is it an option later ?

the difference between spinal block and epidural is that the epidural is able to be topped up for use inoperatios that are of an uncertain length like childbirth.
Spinal block is a 'one shot' anaesthetic, and lasts plenty long enough for the surgeon to finish his hip replacement work.
I had Spinal block, with no sedation so I was awake for the whole operation (both times). If you don't want to hear what goes on, go for 'full sedation' and you won't know a thing. Recovery from spinalis easy - i was chatting to the nurses and having a cup of tea just minutes after the operation.

I was expecting to get a spinal/epidural but they couldn't get it to work so ended up with a GA. When I had my first child they struggled to get an epidural to work too. Have to say I felt fab after the op, I was wanting to avoid a GA as I thought I'd feel dreadful after but I really didn't. Best of luck.

I had Spinal and Sedation On Monday. Was very anxious about it and asked for lots of advice on here. Would not hesitate to do it again. Knew nothing and woke up completely clear headed drinking tea and eating toast within an hour. Lady in next room next to me had General and was sick as a dog for 24 hours after. I know that is only two examples but I trusted my Surgeon and aneathetist. I am glad I did. All the very best whatever you decide. X
