Voroperative Ratschläge bitte

Hi folks! I'm new to posting on this site but read comments regularly, very helpful.

I'm booked for my pre-op appt tomorrow with left THR on Nov 3rd. I need to discuss anaethesia and feel I can't decide between spinal with sedation and GA - I'm a real wuss and couldn't cope with hammering noises! Any advice please?

Hi,

I had spinal with light sedation.Heard the noises but must have been asleep most of the time as I couldn't believe it when they had finished!

You can have heavy sedation and be asleep.Discuss it with your anaesthetist. You do recover quickly.Pain relief is added to the spinal so you are pain free for longer than the operation.Truly nothing to be afraid of

Best wishes

Janet

Hi Margaret.

I had my left hip.replacement op on 5th. October. I'm a heart patient too so opted for spinal anaesthetic with the sedation. Took my headphones down with me but slept through the whole thing after sedation was started.

I'm sure I came round quicker/better than some of the other lads who had GA.

Rob. ( best wishes with your decision )

That choice was up to my surgeon not me. I was put out and woke up feeling pain free, I'd rather not hear anything. Good Luck!

Hi Margaret. I just had RTHR last Wednesday. I had nerve block and sedation. I'm no doctor, but was pleased when I learned this was the route my doctor was going - I did a lot of reading and watched a lot of YouTube videos. I've had other surgeries with GA. I've done fine with GA, but I think it has more risks. Again, I'm no doctor, just my thoughts. This was my first time with a block and it worked great. I remember the numbness after the block, and then being positioned on the table - that's when I must have konked out. They must have given the sadation without telling me - I didn't get to count backwards all the way to 1 as is everyone's goal. :-). Next thing I remember I was being rolled into the recovery room and being pretty alert at that point. It's my understanding that GA is always at the ready should it be determined that the block isn't working. Take a deep breath and relax. Just focus on how good you're going to feel after the surgery and all that pain is gone!!!

Hay Margaret , I'm 10 days post op . I was worried about having a spinal too , but that's what I had and I'm very glad I did . You can have the spinal and be given full sedation and be fast asleep as if you were under an antithetic .compleatly asleep love . It's much better for the healing process and you will wake up with no pain at all as it takes along time to ware off x I'm a little crazy 😂 So stayed awake throughout the whole thing , heard my bone being sawn off and called out to ask if I could have a look at it 😂, the surgeon brought it round the curtain to show me 👍🏽. They kept asking me if I wanted sedation but I wasn't having any of it . I wanted to know they were up to 😂😂x

Haha. Nice one ! So 10 days in how are you doing ? Interested to hear how far you are getting on your walks ? I know we're all different but sometimes hard to know if you're doing too much or not enough. I'm 13 days post op. Very very stiff this morning but seems to be easing. I'm determined to keep moving , if only round the front room !

Rob...

hi margaret,  warm welcome to the hippies forum where we share our personal experiences and stories ...we come in all ages and stages on this roller-coaster ride of THR -My story is that I chose to have GA both times - Just the thought of a chance to hear, smell, or feel anything freaked me out so much that I didn't want that to add that to my stress level of pre-op jitters -I took a deep breath, opened my eyes and was done and dusted - I was given a sweet ice cold popsicle ... except for the drowsiness I had no other after effects ...ultimately it is up to you -- great comments and outcome re: spinal with sedation though ...please come back here and let us know how you are getting on ...big warm hug renee

Hi Margaret

I'm on day 7 of my right hip replacement and it you was a bit apprehensive of what anesthetic I would get. I'm pleased to say that the epidural and sedation I received was wonderful. The only sensation I felt was the numbness flowing over my body below as the epidural went in. I can't remember actual going to sleep and certainly never heard a thing. The anesthetist had already told me if I woke up I wouldn't see or here anything and would forget it if I did.

I had no after effects in no headaches that I had read could be one of them. I was a bit sick the next again day but I think that was was more from the morphine than anything else.

I hope all goes well for you x

Hay rob , well I'm walking to the loo , and while I'm there I hold on to the radiator and do some exercises , then I go back to bed and do more exercises in bed . I'm in bed about 80% of the time at the moment , I do go downstairs for dinner and sit on the sofa for a while after . Maybe another wee , some more exercises and then back to bed . 😀.

Good stuff..It's as they say isn't it. Do what your body tells you or allows you. We have to be patient. Our bodies have been through a brutal procedure. They mend remarkably but need time.

Best wishes, keep in touch. I have my clips out tomorrow. Feeling round the hip area there, it's as if I was a dummy for wrangler jeans.

Rob...

😂😂that gives me something to look forward to 😀. Yes it's a long process of healing time and I have read too many times of people pushing themselves too quickly , too far , doing too much and achieving nothing other than setting themselves backwards 😰, I'm not up for that , I haven't got time to keep going backwards . But it is extremely important to do the exercises . Little my little I'm able to do more but I won't push too far too quick 😉X

🤗 Umarmungen, LD

I had an epidural and general.  Never saw the surgeon and came around on the ward!  Suited me just fine!

Hi Margaret, I'm fairly new to the site and I have found everybody on here so nice and helpfull.  I am a complete 62 year old baby  and I am having my lthr on Nov. 17 and I chose a spinal with sedation using propofol.  My surgoen agreed with this route and thought it to be a good choice.  I will not have anything down my throat and I dont like how General anestesia has made me feel in the past.  Ive have had propofol for two short term procedures and I like how I felt when I woke up.  From what I am being told I can talk to my anesteseologist prior to my surgery and tell him or her that I dont want to be able to wake up during my surgery.  If I did wake up the anesteseologist is right there to put me  back under.  I feel good about my choice.  I hope this helps!  Keep in touch.

A massive thank you to everyone for some great advice today! I'm feeling well prepared to attend my pre-op tomorrow now, armed  with all that knowledge.

I'll post tomorrow to say how it went - thanks again folks, bring it on!

Spinal with sedation is generally thought to be safer than GA.  I had spinal without sedation - yes I know, not for everyone .  I was having a cup of tea immediately after the op.  You can't do that with GA.

You will find the anethetists are very approachable, and will discuss your requirements. I had a great time chatting and joking with mine through the operation !

Hi Margaret, I had spinal block with sedation. Told the surgeon I didn't want to hear it all, and he laughed and said I don't blame you! Didn't hear or feel a thing. Woke up when it was all over, lunch an hour later, out on day 2. Brilliant. All the best.

I had spinal did not hear or see anything was nice to wake up quick. Good luck

I am like you not looking forward to spinal with sedation. But have been reasured that you are knocked out enough not to know anything about it,The general anasthetic makes recovery longer,So like y.self aprehensive but will go with their expert opinion. So good luck lovey, keep in touch, ask all the questions you want at pre op app.
