Post viral syndrome fatigue after flu/illness - please help

Hi I'm a 21 year old male who's currently a college student. I came down with a sore throat and a common cold which dissipated after a few days. The following day I went to the gym feeling if I was over my cold to do some light treadmill cardio; the moment I got on going maybe 2 mph I felt an exhausting painful fatigue. I went back home after 10 mins and layed down for 3 hours until I felt better. The next 2 days I rested and felt way better as time was passing. It was midterm exams week too. The night before I had one exam, I had to print a paper and pick up dinner from the local school cafe. The moment I left the house and started walking I felt god awful just painful to walk to the library. When I was waiting for my food, I almost passed out. I felt very very tired and it was almost unbearable. I went back home feeling like crap until I slept. The following day my symptoms doubled and it felt like a flu; entire body was aching and dead tired, wobbling when I walk, etc. l called a hotline nurse who advised me to rest in bed for 2 days then get checked. I also have been instructed to eat bland foods as I had no appetite that day. Around 3 PM that afternoon, I felt like dying; the fatigue was very very strong I honestly felt better if I was dead. I somehow calmed down and I called the school doctor who said it's some sort of recovery stage after a flu or illness. The following day I felt better but I was dead tired. I layed in bed all day and I didn't dare leave the house after what I experienced two nights ago. I was just getting more and more exhausted as the day went by. The next day I woke up from a good nights sleep and I felt very weak and dead tired. It was scaring me because I have pretty bad OCD anxiety. I called 9-11 since I was unsure if it was something more then I thought. The ER drew blood and then the doctor told me it was considered "post viral syndrome". He said there isn't a recovery time but the idea is to rest and drink water like I didn't know that. He advised me to walk to get my energy back but I still was worried about doing that. I was discharged after an hour and I felt almost death when I got home. I just did not know how to bare the crazy fatigue. I calmed myself by listening to a strong prayer and had tomato soup which helped. Today i still am tired and I am looking for that moment of energy. I need it back. I need to resume my life and career. I read that it could take a week but some forums say it took months. I do not have months. I cannot halt my education because of some stupid insane unbearable fatigue. Does ANYBODY have any profession opinion on the recovery of this? Any bright ideas? I've been managing my stress well and trying to eat more bland foods too with nutrients. My sleep also has been great; no interruptions. I am drinking lots of water since I get thirsty from this. I've never felt this in my life either. Please help. Any advice suffices.

Your story sounds EXACTLY!!! Like mine...reading almost sounded like i wrote it....I am going through the same thing over here....I’ve been to 2 doctors and er myself....and everything checked out ok except for abnormal liver function...but they said it was “viral syndrome” but I don’t know if it’s the same as post viral syndrome my guess it is...I got sick on 1/27/18 with the flu and had it till 1/29ish and started to feel better and then the onset of the achy legs fullness in the head appetite sucks lost 20lbs so I am barreling through it too...this would be day 9 after the flu and I’m here for you if you

I pray that it goes away. I have almost no energy in the day time but unusually I feel better in the evening. I don't know about you but when I leave the house, it's a kiss of death; instant fatigue and wobbling. I can't be hospitalized to my bed for much longer

I hear you...somehow someway we just have to be strong....and hope and pray it gets better...I’ve been taking acetaminophen and taking my anxiety medication and just trying to push through

I'm assuming anxiety makes the fatigue worse? Or weaker? I'm taking 0 medication. Even that I have OCD and anxiety I don't take anything. I've been eating 700 calories or less; 0 appetite. But starting today I'm amping it up. Got to get nutrients in the body. Hope more people reply and help us

I'm so sorry to hear this. It's definitely flu virus a you have. Please remember one thing and one thing only. This shall pass. It takes a good 9-14 days to feel 90 percent better. If you get any worse meaning bad cough trouble breathing then go to ER. What you need to do is drink fluids constantly. Also just sleep as much as you can. Try to stay away from close contact because you don't want a virus on top of what you have. I have a friend that is on day 9 and still has good hours and bad hours. Hang in there son. Take Tylenol if you have aches and the more fluid you drink the quicker you will get this germ out. Also wash ur pillows and bedding. Why did er not test you for flu? They could have given you tamiflu which shortens the days of being sick. All ur sypmtoms are the flu a that is going around. Hang in there this soon shall pass. Keep us posted on ur progress. You can private message me if you need to. I have many people that I am trying to help with same as you. Do not overdo urself. No gym for few days. Over exertion on ur frail condition not good. Blan foods like rice toast bananas and lots of Gatorade or water with lemon.

