I am really excited about stunbling across this forum in one of my general google searches.
I hope I use it properly, so please forgive me if I don't as have never used a forum before!
One of the many questions you don't think to ask your surgeon is 'what will I smell like down there?'
I am 2 weeks post surgery now. I still have some light blood loss, which is looking much more like the 'end of period' I was told it would resemble. It isn't what I would call 'fishy' but it does have a strong smell. Is this what happens when stitches start to decompose?

Hello helen you describe the normal post op odour very well. Your wound is healing and yes as your sutures start to dissolve you get the smell so don't worry it will get better. Are you able to have baths yet? Some Urogynaecologists say wait 6-8 weeks but depending on the type of sutures used you can sometimes have them earlier. Have you seen the useful information on the Genitourinary home page under Useful Resources? The South Tees information is very useful.
Maybe thus is what I smell, it's like medicine maybe, but I'm going in week 4 post op and haven't bled since I got home.

I'm not sure it's medicine that Helen can smell, it's very likely the normal odour from vaginal surgery.
Thank you for the reassurance Matron. I does make sense that the smell would be different as there are healing processes going on 'down there'! I am desperate for a bath. I have been showering, but the comfort of a bath would be so nice. No one has said I can't have one, so I guess if it's not too hot etc, that would be OK?

He it should be ok, make sure it's not too hot or too deep and don't put any bath smellies in just yet. You could clean your vulval area with something like Lactyacid which you can buy at pharmacies or any other vaginal wash. It just might make you smell a bit sweeter 😘😘
Thank you matron. I am off for a bath now ... 👍😘
I just called my dr about medicine smell said not normal going in for urine test tomorrow
I've been a nurse for over 40 years and never heard of a "medicine smell" before.
Ok maybe its not a medicine smell, its just a weird smell
No fishy smell, I just cant explain cause I've never smelled that before
If your urine test comes back negative ask your doctor or the practice nurse to take a vaginal swab.
Ok I will thank u, going in the morning
Hope you get on ok and get the reassurance you need x
Hi, helen: I had the same problem. I had my surgery in the USA three weeks ago. It turned out that I had a bladder infection and a yeast infection all at once. The odor was horrible...I have it all cleared up now, and I'm normal...really enjoying not having that awful prolapse....Just check with your doctor...Hope this helps, sweetie..
You poor thing Carole, that sounds miserable. I assume you had other symptoms at the time? I hope you are ok now.
