Partial hip replacement

Has anyone one on here had a PARTIAL HIP REPLACEMENT because of a fall n fracture with posterior surgery done?
The posts I have read here have been mostly THR n I would like to relate to someone with PHR n recovery journey.

I had a thr 3 years ago and has been brilliant.
Then on the 6th May my 97 year old mother who lives independently, had a fall and suffered a fractured hip and was given a partial hip replacement. She was in our main hospital for a week and then transfered to a small rehabilitation hospital where her progress has been very good. She’s walking with support and hopefully going home next week. Social services have put a programme in place to give her a carer 3 times a day for 2 or 3 weeks. They’re also providing her with a lock safe and life line.
I’ve noticed a difference between how she’s been told to look after her hip and what I was told. I suppose it depends on what part of the hip she’s had replaced. I think it was the stem so she didn’t need to worry about dislocation.

i had a posterior PHR three months ago as a result of slipping on the ice and breaking my hip

Prior to this, i had been very active, exercising nearly every day i expected my recovery to go fast since i was in good shape. however, I am still experiencing a lot of pain . At first, my pain was most intense in my groin. Now that has lessened, and my pain is more in my thigh. While moving around, I sometimes experience a shooting pain in my hip

I haven’t seen my doctor since my two-week checkup, due to the virus I am seeing him in three weeks.i have lots of questions for him:How long should i expect to have pain; should I try to walk–say a mile each day–even though it is very painful to do so; and can i go back to exercise practices, such as yoga and strength building in other words, if it hurts, should I keep doing it? I am a senior and do nothing very impactful, but still?

Hi Nancy. Was your PHR cemented?I’m 66 yrs old n was a very active person. I live alone n did all my chores inside as well as out outside n afraid I won’t be able to carry on as before n exercised.
I’m 4 months post op…I can walk but with a limp so I mostly walk with a cane but I do practice walking without it. When I walk I do get alot of groin pain n stiffness n different sharp pains…Other than from walking n exercising I dont have pain.
My therapist said walk but if you start feeling too much pain to stop.
Are you walking with a cane?
Are you following precautions?

I was told that I no longer have to follow hip precautions, so no on that.

I am not able to walk unassisted, so use a walker or caneYesterday and today, I was on my feet for about two hours each doing weed pulling and rose pruning. Both days left me with a lot of painI’m still taking pain meds .Like you, I have always done all my inside and outside workI Have hired a neighbor boy to help this summer with the mowing and gardens. I’m pretty discouraged .

Was your surgery cemented like mine?
Was surgeon from San Antonio?
What part did you break? Mine was the ball part that goes into the socket.
So I wonder why mine told me my precautions were forever n devastated me!
Do you bend down to put shoes on?
Did you use the reacher to put clothes on n raised potty?
That is very good that you were able to be outside n be on your feet for 2 hrs!
That’s great.
I think you are going to do great!
Please respond soon.

My break was in the femoral neck .The ball and neck and part of the femor was replaced and a large rod was extended down into the femor . I do bend down to put on shoesA large heating pad on the groin and upper thigh helpsSo do hot baths I have had in home PT and am getting moremy health club is closed, and when it opens, I am hoping to get back into yoga and strength building

After being on my feet, i’ve had to only use my walker and can move only quite slowly, so i don’t feel like i am doing well .So, thank you for saying that

I don’t think anything was cemented .i’ll know more when I see mu ortho doc in a few weeks

I live in Michigan and had surgery in Lansingi’ve heard some surgeons do anterior surgery so they don’t have to cut through so much muscle and tendons .That is another discussion I want to have w my doc
My email address is
nancyewilson@sbcglobal.net Can we do this via email?

Nancy I sent you an email but received notice that email was wrong…?

Cecilia, i’m sorry about that . How are you doing?

i am starting to feel somewhat better i can walk some wo a cane or walker. My goal is to be able to walk a mile by the second week in July-my birthday

Nancy

Hi Nancy…great to hear you’re feeling better…You state you are walking with out a cane…do you limp?
I’m still limping n it hurts some.
Can you give me your correct email?