Hey there,

So my mother came to visit me. Today I still was dead tired. I had a bowl of rice and beans and that's it. When she came, we ordered food. While it was coming, I felt almost fainting. This is because my doctor clearly said I NEED food! And it came and I forced some chicken sandwich down. It must have been low blood sugar to feel that faint and extremely weak muscles. I drank half a Gatorade after and I felt like a new being. I walked to her car and to the hotel she booked. And I had 0 problems. My heart is still a little crazy from 2 hours ago. But no fainting feeling. However, I'm still tired but not dead. I needed food. I can eat normal meals now because I was on 500 calorie days. That will make you very weak. Also doctor told me to take it easy while recovering. Let me know what else I should do. I do not feel extremely sick at all

Wow that is great news!!! Glad you are better...500 calories diet will make yoyou weak and not want to do anything keep us posted

Hey there I'm about to sleep. My chest is still congested and I'm not taking how I feel for granted. Going to slowly eat more food and more supplements. I have barely ate since Monday and have had 0 nutrients in my stomach which resulted in that severe fainting weakness I had. But still going to keep it bland. Let me know how you are doing and hope the best.

You all need to remember that eating drinking sleeping is what our bodies need to fight virus. Also be careful with ur congestion. Bring it up and spit it out or blow nose constantly. If the mucas sits we all know that's how pneumonia sets. Sounds like we're all on the up and up. Did u have flu vaccine? If so when? It's less then 30 percent coverage and I found out it takes 4 weeks to get that 30 percent.

Hey again,

I have not received the flu shot since 2014 then again I haven't been sick since. Today I walked around freely but never pushed it. I had to disinfect my apartment and yes I am tired currently at 3 PM but not in bed all day. What a relief. My legs are extremely numb though don't know why. But I am starting to eat more too

Virus still running through you. Hang in there sounds like daily you are little better. Hopefully next few days all symptoms subside. I'm on the fence with the flu shot lately. thanks

Agreed. You are right. I still have a congested chest and still a pretty annoying cough. My energy is way better. I slept only 5 hours last night which makes me feel pretty damn bad but otherwise the significant change is I'm not bedridden.

I walked to class for the first time today. The moment I got I am dead tired. Well it was an accomplishment. And I have to go. Do you think I'm doing better? I have exams to take too. Just wish I didn't fear the normal activities as much

Walking to class is more then you have done in a while. Each day little by little you will see small improvement. Stay positive and keep with the fluids at all time to flush it quicker through ur body. See how you do in few more days. Drink eat and try good sleeping and stay positive

Hi again,

Yesterday I walked to the campus again for school but I did feel super tired the moment I sat down. I had to take two exams but I got them out the way. I been drinking Gatorade and definitely have been eating way more; 1500 calories around but it should be 2000. When I got home around 6, my eyes were drowsy and as always the body needed it's rest. Last night around 9-10 I was just dead tired which should be normal but I'm thinking I need to eat more. God forbid low blood sugar because  I did enough harm last week. This morning I woke up still symptoms; inflamed throat, cough, runny nose, etc. I hope for 100% soon

Maybe in few days make a follow up with Dr at ur school or urgent Care center. Just to make sure your lungs are clear. Keep doing what ur doing. The cough and runny nose lingers for weeks. I am still 16 days later and runny nose. My kids have bad coughing. Just make sure symptoms don't get worse if they do go directly to ER or to Dr. Hang in there

Yes absolutely. Couldn't agree more. But what I am monitoring is my energy levels. That is what is key. Everything else is just lingering and takes time like the ER doctor said. So no worries. My mind just wanders when I get these things

As soon as ur mind starts to go the wrong way redirect it by doing something else. Take ur mind off of it. My daughter has that and I tell her she controls her brain. As soon as you start to think anxiety go and do something to take ur mind to another place.

Hi again,

I did exactly what you said; I started to feel sick this morning again so I just left the apartment and walked to the school doctor to do a check in. She gave me a herb called eleuthero or Siberian ginseng. She said it's amazing for the body and health and it's also a cultural herb used around the world. I took one pill as I left her office and I felt great immediately after. However, it is very very strong and potent; 30 mins in and I realize that my entire body is having a reaction to its potency. Later on, I got back home and just rested til now. I am tired again but I did not feel that fatigue as I was walking around. Maybe it's ok to continue then. I did read on how many people it helped. The only thing I saw is it thins blood or lowers blood pressure but I'm keeping an eye open. This could be the thing. I just don't like how strong it is on my body
