Patella Displacenent After THR

My kneecap moved out of place 2 weeks after hip replacement surgery. I thought it was a coincidence but now I’m wondering. Has that happened to anyone else? My surgeon suggested physical therapy but I managed to move kneecap back into place myself… after 3 weeks of exercises I learned on YouTube.

YES YES and YES. My left knee right after me left HR has been killing me for four months now. The pain is worse than my hip pain prior to surgery. I have had an MRI, ultrasound, four injections of steroids. I am going back to PT in two weeks. Today I had a lot of pain.

Wow…that is interesting. Did your surgeon admit it had something to do with the surgery…or just a coincidence?

There was pain…mostly in back of knee, where is your pain? Pain has improved but I hate that unstable feeling…like knee is going to go out. And not being able to straighten leg entirely…almost, but not quite.

I am 7 weeks post op. I coukd walk perfectly with no pain at 2 weeks…then this complicated 100% recovery.

you have my sympathy bet that not comfortable

It’s only intolerable when I first wake up…I have to stretch. I can walk almost normally afterward… it’s just very annoying to be conscious of every step so as not to let your knee collapse inward. The situation has improved with specific exercises…I won’t stop until kneecap is back where it belongs.

I never had pain prior to my hip surgery. It started almost right away, but day four post-op I almost landed in the ER for the pain. It is anterior knee pain. It has not subsided. I do have some arthritis in the knee, but never had any issues before my surgery. I think my knee was over manipulated during the surgery by someone to aggressive. I have acute pain and anxiety now and can’t even return to work. My hips are great, had them both done in 2019 10 months apart.

You have my sympathy also Ellen…my misalignment is causing only minor problems compared to yours. But at least you know you aren’t alone in having misalignment following surgery. I’m hoping we hear from others that had same thing happen.

Hi Ellen,
Have your MRIs or Ultrasound shown any damage to knee cartlidge or tendons? My knee issues also continue 4 months post THR and I’m due a steriod injection soon and an ultrasound.

Hi Michelle… What are your knee issues…displaced kneecap like mine? After showing me my x-ray of displaced kneecap dr. suggested steroid injection like you. What I should have asked is in place of aligning my kneecap to where it belongs? Actually I can walk almost nornally with very little pain…but I still want my kneecap where it belongs!

I took the injections about 7 weeks ago it did nothing, but cause excruciating pain during the injections into my knee, was bruised for 7 weeks. Starting PT again at Kaiser on the 24th.

Hi Joy,
My knee was swollen and painful immediately after surgery. It also looked like my knee cap was pointing inwards. After around 7 weeks it started crunching, then jamming, and now I have a ‘twang’ sometimes that goes from the knee to the arch of my foot and gives me pins and needles. surgeon is not interested, and says it’ll settle. After 16 weeks of escalating symptoms I disagree. I have no diagnosis as you do, so don’t know what the actual issue is. I asked for steriod injection as it’ll hopefully reduce the inflammation whatever is causing it. I’ve now been to my GP who is referring me for ultrasound. Surgeon xrayed my knee but just said there is fluid on it, no mention of displaced knee cap but I’m not sure he’d tell me if it was!

I kinda got my knee was no big deal…from my surgeon also…actually his assistant not him. I was at my follow-up appointnent for hip and I mentioned my knee wasn’t right. I asked for an x-ray. He told me displacement very common…should see physical therapy., and sent me on my way. I have since found out PT alone can’t make it pop back. I made another appointment with surgeon himself…altho I can walk ok (but knee does tend to “go out” at times) I want it fixed, not just PT.!! We shall see what happens.

Good luck with the ultrasound…hope they find something that can be fixed.