Hi Celcilia, Since you had trouble w my email address, why don’t we start with yours

Today, I am back on the walker or cane full time with a lot of pain And, yes, I do have a pronounced limp

i’m getting pretty tired if this, aren’t you? Nancy

I’m recovering at my son’s house…so I walk around inside…I started walking without my cane 3 days ago.
I just finished walking for 20 minutes n now resting bc it caused pain. I also wonder when I will be back to normal.
Now I’ve been having shortness of breath n worry it might be a PE.
I’m determined to go home next week so this week I’m getting some stuff that will help me be safe at home.
I bought a bath rail…grab bar…a longer reacher…I’m very nervous about going back home n getting everything done myself…ex. taking trash out n hauling trash can out…I’m afraid to fall bc I’m not sturdy enough.
Do you still use a bath chair to get in n out?..n a reacher to dress?

Nancy…also my limping is alittle bit better…I was told to walk heel to toe.

Hi Nancy how are you doing today?
I’m just wondering when pain will go away…June 11 I will be 5 months post op.
Getting nervous because I decided to go back home next Sunday n I live alone.
I’m eager to find out what your Dr. tells you. My appointment is on July.
I wish I had had the anterior approach.

Hi Nancy …just checking in with you.
Have you had your Dr. appointment yet.? Curious to know what he tells you.

HI Cecilia,

I am getting along better . I only use my walker when I get up at night . I can walk some without my cane but do much better with it.

Today I planted a rose and a few perennials. Tomorrow I will plant some annualsI have several gardens: a rose garden (over 70 roses), a shade border, and a mixed border of perennials and annuals.I hire a 15 year old neighbor to help with mowing, digging, etc.

I manage my pain with pain pills, and I take breaks during the day to put heat on my thigh and hip . I think that helps. Tomorrow I am starting mat pilates zoom classes.
I have no idea how I’ll do but at least I am going to try.

I also live alone. i have a best friend, Bob. We live separately, but spend several nights together My daughter flew in from Seattle and spent the first week home from the hospital with meI couldn’t have done it on my own. Bob then spent nights with me for the next six weeks. Again, , I don’t know I could have managed without the help.

My doc appointment is in two weeks.I have questions for him about anterior/posterior surgery and when I can expect the pain to go away. I want another x-ray or even a MRI to see what the tendons look like. Can you think of other questions I might ask?

I think you will also do all right. Do have a neighbor kid who could help out with household tasks? Do you have someone who can pick up groceries for you?

So, to wrap it up about me, I still have pain but am able to manage it better. i am getting around better but I still have to use an assistive device

Thanks for staying in touch If you want to send your email address, it will be easier to stay in touch The word processing software on this site is horrible Nancy

Hi Nancy …Im so glad you’re doing better…Hopefully we can both survive this ordeal…
Do you think it’s safe to post emails on here?
Did you say your surgery was partial posterior? You were able to go down on your knees n bent down?
Do you think it’s safe to post email here?
Do you have FB?

I guess I question posting email addresses also yes, I do have a Facebook account, and messaging would be easier than using this platform you can find me by using my last name Wilson i have been hacked a couple times lately and have had to change passwords and get new credit cards

I can bend down but have lost flexibility I’m adding some yoga poses twice a week

I can get down on my knees and up with some difficulty i was super engaged with yoga, strength building and Pilates before my fall

i did have posterior PHR

My goal is to be able to walk a mile by mid July

how are you doing? What are you able to do? What are your goals?

Hi Nancy…I’ve been walking without a cane for about a week..but limp n pain still…I dont know if I can bend down bc my surgeon told me never to do it!
Still sleeping with pillow between legs…still using raised potty. .n I’m very saddened by this…Recently I started get weird throbbing sensations throughout my leg…mostly mid thigh. My foot swelling on surgery side went down but still feel tightness around foot especially when I flex it…so I’m worried.
I’m going home this Sunday n am worried…since you know I live alone.
I want to be able to do everything I did before. I want my limping to go away.
Are you able to drive / get in car normal? Sit in any chair ?
Can’t remember…did you say you had a fall?
